laptop temp :C
Update: GPU rises to 70C in very very light WvW activity
Maybe the other games you play don’t overcharge the gpu/cpu so much than gw2.
You can try to clean the inside a little so that most of the dust is gone.
clean the exhaust and repaste… laptops usually have cheap thermal compound. aftre these steps are done dont ever use your laptop on carpet/bed thats basically main source of dust blocking your exhaust. Besides 70C on gpu isnt much since they are probably being cooled by only one exhaust in other words they share the same heat dissipator. So as cpu temp goes up gpu goes up even though game doesnt stress gpu as much.
I have a laptop with a quad core i7 too (though 1 generation older, iirc it’s i7-740qm) and it always overheats. It doesn’t matter if I open it, clean everything, use an external laptop cooler and put all settings on low, it will go to 90C and higher anyway. I think there’s not much to do about it, unless you can open up the laptop so far that you can actually get to the CPU and cooling system and are willing to bother changing / upgrading it.
I use a laptop cooler, and it saves me 10-15°C… Ok it has just an i5, but i can run games for hours without having heat problems.
I run on a laptop also, MBP late 2011 specifically (purchased in dec of 2011), my GPU never goes above 82c, my CPU runs a bit hotter (i7 quard core), but nothing too extreme. I picked up a cooling pad to help with dissipating the under heat (which could heat a house in the winter), but I rarely have heat issues. I cleaned my fans and venting areas out just after launch and my system had more bunnies hiding in the corners than a farm and that helped significantly. The fans sound like a jet engine gearing up, but that’s it, no issues.
As for keeping it cool… Keep it clean, use a cooling pad to evacuate hot air trapped underneath, run at slightly lower graphics settings, and just watch your temps. (I run on medium settings without an issue, I lower a few settings for high impact WvW to help with fps dips during Zerg on Zerg gatherings)
Most cheaper laptops have heat issues when stressed. GW2 can stress a Laptop, specialy the CPU. So this is no suprise.
Best advice i can give is to make sure ur intake and exhast vents are totaly un impeeded. The heatsink fins are clean, the fan(s) are working and clean. And then you can try replacing the TIM thats currently being used, its likely crappy stock TIM.
If after al lthat fails then its just down to the laptop design, the CPU heatsink is likely not good enough to handle heavy loads, and the laptop casing likely wount allow a custom heatsink as they are usualy made to fit.
You may hear this alot but cheap laptops are not really made for gaming, even some expensive ones are badly designed. Depending on where u look for a good gaming experiance without issue a laptop will cost u *£*1200+ from a proper manfacturer with a properly vented performance design.

This rig at the time was $1200 :S I’d hate to have to upgrade again.
I had recently cleaned it out and have this neat cooling pad with two fans to adjust whereever they blow, but the temperature barely changes. It saves a few degrees but still gets so hot. It hasn’t crashed YET, but I’m afraid of the long term damage that could happen.
When I asked the guy where the cooling pads were, he mentioned little individual cooling pads for GPUs and stuff. Do “gaming laptops” come with them already? I’m so technologically illiterate… :C
Maybe get a new cooling system?

What you want is external to the laptop. The laptop rests on it. Most have at least one fan (I recommend two fans) and it gets power by plugging into a USB port on the laptop.
Something like this would work well:

I have a different one for my laptop, but it has two fans. Although my laptop is too old and slow for most games, my temperatures in normal use dropped by about 20 degrees C.
This is what I bought today, but it had an attachment for many fans so I’m using two.

But something’s changed, I’ve found out my problem isn’t temp related.
I’m at the point that wherever I log in now, I have a good 5min of play time before my laptop shuts off. The temps at that time were actually pretty low, so I’m glad this stand is working on keeping it cool.
Now I just need to find out why the game is shutting my unit down right away. And it just started doing it too
I have the Zalman ZM NC11. It has a great airflow
How old is the laptop and how regularly do u use it ?
It ‘might’ be that ur battry has run its course. That is, if ur runing the laptop form the battry.
If your running it form the mains and it isnt temp related then it may well be a driver issue.

Just bought this cooler the other day and all my heat problems are gone. Really recommended it!
