So I’ve noticed that in many places in GW2 the bottleneck becomes my CPU (i7 870)

GPU usage at 50-70% (HD7950) with 20-40fps and then in other places GPU usage at 100% with 60+fps

I was wondering if there’s anyone who’s more tech savvy than me that can shed some light on this, which overclock should I go for on my CPU?

Regards

In terms of playing GW2, 4.4Ghz. GW2 requires fast single thread performance. However, if you’re going for a general overclock, 4.0.

Side note: I think I’m in the same boat as you. I have an i7 930 with a GTX 560ti 448 edition, but I haven’t checked percentages recently.

4 core 4 threads is enough for GW2. A 2550k with a OC of 4.5ghz wil lplay G2 wvw with good fps. So if you have ot choose go with the 4.4ghz 4 core option.

Run Prime95 to fully stress it.
A 6hour test is the minimum u should do ..a 12 hour test is best. If nothing goes wrong ..no errors. .no BSOD’s and ofc no overheating ..then ur OC is stable.

A OC can seem stable but be causing erros that u dont notice which will degrade performance. . Prime95 stresses the cpu and looks for said errors.

Games don’t really take advantage of hyperthreading. Diminishing returns kick in around 3-4 cores and clock speed becomes more important after that.

@ SolarNova, got a failed test on prime95 after about an hour, so upped volts a tiny bit and lowered clockspeed, its at 4333mhz right now and was 3 hours stable on prime, gonna let it run overnight and see how it fairs

Errors instead of a BSOD usualy means ur on the edge of stability..uping the volts would probably have been all that was needed asuming your Cooling could handle the extra heat.

imo, back off the overclock and re-enable Hyperthreading

this game does benefit from it.
