it reminds me of some early f2p korean mmo’s at low settings…..lol

mind you, those games do benefit from lowering settings on horrible hardware….

gw2, i can max it out or set it min and get the same fps……and thats part of why this thread is still going….the game just dosnt scale for <what the kitten left in the litter box>

its sad…..and its why alot of us are upset…..i mean, we got great systems and cant get decent perf, imagine how bad it is for people at or just above min specs?

supersampling on without FPS loss? let’s trade our graphic’s card please. :P
i’m loosing 5-15FPS when turning it on. (area depandant)
and i don’t want to OC my geforce just to say “i’m playing with supersample at 60FPS”.

it’s just a feature to brag about unless you play on a really big screen.
on my 24" 1960×1080 screen, the difference between native and supersample is slightly noticeable and neither looks better or worse. except that my graphic’s card sounds like a racing car when turned on.

but now you’ve made me curious on how it may looks like on the TV in my living room…

the game runs flawless…during PvE but then you enter a large scaled DE or WvWvW and you’ll see a slideshow.

my complain is, such thing as massive battles, sieges, etc should never be in a game in the first place, if the technology isn’t ready, which obviously is not the case now.

You are wrong.

I used to play Wow on a single-core PC with 1 gig RAM and a Geforce 6800. I did 40 man raids. I got into many South Shore vs. Tarren Mill battles that often had 50+ players of each faction.

Yeah, MY framerate on THAT machine dropped to 30 FPS or so, but the game still ran smooth with no noticeable lag. I had friends with much more powerful PC’s that could maintain 60 FPS under ANY situation.

This game should be capable of the same — especially on the PC specs I’m seeing here.

As someone else posted earlier in the thread, I have noticed an drop in FPS drop since recent patches. Dragon/Boss events lag to a point where it’s only possible to use skill number 1 and even the bosses themselves act out of the ordinary where the normal attack pattern gets disrupted.

Same thing in WvW, I only ever avoided mass zerg fights or battles at SM where my FPS would drop to 10/15fps but that appears to be happening now when encountering enemy fights of just 10 to 15.

Anet REALLY needs to respond to this and tell us exactly where they are at because at this point it is seriously ruining the enjoyment of the game.

Please do differentiate that while having low fps, the reason you are locked to your #1 skill is probably due to skill lag and that problem is server side.

I’m still thinking people are slightly exaggerating, I mean on my computer, I get 50-60 FPS at near-highest settings (Shadows at Med, Reflections off) during majority of PvE situations. Heavy combat areas take me to around 20-30 FPS (maybe brief periods lower than that, but as I said, “brief”). Lowering graphics settings to best performance doesn’t take me past 60 FPS (engine limit?), but I do get a higher average FPS for sure.

This isn’t surprising to me at all really since my processor isn’t that great, and I know so. My system is heavily tweaked however for best (or close to it anyway) performance. I really don’t know what people consider horrible FPS, but imo, unless your running at 30 FPS or lower 100% of the time, you probably have no right to use the term “horrible”, “terrible”, or any other variant of such (do look back at the “imo” part). Also note the low FPS numbers I get, I don’t even notice most of the time “unless” I have a FPS counter up for whatever reason. I play the game to play, not stare at GPU statistics or try to calculate FPS most of the time :p

With this in mind, I really don’t see how others wouldn’t be able to get better (maybe even way better) results than me. However, to be fair, I have no access to a “high end” computer, so I can’t verify for myself, but if I had to take a wild guess currently, a lot of people are just suffering because of an un-optimized computer environment (outdated drivers and OS, antivirus taking 90% of processor on idle, GPU only running at 1x speeds, running a 32-bit OS with 32GB of RAM, using some automatic tweak program, expecting to run Best Appearance on a 1.8GHz single-core processor, forcing GPU control panel settings, etc.).

Now, I’m not saying that’s everyone’s case or that GW2 is guilt-free, but I really do think a lot of people should probably do stuff on their end first before just assuming it’s the games fault.

