I am deaf and have no desire to use SMS now its seems its going to happen. This morning when i got up i was excited to be able to participate in HoT Beta. I login to GW2 and after i enter all my details ,it asks to use SMS or remind later. Why as a person with deafness should i be forced to buy a mobile phone that i cannot use ,and not forgetting the added expense.

Now i feel upset and puts me off from playing GW2 and its expansion if i have to fight this move. Knowing full well it will probably kick in the SMS option compulsory soon.

Why not a system like GW1 where you need to enter a name of a created character. It seems ANET is missing the point that some players have disabilities.

Should i have to walk away from playing GW2 because i cannot use or access a SMS device. It seems discrimination is at play here ,something which upsets me.

Game companies must comply with all ADA laws but are not even willing to try to do so.

I know three deaf people who have phones. They use them for chatting to people all the time, for being connected to the world any time they like, having fun with Snapchat, reading through Reddit, playing games. There are so many things they can do!

It really angers me that you would use a disability to try to claim you’re being discriminated against in this way. You’re not. You’re being a huge jerk.

Your eyes work, your fingers work. You have access to most of a modern phone’s features.

You’d have a valid point if GW2 tried to call a landline phone with a code to give you, but they’re not doing that.

It sucks you have no hearing, but that’s not a reason to not have a phone!

I thought SMS messages were text. Don’t most cell phones have a vibrate function?

Regardless, WinAuth is another viable choice, I believe. (No phone necessary – that’s what I use.)

I don’t think you really being forced to use the sms authentication it’s just an option for account security. So fare I have not seen anything on my account forcing me to use this. Anet knows that not everyone that plays the game has a cellphone so it’s not mandatory its optional, good luck

As far as I know, you’re not forced to use SMS authentication. I don’t have a mobile phone at all myself, so I don’t use it. I only have e-mail authentication myself.

And WinAuth and Google Authenticator still works. SMS has been added to two tier but it doesn’t replace the existing authenticator.

Most phone companies will offer a special reduced-rate plan to people who are Deaf and will only use texting features. Or so all of my ASL professors have told me.
