Whole internet connection dropping
I’m tired of it,
since last patch I’m having far too frequent disconnects and since I mainly do WvW that means that if there’s a queue, everytime I DC I have to requeue and if there is no queue (rarely these days) I can play for 10-15mins (even less, sometimes I barely make it into LA or wherever my character is) before getting disconnected again…BUT as if this wasn’t annoying enough
the most annoying thing is that it is not a game crash, it is the game dropping my laptop’s internet connection, and that is unacceptable, your game at the moment is a kitten VIRUS, you can’t code yuor game in a way that it can disrupt one’s internet connection. (And it’s not the whole connection dropping, just the one on the computer running Gw2.exe, my other laptop and my smartphone are still online).
What happens is: in WvW I start seeing people going in a straight line, I can’t use any skill and soon I get the infamous “the game client lost connection to the server”. After 3-4 seconds my Team Speak client loses its connection too and I am stuck without internet until I kill Gw2.exe from task manager. Within 20 seconds since killing Gw2.exe process my connection starts working again.
I want to add that I am not experiencing any similar connection issue when I am not playing Gw2.
The bolded part is correct. They can’t, and obviously didn’t, code their game to kill your internet connection. The game is likely triggering an underlying hardware or computer network configuration problem. No matter what, you should file a support ticket so they help you.
I have this EXACT same issue, since the Halloween patch, I always my entire connection keeps randomly dropping, I have to reset the router to get it back QUICKLY, since I’m a PvP player this is incredibly frustrating.
Eternity~!
Technical Support
Hi fedecane – Are you encountering this issue on any other systems within your household or is this issue unique to your laptop? Also, have you tried using a direct connection by connecting directly to your modem via Ethernet cable? Also, when you get disconnected, what sort of error messages are you getting, if any?
Hello, first of all thank you for the feedback.
Now, I experienced this same issue also at home on my PC but far less frequently (once every few days of playing, so it was not an issue).
I played on this laptop (with very high specs) for the last 3 weeks and haven’t experienced this until 2 days ago. I didn’t try connecting directly with an ethernet cable at the moment, I will try (maybe) in the next days. After tinkering a little bit with the compatibility options I managed to play this evening with just 1 disconnection.
I have tried using Win XP SP3 compatibility settings and it seemed fine but then I had the black screen issue so I changed to Windows 7 compatibility settings and it seems to work better, no black screen and just 1 disconnect in the last 5-6 hours.
I am firstly getting the error message I attached, then after 30 seconds the error changes to this one: 58:11:5:512:101 .
.
One last note just for @Inspired: you surely can do that and even very easily if the application then is run with Administrator Privileges.
This problem has happened with a lot of people in various games, one suggestion I have is to check your modem’s signal link for upstream and downstream power. You wouldn’t happen to be using Charter Cable would you?

Both of you, do me a favor, check your modem’s upstream and downstream power please.

really weird, I actually just got this issue today. Nothing like this has happened before and no one was even home when it happened and I checked all my connections while it happened, I was the only one on. On top of that, I am on an Ethernet cable not wifi

I could not tell you that as we don’t know the actual cause. But I can tell you that this issue has been seen before on numerous games on other tech forums and some of the issues were fixed due to a poor signal link to the modem being identified.
I don’t want to give you false hope, I just want to eliminate any variables that we can.
When I ask for the signal power btw, I don’t mean your upstream or downstream speeds, but the actual signal’s power reception. (For example upstream could be -2 dbmv, and that shows a poor signal from your ISP that could be due to various things, from cracks in a trunk line, damaged amp, etc.)

Just an update, I have found a related thread:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Guild-wars-is-disconnecting-my-internet/first
..with people describing this exact same issue and proposing some kind of solutions, that worked for a limited amount of them so better than nothing
I am about to try at least a couple of them and will let you know.
Also, I have tried to play on ethernet and I haven’t experienced the issue in those 2hours.
It might have been sheer luck as I also had sessions of 4-5 hours without experiencing the issue while on Wi-Fi.
One post from Anet about this? That’s all? Do they only have 3 people working for them or something?
Seriously, Anet customer service/tech support sucks.
oh good, i am happy to know that i am not the only one with the same problem, these frequent disconnections started to happen 3 days ago and is happening even now, my disconnects every other 10 seconds, making the game unplayable, restarting cable doesn’t fix the problem I am pretty much at my wits end.

Tech Support forums are for community involvement. They may post now and again, but if you want to work with their technical support, open a support ticket.

Obviously I don’t see them posting at everyones’ whim, but it doesn’t stop them from attempting to help…. If you haven’t noticed, Ashley Segovia has been posting a bit on the Tech forum attempting to publicly help the players running into issues. At least she is trying in some way, shape, or form rather than not posting at all, so be happy they have someone monitoring the forums at least.
No matter the game, there will always be disgruntled players.

I opened a support ticket yesterday, and still haven’t even gotten so much as a whisper from Anet. So yeah, I’m disgruntled.
I have this issue as well, it usually happens at times of intense combat, most often in WvW and PVE big zergs.
Meanwhile, another person playing the game in the same apartment never has this problem due to being connected with a cable, apparently. OR something else.