As for some random tips:
- Supersampling > FXAA
- Higher CPU core clocks > more cores
- Shadows and Reflections affect FPS the most

Unfortunately Espionage.3685 we do have access to high end hardware. The entire GW2 community
This issue isn’t allocated to individuals with low end specs. It is across the board. Even uber high end systems are bogged down with GW2.
Anet has had 6 months since launch to address the myriad of performance issues but it seems that they have chosen to ignore it.
0 comments from any Anet employee on their own forum basically proves that they don’t care.
We can sit and moan about how bad it is but it doesn’t matter. They just don’t seem to care about it at all.

as I have said before, min specs should be able to expect a min of 30fps on low settings game wide, high specs should be able to get at least 60fps game wide……

this game dosnt even let high spec people get a constant 60fps in LA or DE’s let aone WvWvW thats a HUGE selling point of this game…..

makes me sad…..I love gw2 gameplay, and the world is amazingly fun, but…..the game just runs so poorly compared to other games, i have trouble brining myself to play it over games like tera where I dont even dip to 30fps in swarms of people……

i did some testing in rift free to play and even in rift events with tons of people running around on screen, i never had my fps drop below 57……(i hear early on it was very bad about that during any kind of events)

I been reading up on TESOL and they are testing events with no less then 200 people on screen at once to ensure the perf will be acceptable……"

they are not using gamebryo based engine either

Don’t know what Arena Net did with last update, but game is working much better now. The FPS drop that I used to have on certain areas (where nothing was happening on the screen just taking two steps back and forward) , now it’s gone.
Plus, now my shaders are on High (where by now were on medium) and it’s just working fine.

Keep it up Arena net, really excited about this

Believe me, I do agree that this game doesn’t offer that much quality for eyes to compensate for the huge system requirements it needs to be played at all of it’s glory. Not even close. I am not saying that you are wrong, or that this post doesn’t make sense – it’s the opposite.

All I am saying (trying to be honest when I see improved stuff even by a small margin) that I see some improvements since last patch, at least for my hardware that I’m using every time when playing this game, and some areas where I saw really bad optimization issues (not talking here about massive dragon fights with 100’s of people on the screen) but areas where nothing is happening and FPS suddenly drops.

Perhaps they didn’t changed anything, I forgot to mention that I unchecked Depth Blur option, perhaps that was the reason for lower FPS – but, it is an improvement. Still though, I would like to see improvements with optimization, since game is beautiful and all medium settings with 40+ fps-s constantly for a lot of players would be really nice…

yes iruwen i know about the subsampling, alot of people here think the in game supersampling is a form of AA, when its just higher res textures, and sub sampling is lower res(game looks very retro in subsample mode…LOL)

It’s not about texture resolution but sampling resolution. It can be seen as some kind of AA, although it’s very inefficient. Here’s two shots of supersampling combined with external downsampling (2880×1800 to 1920×1080), notice the grass and the trees in the background:

If your pc can’t run the game with max settings, then don’t blame anet for that…
Just put the game in low and you would be fine and stop kittening about all this.
You are the ones who try to play the game higher than expected. They used the same engine as guild-wars… how do you expect all that to go well ?
It would be the same if WoW was made with the same engine as the first world of warcaft ever made.
Yes it sucks for all of us, but for now nobody can do anything to fix the problem. I guess the developers also know that now. It’s just pathetic that you don’t play the game because you can’t run it like you expected. With my config i can run it pretty well in pve, or in WvW. I don’t have a really overpowered pc like some of you guys pretend to have. But do you hear me winning about it ? Just play the game and stop acting like children…

I am on lowest settings subsample getting 15-20fps just standing still in lion’s arch. Drops down to 3fps when I do a dragon or meta event. A lot of us are not whining for no reason. We want to play the game… we can’t and our computers are decent enough to play it according to system requirements. We feel robbed don’t you understand? Those of us with systems far higher than the system requirements feel robbed as well. They spent all that money setting up a nice rig and can’t even utilize half the power for this game.

