Long story short…the installation process for GW2 won’t start on Windows Vista for me.

Any ideas why?

And none of those “you need to upgrade” posts because I can’t afford it.

your video chipset is intel gma

Card name: Intel® G41 Express Chipset
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
Chip type: Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family

this is likely why, its a very poor video chipset, most likely the game cant run on it, your best bet would be to get a real videocard….

Jason your pc (if a desktop) should have a PCIe x16 slot for you to get a video card that supports the game.

just make sure since thats an OEM system to get one that dosnt need an extra power plug, stick to a 5650/5670/5750/5770/6650/6670/6750/6770/7650/7670/7770 thats got no extra power connector unless you can also replace your psu at the same time.(not sure models on nvidia side that arent total crap.
also, make sure whatever card you get has ddr5 not ddr2 or ddr3 to ensure it wont totally suck.

what’s this vista platform update? I have the same problem as the OP. It can’t be only because of the lack of a videocard, the installer just shuts down without further action. I tried running the installer as an admin I get the same result.

run windows update, update everything that shows up, as available, that should get you the platform updates.

lack of proper videocard WILL trigger this, they have said that before, there may be a switch to bypass that, not sure…..point is, without a videocard that can properly run the game, theres no point downloading it…..and they want to avoid people downloading it then crying it wont run…..I really wish they would put a system spec tool into the game that would show people why the game cant run on their system and would direct them to a list of suggested hardware(nvidia/amd/intel(cpu) )

it sucks but, gma/igp tends to be pretty bad….(im being kind here)

As you can see this is a very tight budget computer, I just revived it because it’s hard drive was bricked (seagate 7200). I unbricked it and wanted to use it to play GW2. it’s the only game I play and I don’t care about picture quality as long as it has above 20fps all the time. I do have a GPU but it’s installed in another machine, I just didn’t feel like removing it just for testing. I ’ll post back to tell if it fixes the issue.

never seen a notice that it wouldn’t even install without a videocard, but oh well… I put in the old 8500GT I have from another machine and the installer launched normally. I just found refurb cards for around $50 that should do the trick. GeForce GT220. until I can buy better hardware I’m going to give it a shot. If it’s too crappy then I’ll have to play on the wife’s office computer (core i5) when she’s not using it.

try geeks.com they got good deals on videocards, probably can get something better then a gt220 for your money(the 220 is icky, even my buddies 3870×2 is faster then the 220 i had(won it free at an event)

http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=VCD

got a few options that are decent enough for this game…..

they got a Diamond Radeon HD 5670 1GB DDR5 PCI Express (PCIe)
DVI/VGA Video Card w/HDMI & HDCP Support for $59.99 that destroys the 220….fora bit more they got a 6750 as well.

best deal they got is that asus 7770 tho….they are kitten nice little cards!!!

the platform update sometimes is listed under Optional components. No idea why. It happens fairly often that a completely up to date vista sp2 does not have the graphics platform package installed :|

You’ll probably still have some performance issues because of your Core2Duo processor, at least in larger fights and WvW, but you’re running a very low resolution monitor, so the 8500GT should be able to keep up with the processor on lower settings.

I wouldn’t spend a whole lot of money on a graphics card upgrade, since your processor is limiting the max fps you’ll be able to get, but a slightly faster graphics card might allow you to run higher settings without losing framerate. If it’s better fps you want then a GPU upgrade alone probably won’t cut it.

love it when people post without reading….

I don’t care about high FPS and image quality, as long as it’s playable. I currently play with a core i5-2320 with that 8500GT, and I bet the game could run better with the intel HD 2500 than that crap card. I get around 20fps when there’s a little action, and that’s on the lowest quality. we got this card for the sole purpose of running dual monitors, and that was like 4 years ago… If I could drop the 8500gt in this computer I would but it’s being used. AFAIK the GT220 is better than this right? and being in canada prices are much higher, and importing can be costly. it’s worth it for more expensive parts but below $50 you have to account shipping and duties. got this GT220 for $41CND with free shipping. it can’t be that bad. I was ready to drop a 7870 GHz ed. but I’d need another psu too, all these things add up and that’s why I settled for a temporary solution. I’ll build a new computer later this year, maybe wait and see what’s in the works for the next gen cpus and gpus.

doesn’t seem logical to me to drop $400 in a computer using a dual core 2.5GHz processor…
