Here are my tech specs:
MB: MSI B85-G43
CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-4670K CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
RAM: 16GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
Disk: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB

I play other games such as Dragon’s Dogma with no issues. Even though my specs can handle best appearance as auto-detect settings, the game will periodically black screen both my monitors. Sound still works, and I hear the chime of a windows notification but the display does not recover.

The weird thing is that I can play 2 copies of GW2 (using Sandboxie) on the same machine on best performance settings, no issues.

Originally, I thought it was a GPU issue: I had a 760 that had some artifacting, screen tears and the same black screening. I sent it in for an RMA and replaced with my current 970, and updated all drivers – but I still have the same issue.

Would appreciate any hint on what to check/diagnose!

This may or may not affect you.
I’ve recently heard of MSI Afterburner’s overlay causing some issues with black screens with GW2. Perhaps you use this or other overlay’s.
Good luck.

Some people have found that GW2 randomly going black was caused by their router/network blocking a port or possibly modifying a certain packet. You can try using the “-clientport 443” (or 80) command to see if running GW2 on port 443 changes anything. If that doesn’t help, if possible, try bypassing the router just to confirm if it’s actually a problem. If it is, try opening port 80, 443 and 6112, then disabling port scan and DoS protection, then the router’s firewall. What works varies by the router.

I disabled all overlays and it’s still happening

It’s not just GW2 going black, but my whole desktop.

now fixed! Not sure which one of these three things did it: rearrranged my RAM sticks, re-plugged the GPU power cable, clean install of Nvidia drivers without the HD audio driver
