For several days whenever I clicked “Play” after logging in, the screen would turn black, and no character select screen would display. Initially, the screen flickered black and I couldn’t alt/tab, etc. I could enter the game about 50% of the time. Otherwise, I had to hard restart. Occasionally I would get the blue screen crash restart.

This progressed to just becoming a black screen with a mouse cursor, but I could alt/tab. However, a lot of programs wouldn’t function properly. I could log in 0% of the time.

From other posts, I thought about BIOS updates, underclocking, forcing GW2 to only run 2 cores, etc. Everything worked fine before, only after updating my nvidia driver did everything start happening.

I tried the following and it seems to have fixed my problem:

1 – Open NVIDIA control panel
2 – Go to “Manage 3D Settings”
3 – Under “Global Settings” (not program settings), set “Anti-aliasing – Gamma correction” to OFF.
4 – Try playing.

Worked for me, was happy I could finally log back in after a couple days, hopefully it will help at least a few others.

I noticed after the update my NVIDIA control panel was also displaying improperly, this fixed that too.

Same thing just happened after the most recent update. I also have a Nvidia graphics card. I updated the drivers and played with the antialiasing in my Nvidia control panel. Looks like I’m gonna miss the event too, which pisses me off. It’s got to be something in the update.

it is something IN the update. I was playing all thru the halloween event and even before that.
patch came – then Black screen for me.
They just don’t get it.

Same here. only 1% of the time you can actually get passed the blackscreen. Then game lags anyways, so i tried to restart it, and it just went back to blackscreen. Haven’t got it to work in 2 days

Its been quite a common problem since post halloween patch, while i’ve never fully discovered the cause, someone suggested deleting local.dat from the game directory which stores all ur in game settings. It fixed the problem for me havent had black screen since, that was 2 weeks ago.

I have had this problem for months now and i have done the 4 steps but now that game keeps crashing into serious errors. Has anybody else had this with the 4 steps for NVIDIA graphics card that was posted at the top?

Same thing just happened, a few secs in character select, crashing, then black screen with mouse cursor visible and music playing, if you have a solution pls update the topic!

Hey man, this is exactly what is happening to me. I thought about doing what you suggested, but I decided against it because I thought it would be too far fetched lol.

I tried logging in about 30mins ago and just got the dreaded Black Screen… even worse, the only way to do anything was to CTRL ALT DEL and switch off cos the system just ground to a halt.

Upon loading Windows 7 Ultimate told me GW2 was bad news and proceeded to unistall it from my SSD.. so now I gotta go through hours of reloading…. :-(