Wireless routers can be a bit of an issue with game. Sometimes they work fine, other times they can act flaky when you have a lot of traffic.
If you can, trying playing plugged in with an Ethernet cable and see if you still have the issue.

Nah there’s no issue if you’re playing with cable connection..
Also, now I have a laptop with cable connection and I’m using it as a wi-fi hotspot to give wireless connection to my gaming laptop where I play Gw2. And I haven’t had any disconnect since.. (I don’t like this solution btw)
So in my opinion guild wars 2 is doing something that most wi-fi routers/APs can’t sustain, while cable or extremely geared routers (I have a whole laptop acting as a router atm) can.
Edit: Just got the same old 7: … :101 disconnect error with the wireless setup described above :/

The game can’t do anything to affect routers or access points. The data is generated and passed down the stack where the data is formatted. Honestly sounds like you need to update your drivers for the wireless card on your laptop.

You seriously think posting this helps you get better support sooner? I get the feeling you may have eaten a good bit of “added” ingredients in your food if you treat people like this in real life…. Might want to step back and evaluate the best manner to try and obtain better service in the future.
On topic, this is likely NOT an issue ANet should even be TRYING to solve….NOTHING in a game can disconnect your system from the internet. It is a router / wireless adapter / driver issue on YOUR end. Other players here will certainly be willing to assist in isolating and trying to solve the problem, but the fact that others are sure no issues exist with a cable connection indicates this is in no way a GW2 software issue (tho very high network traffic when in very crowded zones COULD cause the failure to trigger).

This is a common issue with WiFi and is why you should avoid online gaming with it if at all possible – unless you are literally in the same room as the router.
These days nearly everyone has a wireless router; including my neighbor who (evidently) has the super-powered router from…
Anyway, I don’t game on my laptop, but my connection speed varies all over the place due to interference from the neighbors’ router. I’m really lucky if I can get over 10 Mbps throughput on a 30 Mbps cable internet connection. Heck, I’m lucky if I can manage to connect to the router above 48 Mbps.

So I imagine that you say this because you are actually one of the developers that implemented it.
As for the second part it is equally useless as the first, as I have a Killer Wireless – N adapter with latest driver installed AND I was getting this same problem months ago @home, on a desktop PC, with cable connection, on a different router, very much rarely tho, at least.

“Nothing in a game can disconnect your system from the internet” I felt to requote this just to say: wow, how lucky, 2 ANet developers in a row! awesome!
Yet it appears that a lot of people lately are experiencing this issue.. but yeah I guess you’re right, ANet should definitely not care nor trying to solve an issue that they introduced in a very specific point in time.. it is totally a coordinated user issue, yeah.
I’m playing at 20cm to 2m distance from my wireless router, I have the latest Wi-Fi Drivers and there’s noone else connected to my wireless connection (and not in a crowded zone). Same issue, with ethernet cable, experienced very rarely @home months ago, with totally another setup. Next?

As previously said I’m playing from 20cm to 1m from my wireless AP.
And it’s not that I choose to play on wireless if it is what you are implying.
I (and many will be with me probably) don’t really give any kitten about your neighbour’s router so..
Well good luck then.
I’m off to play the game because I don’t have any issues with it.
Hey there,
I just wanted to let the forum know that this bug still exists, and has just finally manifest itself for me… For the first time in 4000 hours. New PC, has been running GW fine for weeks though. Today however, If I try to open gw2.exe, I get a ‘connection failed, retrying’ in red, and my net completely turns off for a few minutes. Dirty pool, anet.
notes: I am hard-wired to my router and this problem does not manifest in any other game or software in my library.

Same problem here. Big spike of lag, internet on my pc starts to lag (noticed because of TS3), game disconnects me and everything goes back to normal.
This happens in any game environment: wvw, pvp, pve, afk in LA.
Same here. Wired to modem. Lag, spike, dc, internet blinks off, lose connection to TS, internet comes back on, everything resumes as normal except GW2 won’t connect (connection errors detected). Has started happening regularly since Tuesday. Never lose my connection except when playing GW2.
If I let GW2 continue, it often reconnects after 10-30 minutes. All other aspects of the internet are working fine in the meanwhile.

It sounds like your capping out on your bandwidth from your modem, and it loses it. I would suggest calling your ISP (if the modem is from them) and see what troubleshooting they can do.
I was having that issue and it turned out my router wasn’t working. It would tap out and drop my connection. They sent me a new one as a replacement due to it.

My router works perfectly fine, all other games, browsers and websites work, but NOT gw2. I join, have 50-100ping, try to enter an instance and it rockets to 4-5k ping. So I know its not on my end, its on ArenaNet’s end.

Run PingPlotter (you can google it) and show it’s on Anet’s end. Anet’s connection can’t completely drop your connection. It sounds like you’re hitting a wall in your router and other things don’t hit it.
Any news ?
the game is not playable. DC during teq, DC in wvw, DC in pvp, DC in fractals.
and not a single word from devs.