Main problem is that there’s no setting, or a combination of settings, you can turn down to significantly reduce the CPU load so the game stays above 30FPS all the time. Which is the absolutely minimum for such a game to be playable at all. The heavy stuttering even makes it worse. But since WvW zergs are just a brainless AoE massacre it probably evens it out…

im starting to think every player with these issues needs to record he game with fraps or the like, and post videos showing how poor it runs and scales, as well as possibly posting some kind of logs showing cpu and gpu load during events and general play…..

but i doubt it would do any good, anet just dont seem to c are at all…….i guess they want us all to move over to another titles like ESO when it comes out.

TF:There is a great deal of confusion within the community regarding the “200 players on-screen simultaneously”
reference from E3 of last year. Many people have interpreted this as some sort of rigid cap on either campaign size or rendering capability, my interpretation was that it was more of an internal benchmark for engine performance. Could you clear this up for us, and demystify the issue a bit?

DD:You’re reading it correctly: it is just our benchmark/target for “runs at full FPS.” We test every build with around 200 players
having a massive fight to make sure that even in the thick of it, the frame-rate stays smooth and the experience is great.

There can and will be much larger battles than that, and the client will keep drawing, but our benchmark for running at optimal FPS is 200 characters on-screen at the same time. So while there is a cap on campaign size, it is beyond that “200 players on-screen simultaneously” number that has been referenced.

wish anet had done this……

i duno, for me tera runs better(rarely have i seen it spike below 40fps), and looks……IMHO it looks good, its got LOD issues you can fix with config file edits to a point, if you havent, try googling a bit and find the edits for the config file, you can set number of cores and enable/disable some features to make the game look and run better.

also adding a shortcut/hotkey for 100fov is nice.

another point is, tera’s perf issues arent so much ue3 related as related to bluehole(orignal korean developers) using an OLD flawed, cracked copy of the flash development tools used to create the UI, they cant be bothered to buy the tools legally and fix it either…..they have only made millions in profit after all…..

Tera was originally under development as Linage 3, if you think of it that way, you can see where some of the races models/designs came from(anybody whos played both will know what i mean)

I personally think tera is the better game at this point, not due to gfx, not due to quest system(gw2’s is better then the old skool quest system in tera), but because it runs more consistantly, and scales with hardware better….you can turn it down and have it run better on systems with poor video for example……gw2 dosnt scale for what the kitten left in the litterbox.

honestly, ESO is drawing my attention more and more……if you read the link i posted, I think you will agree, also kingdom underfire 2 is looking pretty epic, and they have demo’d it on old core2 duo’s with ancient 7000 series nvidia videocards and it was playable and, shockingly still looked decent!!!!

Jazhara Knightmage.4389, that’s what happens when programmers code for performance from the beginning. It clearly wasn’t the case with this game. But ESO seems to be doing it right.

If ESO delivers at least 50% of what they promised, I will switch in heartbeat as well.
This is so far my favorite quote from the article:

We test every build with around 200 players having a massive fight to make sure that even in the thick of it, the frame-rate stays smooth and the experience is great.

Now that’s what I’m talking about. That shows they have great technical leadership, expertise and talent and that they have great common sense.

ESO really is the next mmo Im really looking forward to….
http://tamrielfoundry.com/2013/03/interview-dan-dunham/

read that, and then ask yourself why anet cant get 200people on screen and have a playable situation…….

Jazhara Knightmage.4389, that’s what happens when programmers code for performance from the beginning. It clearly wasn’t the case with this game. But ESO seems to be doing it right.

It’s pretty ridiculous that you say ANet hadn’t considered performance when building this game. Obviously it went through the same types of discussions that every one of the other 100 graphical, third person MMOs has gone through. You would have to be a fool to think that ESO and {insert developer} will have no issues with their game because they used 200 players in beta tests. It shows no technical leadership, expertise or talent and is only expanding on the same ideas that started with Gemstone, Meridian 59, Ultima Online, Everquest, WoW, GW2, and so on.

is it ?
They might have considered performance but at at a point in development when it was too late to do much about it, without rewriting much of the code base from scratch. Hence, why we get the terrible performance issues we have, with no acknowledgement from them(since they can’t do anything about it) and no hope for improvement.

