Hey guys, so im looking at laptops voor my school / study and i’d also like to be able to play gw2 at like medium/high graphics with atleast 30fps. So I found this pretty laptop, it’s very thing and low weight, it has a good price / value I think, something I’d call a bang for buck. Acer Aspire V5-573G-54218G50aii, nou my question is, can this thing run GW2 ? Or is the CPU the bottleneck, the weak point?

CPU is a huge bottleneck on that laptop. the u in that CPU number means ultra low power. You want something with OUT the u if you can find it.

Ideally you would want an i7 with a MQ at the end, or XM, as thats a true quad core CPU and also supports HT (8 threads). And that teamed with the 850M will let you play on medium to high settings (character limit settings medium to low still).

Yeah I know what the U stands for, but this laptop is still a steal it seems to me. And I heard 2 people say that they can play battlefield 4 on the laptop and also NFS: The Run on ultra…so that’s quite good ;o !

Neither of those games are CPU bound. GW2 is. So that dual core i5 is going to be the bottle neck for you.

Also, I dont know what resolution you are getting with the laptop. 1366×768 vs 1920×1080 is a HUGE difference in performance.

GW2’s min specs are GARBAGE. They do not account for every area of the game.

and they do not also account for laptop gaming either.

In a laptop, you want either 2 really fast cores, or 4 averagely clocked cores an i5 at 3.2ghz vs an i7 at 2.6ghz will be similar, but the i7 will always come ahead in WvW/Zerg Content

Mind you
i3/i5 = 2 cores
i7 – 2 or 4 cores(XM QM are 4 cores)

Contrary to some of what was said in this thread already, the laptop asked about in the first post will play Guild Wars 2. It won’t be fabulous, but it won’t be crap either.
A friend of mine played this game on a laptop with an i7 2720QM and a GT 525m and it ran auto detect (medium) settings fairly well, even if it only topped out at around 40 most of the time. Since the i5 in that laptop is a Haswell and it will turbo up to 2.7 GHz set in High Performance mode, you can expect some good playability in PVE content.

Turning off settings like Reflections and Shadows will prove a fairly nice boost, turning down character model limit may help frames as well and since it’s a laptop screen, leaving the render sampling on Native may help as well.
Turning down the resolution in the game from 1920×1080 will help a lot.

In my opinion, I’d wager that that laptop will achieve at least 30 fps in most areas excluding world versus world and world boss events and some other CPU heavy things like particle effects. If the laptop is also on a smoking hot sale right now, I don’t see why not buy it, if you’re wanting a laptop for a good price anyway.

Other notes,
If the i5 in it was maybe a 4200M the turbo would likely be up around 3.3 or 3.4 GHz I think. Not too far off from the 4210U at 2.7 GHz.

for the cost of that laptop (700-800 no rebates) I would expect better then medium settings and 40FPS.

and the MAIN thing that will hold the 850M back for GW2 is that dual core CPU.

And the fact its 1080p makes the above statement even more true.

800, i5-u, GTX850M, 1080p LCD….I would upgrade to an i7-QM or i7-XM, as that additional 150~ will go for MILES.

extra $150 will get you into the QM range. XM is looking at another $850. For a gaming laptop of such power I think that the 700 to 800 mark is quite worth it. If OP is not just playing guild wars 2 then I don’t see anything wrong with it if OP is not looking for the latest and greatest.

well, I’m going to say this much;

5 year old laptop – M6500, HD5870M, i7-920XM 1680×1050 runs Gw2 at 60FPS solid, up to 90FPS (1920×1200 – Runs at 45FPS up to 70FPS)

3 year old laptop – DV6T-6100, HD6770M, i7-2630QM, 1080p, Runs GW2 at 55FPS solid, up to 85FPS

Shadows Low, Reflections off, Character Limit medium, Character Quality High, Post Processing Low(or Off), High Res textures Disabled, the rest of the settings on High

The M6500 ran 4500USD back in 2009, the DV6t-6100 ran about 950 after rebates in 2010

So if the OP wanted to get the i7-QM, His laptop should survive for 3-5 years before he even NEEDs to look for an upgrade to it. Even more so since the LCD is 1080p (A lot more usable then a stupid 1366×768 LCD)

Thank you guys for the replies !!

The €800 acer has an IPS screen btw. And yes, it’s not just for gaming, the reason im buying this laptop is because of college, but I just want to be able to play GW2 sometimes when im away or got nothing to do at school.
And good thing for me that I almost never play wvw haha…

An asus with a i7-4700HQ with a Geforce GT 840m is an other option for me. The Asus is a bit thicker and heavier than the Acer, so that’s maybe a little downside.
But, which laptop would be better you guys think? For just general use, like word and youtube / internet and for some Guild Wars 2? They both cost €800

Thanks alot for the replies !

I forgot to say, if I buy 1 of these laptops, I Will put an 120gb SSD, Samsung Evo 840 inside, and GW2 will be on it.

You can drop down some of the options to find a laptop that better fits your bill. But with some of the rebates you can find that would apply to newegg (10% off to 20% off) you should be able to get the cost from newegg down to 850-900 for either of those notebooks.

And honestly, If i were to buy a new laptop right now. I would choose the Lenovo hands down.

the 840EVOs are nice, but I would never buy kitten that was miss advertised. They label it a MLC SSD, but its a 3bit MLC (meaning its really a TLC).

IT IS the fastest TLC SSD currently, but if you look for a decent 240GB 2bit MLC, and spend the additional 50~ on it. You will be much happier down the road.

About the lenovo y50, the only downside on that is the bad screen, ive seen it for my self and its really bad, i must sit perfectly infront of the screen in order to get nice colors. And I dont need ultra graphics, also, its €999 here in my country, and newegg is very new in my country ( The Netherlands ).

And I don’t know what TLC is / are, i jsut know the 840 Evo is quite nice, ill need mSata.

But do u guys think that i can run med/high graphics with an i7-4700HQ with gt 840m ?

I will say the 840M teamed with a quadcore i7 should pull medium to high settings on GW2.

Other games, I cant speak for.
