iMac (late 2012) and the GT 650M
It should be a noticable step up. This site has a nice table to compare different mobile graphic chipsets, including the two in question here:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-650M.71887.0.html
Problem with a direct comparison is that the new model has a resolution of 1920×1080, so the new graphics card will actually have to work harder.
Thanks Naqaj
My current iMac also has the 1920×1080 resolution, but at that resolution the graphic settings have to be put quite low. So I intentionally lowered it to 1680×1050 to at least have some settings a little higher to have some eyecandy
The strange thing is, when I look at all those GPU comparisation sites, it seems like the new GT650M is actually slower than the Ati6770M that was used in the “old” iMac 2011 models.
On this site (see link) I checked the benchmark score for the Ati5670, the Ati5730 (which is actually the card used in the 2009 iMac since that one’s 5670 is a rebranded 5730), the GT650M and the GTX660M.
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php
- The Ati 5730 gets a score of 721
- The Ati 5670 gets a score of 1050
- The Ati 6770M gets a score of 1359 (which is actually a decent improvement)
- The GT650M gets a score of 1237 (which, even though it’s a newer iMac, is actually a lówer score)
- The GTX660M gets a score of 1639 (which is the GPU in the 27" iMac)
So even though both the Ati6770M and the GT650M are an improvement over my current GPU, it’s actually quite difficult to see what the benefit will be. I was assuming that the new Kepler GPU of nVidia’s GT650M would be a decent improvement, but since it gets a lower score than the +1 old iMac’s 6670M, I’m a little confused
That’s why I was wondering if there was anyone here who plays GW2 on one of the new iMacs (with the GT650M), or perhaps a MacBook Pro with that same GT650M
I wouldn’t rely on just one benchmark for a performance comparison. Different benchmarks can vary wildly according to what exactly they are measuring. Try to get comparison overview over a few different benchmarks and actual game tests.
