What should I upgrade first
What’s your limit? You’ll have to upgrade your board and probably RAM along with the CPU. What about the rest of the system? Power supply?

Not much I just have a $200 gift card and figured I’d do a quick small upgrade. I have 4gigs of ddr2. Power supply I am unsure of. I don’t want to buy a new board or system. I figured i’d get a completely new system in a year and a half after I graduate college and get my first job. What I was hoping was this could just be a quick boost since I have to use the gift card.
Problem is that all the components need to work with each other and your pc is a bit outdated (no offence)
So with a new cpu you will often look at a new motherboard and ram and video card and a new powersupply

None taken. Yea I built it in 2008 and it wasn’t exactly top notch back then either. So would you say that It’s kind of an all or nothing thing at this point? If so Maybe ill invest that money in a nice screen or keyboard and mouse setup. Then use those for my new system in a year or so.
Yeah, with what would be needed you’d basically looking at a whole new pc
And even though putting one together yourself is cheaper then buying one from the store, it will be hard to stay within budget.

O.k. thanks for the feedback. I appreciate.
There just aren’t any CPUs that would be a real improvement for Socket AM2/AM2+. And upgrading the graphics card won’t help when you’re constantly limited by the CPU.
As said above, your at the poitn where any 1 upgrade would require other upgrades to work and/or would become heavily bottlenecked by the rest of the older system.
You got $200, i sugest u save another $600 and build a proper gaming rig for around $800. Some time in the June/July period Intel will be releasing their new CPU’s and hopefully Nvidia will be release their new GPU’s, that will likely be the best time to build ur new rig.
