After reviewing the information and ping path reports in this thread it appears that the majority of you are suffering from packet loss. If you are not familiar with this term, it is in reference to the loss of data while in transit from point A (your computer) to point B (our servers).
If you review the Ping Path results, you should see that multiple hops have packet loss throughout the test.
For example, “Hop #11 —- 50/ 50 =100% 46/ 50 = 92% 62.157.249.242“
According to the example, this particular “hop” is suffering about 92% packet loss. This is because 46 out of 50 packets sent were lost in transit.
When your connection has this kind of packet loss you will receive error 5. Not enough data is received within a certain period of time, and therefore, the game client will disconnect you because it thinks you are no longer active.
Because the loss of data is happening prior to reaching our game servers, you will need to contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance. It may also be helpful to provide them with your path pings that clearly show the packet loss.
Thanks for explaining what the problem is and for you work so far. In regards to the packed loss, I’ve tested my internet a couple of times for packet loss and had from very little to none.
Could this be a swisscom problem that is only related to GW2?
This problem is not fixed as it just happened to me, I am on a fiber connection and I have forwarded ports, I have contacted my ISP and they claim everything is OK from their side, after hassling for 40 mins I got some straight answers. So the problem clearly isn’t on my side of the pitch.
Had this problem for most of Monday – been away from then (will be back Sunday) and was hoping for some better news! Any concrete fix on this yet? Other threads in the forum have the same error code and problems and nothing to do with Swisscom unless Swisscom also provide in Israel.
SAme, im from israel, did the pinging thing and it works fine, gettin suddenly d/c and then cannot even get past loadin screen.. on any of my characters..
I would – in general – take ping, pathping and trace route results with a grain, nay, two of salt. Not getting replies to ping packets is normal, and in itself doesn’t mean there definitely is a problem, only that we can’t tell if there is a problem. Routers can be – and frequently are – configured to not reply to ICMP echo (read: ping) request at all, or assign a low priority in favour of actual data traffic.
If not for anything else but an alternative viewpoint, try a trace route with TCP instead:
- Install tracetcp (http://sourceforge.net/projects/tracetcp/files/)
- Install WinPcap (http://www.winpcap.org/install/default.htm)
- Open the tracetcp folder, click the right mouse button while holding down ctrl+shift, open a command prompt from the context menu
- run tracetcp 206.127.158.1 -n -p 5
You can also test port connectivity with target:port (e.g. 206.127.158.1:1337). Append ‘> file’ (e.g. tracetcp 206.127.158.1 -n -p 5 > tracetcp.txt) if you want to save the results into a file.
Here, consistenly high latency and high packet loss (say, > 5%) are things to look for.
This doesn’t make sense. People, don’t waste your time fighting with your ISP. They aren’t at fault. I am getting these errors now and again and I have ports properly forwarded and no other application is causing this kind of connectivity issue for me. This is clearly an ArenaNet issue as it currently only kicks me off when trying to load characters in specific regions of the game. Other regions will load. Looks to me like a server load issue, isolated to a specific cluster or whatever.
I am pretty sure ArenaNet are aware of it but can’t go around blurting all over the forums how some servers are overloaded. Make a new character outside the zone that won’t load for you right now. And if nothing will load for you right now, go read a book and try again later. It’ll get better. Guaranteed.
Update: It now has been several hours. I came back to the PC, started the game, tried to log onto my main and, voila, everything worked.
If this was really an ISP issue, a router issue or a software firewall issue, the problem would persist even now. But it doesn’t. Stop driving yourselves crazy over this. As the game ages it will improve.
I keep getting this error now with all characters sitting in Queensdale. Only happened after the patch that went up an hour or so ago. Very annoying, please fix. This is definitely not an ISP issue. I have 4 characters in other zones that I can access, just not the ones in Queensdale.
Code=5:11:3:157:101 error just now. my characters in black citadel if that helps. i’ve tried logging onto one other character and thats fine. please fix!

