Hi there,

I could use some advice, I think I need a new graphical card to solve my problem but I’m not really an expert so I would like to ask you guys.

When playing wvw and ending up zerg vs zerg my fps drops to somewhere between 5 and 10. Which is no longer really playable.

These are my system specifications:
8gb RAM
Intel Core i7 860
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
Windows 7 home premium 64bit

I tried to follow the tips given in this post but when I change my “Refresh Rate” to “60 Hz.” my screen moves a bit to the right which makes it impossible for me to see what’s on the far right on the screen and gives a black bar at the left, not sure why that goes wrong.

This computer is from january 2010, so not really a new one, should a new graphical card solve my problems? And if so, could you guys advice me which one I should take.

I also heard things about SSD vs HDD, I know I have HDD, but that only seems to lower loading times, or could it also increase fps?

Thanks in advance.

Your graphics card is more than outdated. When you bought your PC in 2010, that card was already outdated, since it was released in 2007/2008. And even after release, this was a pretty bad card.
So dude, I dont know how the game even runs on that card, but get a new one. Your fps will thank you.

It runs fine on the lowest possible settings outside wvw zergs. But a new card should do the job? What card should I take?

Any card about 150$ will max out the game, if u still get bad performance it’s on ur CPU, GW2 isn’t really graphics heavy. It is very CPU intensive tho. The low FPS during WvW means a CPU bottleneck, a new card won’t fix that sorry.

So now someone tells me it’s my videocard, someone else tells me it’s just GW2’s engine and another one tells me it might be my CPU. ^^

I do meet the minimum system requirements.

Have a look at his CPU and his graphics card. Now tell me, which one is the bottleneck…

You can’t put a 250$ CPU together with a 100$ GPU. Sorry guy And about the GW2 Engine: it works very inefficiently. Though it’s very CPU heavy, it doesn’t support more than 1 GPU, which is totally outdated. But htis dudes CPU is totally fine, even for modern standards.

An upgrade to an nVidia 560Ti or 660 Ti will be your best bet. In my use case with a 660Ti my game is CPU bound, but I have a socket 775 Q8400 (2.66Ghz quad core).

You have a better newer processor than I but a much older GPU. so you are correct. New GPU is your best upgrade path at this point.

The SSD upgrade will make general computing feel snappier, but in game terms you will only notice quicker loading times not necessarily any change in FpS

Ridiculous.5203 that gtx 260 is a little slow new egg $220 you can get gtx660 2gig ram if looking for NVidia cards look at cuda cores the more the better.

Upgrading the video card won’t help u in WvW sure u will get nice visuals in PVE but in WvW u will still get 10 FPS during battles. A 650ti or a 660 will max out the game easy, no shadows or reflections since those are calculated by the CPU, it is the best performance u can get out of ur old i7 in this game. Game uses only 1 core basically so ur CPU being poor in single thread performance will bottleneck no matter what video card u get. Even if u buy a 1000$ GTX titan u will get 10 FPS drops in WvW, so i recomend a videocard on the 150/200$ range.

sure you can, 250 cpu and 100gpu would work fine for this game….i mean other then the horrible DE/LA/WvWvW fps…..

gw2 engine works fine with SLI/CFX, the problem is the games cpu bound not gpu bound, so, it dosnt matter how powerful your vcards are, they wont be able to really stretch their legs with any cpu made today even with massive overclocks.

to the OP
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Will-the-fps-be-fixed

read that, the games a mess, anet arent likely to fix it till the xbox720 comes out ,then we will likely see dx11 and proper multi core support.

your gpu is the problem, if you want the best gpu bang for the buck the 7870xt (1536 shader model) is the best buy period, even nVidia fanboi’s I know admit as much after having researched it alot.

if you cant swing that, a cheap 7850 with decent fan should be fine…..

if you can oc that cpu, do it, it will help alot with gw2…..higher the clock the better.

thats the card to get, its like the 7870 and 7950 did the nasty and had a baby
