I have a i3-540 and a 460 GTX. I have 64bit Windows, 8gb or ram and a SSD.

Performance is good… until it is not. I am concerned that if I drop 200 bucks on my machine I will not see an improvement. Can anyone give me some guidance regarding how to get more performance out of GW2?

if you’re already using DDR3 memory, your best bet is going all the way using E3-1230v2 with decent board that can accept it. as you’re halfway already to utopia.

If you upgrade you should get either a I5-2500K or an I5-3570K, yes the K is very important as it means you can overclock them an almost always get at least 4.00 Ghz from them, commonly they end up being 4.50 Ghz or more if you have the right cooling.

I can not say for sure how much extra performance you would be beyond what you have now, but those two chips would set you up for probably 2 years until you need to even thin about upgrading your CPU again. It is also you next step because if you try upgrading your 460 GTX your I3-540 would severely be bottle necked if your not already limited a little by your I3.

Those two chips are pretty much the best you can get at the moment without selling your body parts for cash.

So, it sounds like the game plays about as good as it is going to?

yeah looks like Anet/ati/nvidia need to give us some updates to resolve thing, too many people with highend PC’s are having issue with performace for, IMO, it to be the fault of the user. Anet are aware of the issue and are working on it, however it maynot be the GW2 client and could be conflicts with other drivers etc so we have to wait on Anet, I would strongly advise against upgrading at this point unless you need more power for other things as your system is sound at the moment.
The game is still new and these performace issues/conflicts are hard to nail down but you should see improvements over time as the bug/conflicts get spotted and resolved.

See what other people are using, but a Core i5 2500k upgrade would be a sizable boost for you.

I agree to what most have said here .. however.

First before you buy anything. Check your CPU and GPU usuage whilst playing GW2.

If your GPU gets anwhere from 95-99% usuage, then yes a new GPU will help.

If it does NOT, then a new CPU would help more.

Which CPU?

Well a I5 2550k (not 2500k) would be a good choice, specialy for OC’ing.
If your not going to push OC much then a 3570k is a good choice.

They are both almost identical ..same stock speeds. .same cores and threads. However the 2550k Will be able to OC higher than the 3570K. Bassicaly if you plan to OC higher than 4.3ghz on Air cooling, get the 2550k. If you go water cooling, the 2550k is even better. It will go to 5ghz ..or very close. . the 3570k wont have a chance getting that high. If you aiming for 4.3ghz or lower.. get the 3570K it will run faster at those speeds than the 2550k at the same speed.(only very slightly ..but stil)

I have i5-2500K. I have horrible FPS (around 20) in areas with a lot of people, and even less in WvW. Overclocking it to 4.0GHz changes nothing. My graphics is HD 7950.
