Hi, I’m sorry if this is sort of a dumb question, but I’m a total tech dunce here.

I was interested in being able to play, but I did a system diagnostic at http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/intro.aspx for GW2, and apparently my two-year old Inspiron 1750 laptop meets and exceeds all of the Minimum Requirements except for one.

Minimum attributes of your Video Card
Required / You Have
Pixel Shader version 3.0 / 4.0
Vertex Shader version 3.0 / 4.0
Dedicated Video RAM 256 MB / 64 MB

Unfortunately it falls really short on Video RAM. Can the game still be run at lower settings or is this a completely lost cause? I apologize if it’s really obvious, but thanks so much for your time even if the answer is no.

I don’t think it will work out, sorry.

Unfortunately, if you only have 64MB/RAM, your laptop will not be able to run GW2. My wife’s Dell Vostro ran into this same issue. 256MB/RAM would be an absolute minimum and I honestly don’t see how you could really get by with less than 512MB/RAM.

Well, it isn’t the answer I hoped for, but I really appreciate both of you answering so fast. I had a bad feeling when it was that far below what was required, but I hoped it was new enough to stand a chance or that reducing the settings might compensate. Thanks any way!

The minimum requirements they specified are a lie right now anyways. I meet all of them and the game runs awfully.

Please refrain from blanket statements like this, because it’s wrong and just spreads angst.

I know people who just meet min requirement and the game runs at 30FPS for them just fine.

That’s not the problem.

^ /Agreed

I setup a friend who doesn’t even meet the minimum specs and got it to run fairly smooth after about 10 minutes of playing with the performance specs. It’s not the prettiest, but it works, lol.

I meet all the minimum specs, have tried countless fixes (the youtube fix, lowering my all of my options as low as they will go, messing with the nvidia control panel for hours, and even overclocked my CPU). Nothing has worked.

Windows 7 Professional
Nvidia GTX 260 OC’d
Core 2 Duo E6400
4GB RAM

Yes, it’s not a great computer, but with everything Off/Low, with the lowest possible resolution, less than 20FPS is unplayable. Terribly optimized game.

Sorry that you’re having trouble too, Schadow. I hope you are able to fix it since yours sounds better than mine, at least.

A friend proposed trying virtual RAM as a last resort; is there any possibility that might help or is it grasping at straws?

There isn’t a whole lot you can do, since your problem isn’t just the lack of dedicated memory on the graphics chip, it’s that the graphics chip is a really underpowered chip more tailored towards reading email and watching youtube videos.

If your laptop is the exact Inspiron 1750 that seems to be listed everywhere, then it should have a core2duo processor of around 2ghz and an Intel GMA 4500. In this case I would say the game will most likely run like a slideshow (5-10fps at most) even on minimum settings. The GMA 4500 is sufficiently old and weak as a chip that it would struggle really badly with a current game like GW2.

Even if you have the slightly newer version (which iirc is just called an Inspiron 17) with an i3/i5 series with an Intel HD graphics, you have the same problem to a slightly lesser degree, namely that the Intel HD graphics chip is underpowered and below minimum requirements in terms of graphical power. It would be less severe, but a lot depends on what resolution you run at (I would say 1024×768 max for this card) and what your expectations of performance are (I would say 5-15fps most likely and 20fps max).

Neither is really ideal, but I would say the core2duo + GMA 4500 is a real no-no, whereas the i3/i5 with intel HD graphics is a hesitant maybe. However if you want the game to run well (30fps or better), especially with something better than minimum settings, you really need a better system.