Obviously it went through the same types of discussions that every one of the other 100 graphical, third person MMOs has gone through.

Did it ? Maybe, but I bet performance wasn’t there on the design table much, other than the limits to polygon count for the artists and the “target hardware” they were aiming for.
Apparently, they made a severe blunder with their technical implementation, as shown by their stated minimum hardware requirements. When top of the line hardware can’t keep playable performance on the lowest graphical settings, how can the much older hardware they claim should be able to run the game.

It clearly shows that what they “Intended” and the ending results were completely opposite things.

You would have to be a fool to think that ESO and {insert developer} will have no issues with their game because they used 200 players in beta tests.

I’m not claiming they will have no issues. I’m assuring you, if they set as one of their goals to have good performance while having up to 200 players on the screen, thats how it will be. Why ? because they are explicitly looking for that level of performance.

By the number of main threads in GW2 (three), you can tell they weren’t really thinking about performance, as a priority.

It shows no technical leadership, expertise or talent

To have video game developers think about CPU performance from the start of a project, shows expertise, leadership and talent to me. Today’s developers only care about performance when there’s an issue with it. They program first and foremost for readability, maintenance and re-usability of code, leaving performance to compiler optimizations. Performance programming is left only to kernel and drivers developers.

This reminds me of a quote from a book I was reading some time ago, called “Efficient C++: Performance Programming Techniques”, and I paraphrase:
“Contrary to C, you can not stumble on good performance on C++ by accident, you have to actively code for it, navigating through costly language abstractions like on a minefield "

Is this your first MMO? Welcome and please leave your tissues at the door

Assuming that bad performance is inherently equal to an MMO, because your experience with all MMOs has been the same, is understandable. However, let me repeat, this has been the case because those developers have not coded for performance or set it as one of their goals from the start.
In computer science every problem can be solved as long as there are three things, technical expertise, time and money.

(post dedicated to nvidia users)
have you ever considered that nvidia might be as much in charge as a-net?

“Version: 3.idontcare
GeForce ZOMG 6xx
- up to 20% more performance of a 3 year old game on your latest nvidia high end card so that you can play with 400FPS+”

their priority should be “not-so-well” running games…

…so the game stays above 30FPS all the time. Which is the absolutely minimum for such a game to be playable at all…

I disagree, but then again maybe I’m just used to both low and high FPS situations. I’ve owned computers in the past that were lucky to get 30 FPS in most games.

you clearly dont get it, anet didnt properly test this game with real user loads, they didnt put 200 real players on screen and test with a wide range of hardware to see how the game would run, from the way the game runs, i would bet you they had at most 4-6 people playing pve content togather, in DE’s maybe 15 people….

why do i say this, because had they tested with 200 or even 100 people, they would have known the game wasnt gonna run for kitten on modern let alone ancient c2d systems.

Anet built a game thats pretty clearly targeted at a console port that never happened, Look at the game client, its tri-threaded, the xbox 360 has a tri-core cpu, look at the gfx api used….dx9, the 360 has dx9 level hardware and uses what amounts to a console version of dx9…..

they said years ago the game would launch with dx10 and more recently they had said dx11 would be at launch then they canned that.

you know the reason behind that, i mean the only one that makes logical sense……somebody in management at ncsoft or anet or, more likley both saw $.$ at the vision of a console port of the game……

the idea was canned long before launch though because, they KNEW it wouldnt work, the 360 cpu would have to run 2-3x as fast as it does to manage gw2…..not to mention not having enough memory for gw2….

by the time it was clear a console port wasnt viable the mistakes had already been made, they couldnt go back and re-write the client engine to use more threads without delaying launch likely another year or more, and that wasnt gonna happen, infact, to me and many others, it seemed pretty clear the launch was pushed up to compete with MoP and that the developers likely expected a couple more months and likely, a period of 24/7 testing that never happened…this would explain all the mid-high and high level content that was non-functional/broken/kept breaking…..

