I’ve been having this same thing happen recently as well. Only happens during the talking cutscenes of the personal story. Never anywhere else in the game. Sometimes the cutscenes will run fine, sometimes I get booted to the character select screen. I agree that it is annoying when it happens in particularly long and tedious quests.

What an awful game…2 back to back disconnects at the end of the “Hearts and Minds” quest.
200 down / 20 up and my ping is solid. Time to shelve this game and this tedious expansion.
If you have already run a repair and tried port forwarding, and still have this issue. Try what fixed it for me… Go into your router settings. Turn off DHCP and switch from NAT to bridged mode. None of Anet’s tech support could fix this problem. and they even said that it is not in their system as a fix, but it worked for me.
I should note if you are using a newer model arris modem/router combo. disable the hardware firewall in it as well. Just to be sure.
It appears as if some of the newer model routers Nat settings and DHCP do not play well with gw2. I’d explain why but it would take a crap load of typing.
Needless to say since I made that change, I have played through all currently available story content, including LS2 and 3 solo on 2 characters without one disco.
Kind of silly having to remove so many nice features, to play a game, but the changes are easily reverted. I only change them when playing, although you could just leave them after making the changes.

I have the same problem and I play on Mac.
It seems that everything that is connected to Arenanet is slow. I’m playing GW2 for 2 weeks now and for a new player there is just no fun in playing a game that is constantly crashing over video part (story), when you do something for the first time (viewers, crafting, etc).
I have to replay some parts due to the crashes. When I first created my character I had to retry it 3 times before it actually worked (rushed through it). It rather seems that the game is disconnection itself if the player seems to be afk.
It would be nice if this could be fixed or if someone with a mac could tell me how I can fix this?

Happened again yesterday. During the long, boring slog that is Victory or Death. Hooray.
Tried it again today, and it just stops at the airship parts. Staring at the giants, nobody says or does anything. Nice. So annoying that this only happens during some sort of cutscene for the personal story and only randomly happens. I don’t think Anet even looks at this forum section. It’s shocking how few dev responses there are.

Hey, this is still happening, hooray! Only during personal story cutscenes. Why? Doesn’t ever disconnect in any other part of the game. It’s such fun to slog through unskippable dialogue and fight alongside slow, useless companions and then disconnect at the end of the instance.
Funny part is, something similar happened to me in a story quest while playing Elder Scrolls Online (it has only happened once there, as opposed to the many, many times in GW2), but in ESO, I logged back in and I was right back where I was in the story! I didn’t have to redo anything.

You can try a program like pingplotter to determine where your connection is dropped.
Good luck.
Only during personal story cutscenes. Why? Doesn’t ever disconnect in any other part of the game.
It’s either a problem with the game itself or the packets it’s sending just happens to match a trigger sequence. Some routers for example can’t handle certain packets and will drop the connection. Some ISPs for example will monitor your connection in an attempt to throttle high bandwidth traffic like torrents or Netflix and force you to drop packets.
Try using the -clientport option with either 80 or 443:
Gw2.exe -clientport 80
