Q:
So, I am looking for comments/suggestions.
I have been noticing that my Desktop has been outperformed by my laptop when playing GW2 on the same settings. Looking at the specs, my desktop has my laptop beat by every measure (with a minor possible exception in CPU).
Desktop: Runs PvE ~40 (depending if reflections are present). Cities ~20.
Core i7 – 920 (OCed to 3.8-4.0)
RAM 8gb
HDD 7200RPM (about to upgrade to SSD)
Video Card: HD 6870 1gb
Laptop: Runs PvE at 60+ fps no problem. Cities 40-60.
Core i7 – Intel Core i7-2630QM (2.0GHz)
RAM – 4gb
HDD – 5400RPM
Video Card: HD6570M
Any ideas? I am going to reinstall Windows 7 on the desktop and start fresh with all the drivers to see if that helps.
Because of you’re CPU. GW2 is really CPU havy. Get a better CPU and u will get better results.
Weird, considering the HD6570m is a very low en card compared to the 6870 on ur desktop. What kind of graphics settings are u running on both systems?
Moosie u are very wrong, the i7 920 ocd to 3.8ghz is a very strong CPU, and certanly way faster than that laptop CPU, if u have no idea how a CPU compare to another please avoid posting on this forums, u will only confuse ppl.

Your video card could be installed in the wrong slot (it happens).
Your CPU is throttling itself because of over heating. (check the temp lately?)
clock for clock the 2630QM is better than the 920 on single thread performance beleve it or not. However with ur OC the desktop one should be faster. Btw the 2630WM Turbo clocks to 2.9ghz
Check ur GPU usuage when ur playing the game. Also check ur CPU and GPU temperatures.

The graphics settings in both games are identical for testing purposes. I will check the temperatures and the GPU slot (which might quite possibly be in the wrong slot since I dusted it out a few months ago).
1. Clock for clock sandy is ~15% better than gulftown.
2. That 2630QM will only reach 2.9GHz with a single active thread (aka not in GW2), which still wouldn’t be enough to beat that 920.
Your problem is your RAM. LGA1366 is a triple channel design, not dual channel, so there’s no way you can run 8GB without taking a huge hit to memory performance. Either risk mixing brands and fill it to a 2×6 or 4×3 config (making sure they’re all in the same colour slot), or replace the whole set.
(based on my experiments, reflections and shadows need raw throughput not timings, so 2133/CL11 does better than 1600/CL9)

Hey delta did u properlly tested the memory performance in GW2??? does faster mem really help? i’m very intrested on what u said. I know is some games like skyrim and F1 memory speed and timing does boost performance quite a bit, but i didn’t knew about GW2
4×4 GSkill Sniper (stock 1866/CL9 1.5v), it seemed smoother. Unstable RAM is probably the quickest way to nuke something in your Windows install so I didn’t try to make anything comprehensive.
What I do know, though, is when one of the sticks wasn’t in all the way (showing 12GB), FPS tanked pretty hard.

I can kind of confirm this. I used to have a bad stick of RAM but it would only show its bad nature after a while of playing GW2 or using other applications that eat RAM. When I had this bad stick, everything seemed a little off and slower. I used to literally chug in LA when moving my camera around in a 360 degree arc when I first loaded in. This could also be because my CPU was running stock speed at the time as well. Then, after a while I would get a BSOD because my RAM failed me. I run sticks at 1600MHz CL9 Since I have replaced that stick and overclocked my CPU, the game runs much smoother than it did prior.