I dont hate Anet, I dont hate ncsoft(unlike some people) I just think they kittened up and need to fix their kitten…..

where ESO differs from gw2 in development is that the guys behind it started the project building a game that was going to run a min of 200 players on screen at once and keep playable fps even on low end hardware, they also knew they needed to thread the game and make it scale with hardware, both video and cpu, anet clearly didnt do that….video settings do kitten all for most people, i see a 3fps dif from max to low settings…..

notice how Kingdom Under Fire 2 runs on a 7600gt and e8400….then watch some of the newer trailers that show it on high end hardware maxed out detail wise, gw2 cant scale like that…..even if your playing single player in a dead zone…..

I wish it could, gw2 was going to be my mmo for the next few years, but, it failed me and my group, when you cant get at least a stable 30fps on high end hardware for DE’s and WvWvW…whats the point?

my system should in no way be struggling with a dx9 game let alone one that is dx9 with low poly count(compared to other games I run, gw2 poly count is laughable….)

no way should a top end i7 be struggling at all…yet they do…..if you can keep above 30fps in WvWvW zergs in this game its an accomplishment……same with DE’s……

IMHO any system meeting min specs should get at least 30fps at min settings at a reasonable res(perhaps not native if thats 1080p but, 720p should be doable)

the fact that the game becomes a slide show on systems 100’s of times more powerful then the min specs….is a sign of very poor choices and testing by anet.

I think it mainly depends on the game and what kind of effects it uses.

For example, something like Quake, you’d probably have a hard time trying to win with 30 FPS.

Something like Saints Row The Third though still manages to be smooth at 15 FPS while driving, most likely because of the blur effect it’s using.

GW2 I would imaging being playable around 20 FPS at a minimum (unless your used to high-FPS scenarios), but one of these days I’ll give it a shot by limiting my own FPS. Most MMORPG’s I would say are pretty playable at around 20 FPS even, with the exception of shooter MMORPG’s of course.

I took part in a large-scale event earlier and I did notice my FPS drop drastically (didn’t have my FPS counter up, but I’d say somewhere in single-digits). Wasn’t “nearly” ideal at all, but I still managed to take part in combat and cast spells without too much problem.

I’m almost certain ANet will handle this performance issue at some point. I’m just curious with “how” they’re going to/could handle it.

my opinion is they will handle it around the time they start working on the xbox 720 port, and will handle it by rebuilding the client to use more threads more efficiently AND by using the gpu more.

but you wont see any fixes that dont have a reason other then simply making the game smoother for players….because they have our money already…so why worry about how happy we are with the game till expansion time….

I don’t see a huge surprised in a new pay to buy expansion. They did a decent job of bringing out the first expansion in GW1, I bought it and was happy though skipped the 2nd and 3rd expansions due to lack of interest and etc etc.

I just had a post moved, it may have been to this forum yet l am not looking through pages to find it at this time of night.
The game on my new Gigabyte ivy bridge board/i7 3.90ghz cpu/nvidia 560ti GTX/16G Ram was running perfectly till last patch.
The 560ti GTX is still a good card and prior to patch was tested with Furmark for hours unable to crash it, went from 60-150fps to 15-70fps.
In previous post issues reported were inability/delays in skill activation.
In FOTM today on Grawl champion l again had a few minutes of skills not activating. So it’s still happening. It was not before.

So I’ve also been experiencing drastic framerate drops…..
I’ll be playing for about 5-10 minutes or so around 80-90 fps, then the game will freeze for 5 seconds, then max out around 20 fps or so. GPU usage also spikes up to 100%

Here are my specs

Intel q9950 @ 3.8 ghz
MSI Radeon HD 7950 @ 1015 mhz
8gb ram

and this is only since the last update btw

Well, the thing is that the game was running fine with 50+ fps BEFORE the patch, is now running at 15 fps in WvW zergs. I don’t what they did, but it clearly cannot be like this. Why should the game be running like crap on a decent high end pc when it ran just fine before?

Hahaha ‘It was fine before’ no chance in hell it was, it’s been pathetic since beta, unless you live in a parallel universe and your version of GW2 is an improvement to this 1

For me it was fine, but I don’t need 400+ fps in a game, maybe that’s why. But now after the patch everything lags when more than 2 people cast spells at the same time.