Out of curiosity, was this a character that you most recently played? I just took one of my characters and ran him into the Black Citadel and it was fine. The two characters who I am unable to access are two characters that I played right before the patch was introduced. Maybe there’s a connection there…
yep, i’d been playing for about an hour, tried to zone in from the plains of ashfield then it crashed. Whenever i try to log that character in now the ‘plains of ashfield’ screen pops up, then after a bit the ‘black citadel’ screen pops up then the error displays. i think it’s stuck between zones.
Well, not sure if they said they fixed error 5:11:3:157:101 on the US servers yet but my 2 accounts from 2 different computers still get the same error. I can reset my router, and get to play for another 10 min or so then I get the same error. 80% of the time I get dc from warping other 20% from just playing.
This just started for me when I tried to log in to Desolation at 16:00 UTC. This morning at about 04:00 UTC everything was still fine; nothing has changed on my side since then.
Sometimes I get to character selection and get the message when trying to access Lion’s Arch, sometimes I don’t even get past the launcher.
Out of the blue I get 5:11:3:157:101 and got kicked out of game. Now I can log in and choose a character but after that it gives me the error. Same applies to all my 8 characters. I’m playing from Finland so I doubt it could be related to Swisscom

Yeah exactly same problem, started couple hours ago. I’m finnish also. Though I can play for while until it crashes again, mostly when I’m changing locations or instances.
(Edit – Also 7:11:something did comeback today for few times. First time for couple weeks.)
Lvl 80 Warrior – Ranger – Thief – Elementalist – Mesmer – Guardian.
Switched Anet to Square E and haven’t regretted it even once.
Another Finn here with the same problem, only surfaced maybe an hour ago. Usually if it’s my uppity connection that disagrees with me, I know; this time, though, I’m fairly sure it’s on their end. Never had this problem before.
I just started getting the 5:11 boot, too; I can occasionally get back to game just to be kicked out again. I’m connecting from Finland, using Elisa ISP. According to my traces the culprit seems to be on the NCSoft’s networks, though:
10 —- 50/ 50 =100% 42/ 50 = 84% 206.127.157.94
There’s a 100% loss on my local Elisa gateway at hop 2, but I guess they just don’t respond to pings, as my connection is (otherwise) functioning well. Here’s to hoping that it’s nothing serious or long-lasting.
Edit: The game worked a-ok for the whole of yesterday, but the hop 10 packet losses were still there; meaning, I definitely barked up the wrong tree there. Sorry! Perhaps the cause was something local to Finland, after all, or the latest patch worked miracles. Thanks!
I get a lot of unpredictable lag and sometimes also get error 42 (firewall?).
I’ve been playing since launch and haven’t changed my anti-virus program. (Avast)
I use a small local ISP and trace route drops off after jumping 7 or so times.
I will note that I haven’t tried to play much after the recent maintenance update, so that may have actually even fixed it.
Dunno yet, sleep time for me.
Edit: I haven’t seen lag ever since the maintenance.
Weird! Very nice though!
I’m from Anvil Rock server, and this error stuck me… then I have an idea, enter as a guest in another server, and it worked fine! BUT, I dont want to change my server to play! And I dont want to pay for that if I have to move out! When my char is back to Anvil Rock, the problem continues.
I also tried to connect on another computer with another network, and the problem persists, so, its not a problem with my network!
Please help me!
Same issue…. Exceptionally bad packet loss, but it literally came from no where. ive been playing today with no issues. It literally came out of the blue and now i cant access any chars…. Pingtest posted… feedback please Anet…
Same. 3 1/2 hours ago I could get to character select, but not log into the game. Now I can’t even get to character select.
Pinging the server shows ZERO packet loss, so I think that pretty much shoots down the usual Anet explanation.
What I’m seeing from others’ reports above seems to show no significant packet loss problems either.
