note: i was able to log in the morning when i gave it a try, but this problem seems to occur in the evening (China)

Maybe a bandwidth limitation set by the hotel. You may want to ask their IT department about playing video games over their connection.

I dont think this is the problem, because i’m still able to visit other sites. If there was a bandwidth it wouldnt be possible. But the weird thing was that this started to happen now 3 days ago.
I think i even noticed this problem code when i tried to connect without a connection

The fact that you are in a hotel, it works doing the morning and not in the evening(majority of people are back in their rooms and not out doing business or sight seeing); leads me to believe its a hotel connection issue. The game requires a bit more bandwidth than just browsing websites. Depending on how they have their network setup, it maybe limiting connections during peak hours.

Hi there Palm Tiger (and anyone else experiencing this issue):

The instructions below will change the way Guild Wars 2 connects on your network. In short, this will force all inbound and outbound data to use port 80. Since port 80 is a very common port, it usually has the least amount of issues with transmission of data. To do this:

1. Locate the file “GW2.exe” and right-click it, selecting “Create Shortcut.”
2. Rename this shortcut to “Guild Wars 2 Port Test.”
3. Right-click on this shortcut and select “Properties.”

4. Edit the “Target” line to include /clientport 80 at the end. Note: Please make sure /clientport 80 is outside of the quotes.
• Correctly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” /clientport 80
• Incorrectly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe /clientport 80”

5. Once completed, click “Ok” to save your changes.

If you get an error trying to save, your target line may not have the correct format. Please try Step 4 again.

6. Double click “Guild Wars 2 Port Test” and try connecting again.

Hope this helps!

I came home today and after a while i went to play with GW2, all was smooth until i got disconnected. The message said that connection was lost and it said to check my router setting and all the crap along. I thought it was the server that had crashed down. After 4 hours came on these forums to discover the truth. BTW, here at home , 3 different computers, 3 different accounts and all of them with the same problem. Everything is working fine, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, WoW, Rift, Lotro, FFxiv, Path of Exile, Steam, Origin, BUT GW2, that wont start…
If this happens in different countries it’s almost 100% sure the fault is on server side and your trick doesn’t work, at least not for me

Hi Donan – It sounds like it may be something specific to your network unless those three different computers are in completely different locations/networks. I’m afraid that I cannot agree that this is 100% a server side issue because if this was the case this would be affecting most, if not all players.

Are you playing on a campus, by chance?

I have had this issue not once, but twice. The first time, opening port 80 helped. Gonna try the same thing again, but I really have no idea what could be causing this. I am not in a university dorm and am the network administrator. My live-in BF is on the same network and has had no problems at all…In fact, he’s playing right now. He’s a computer engineer and I am computer savvy, and we haven’t found anything to be wrong with the computer itself.

I’m stumped.

Getting the same problem. I could log in just fine a few hours earlier. All other games and network operations work fine.

1. My computer hasn’t restarted and still has the same LAN ip. I also tried restarting the box just in case Windows was the problem.
2. Didn’t change any settings on my router.
3. I tried disabling Windows Firewall.
4. I tried the clientport suggestion.
5. This is a home network, not campus, hotel, etc.

Still nothing. Please help.

Tested using wifi tether connection of my mobile phone and it worked. It looks like a either home network issue or ISP issue. Sad thing I can’t play on my phone’s 3G network. I have limited data

Update:
Tried the clientport method. Result: another 42 error.
Renewed my WAN IP and Authenticate with email again. Result: same error.
No GW2 for me , sigh

Hmm very interesting, I also am living in the bay area using Sonic.net also and mine isn’t working either. I was in game around 8pm PST and was kicked off. Since then I couldn’t log back in and keep getting the same error.

Is it based off the starting IP of 173.?? or the network of Sonic.net is cut off from accessing GW2 in the bay area.

Okay. I think I got it. ‘dig cligate.101.NCPlatform.net’ on my machine yields 209.204.190.68. This isn’t the right IP. It’s the IP for dns-blocked.sonic.net. Apparently sonic.net thinks that this hostname is associated with a phishing scheme. You can put ‘cligate.101.NCPlatform.net’ in your web browser and you’ll get to a phishing warning site with a mousetrap on it.

The reason I could connect on OS X is because on my mac, I’m using Google’s public DNS server 8.8.8.8.

I’m going to call Sonic.net now to ask them to fix this. In the meantime you might want to do the following:

1. Fill out the form on cligate.101.NCPlatform.net (it will only appear for sonic.net users) or
2. Change your dns server to 8.8.8.8

Interesting. I’m using sonic.net, and I can’t connect, either. Earlier this week (Wed), sonic.net did have problems that they mentioned on the motd. However, when that happened, everyone had problems connecting to just about everywhere.

Tonight, I appear to only have problems connecting to anet’s login servers. Specifically, from gw2.exe -diag:

cligate.101.NCPlatform.net.
 209.204.190.68:6112 - connect failed

I don’t have problems with any other site, and so I don’t think this is a sonic.net problem. However, if I try to manually connect to that server, it’s as if that server is completely down, but lots of other people have no problems, and so that server must be up. Because of this, I’m wondering if we’re being hit by some overly-zealous anti-DDOS mechanism used by anet or their ISP. Basically, some sonic.net users might be unwitting bots used to DDOS anet; to defend against this, anet or their ISP might be blacklisting large swaths of sonic’s IP addresses, which effectively prevents the innocent (you and I) from playing GW2.

Edit: I’ve tried playing GW2 from both my windows PC and my macbook, and neither one will work.

Edit 2: I’ve also tried the /clientport trick, and that doesn’t work, either.

Vilkata, it’s possible for two computers on the same home network to use different DNS servers to translate the same name. If you can check your network setting, you’ll probably see that the two computers are using different servers.

Anyway, I changed my DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and was able to connect. Instructions for doing so on windows 7 are here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/change-tcp-ip-settings

das moran, the problem is that 209.204.190.68 isn’t the right ip address for cligate.101.NCPlatform.net. The correct ip address of cligate.101.NCPlatform.net should look like 64.25.40.x where x is some number.

209.204.190.68 is the ip address of a server sonic.net’s DNS server is sending people to if it thinks that a hostname is used for phishing. If you open ‘cligate.101.NCPlatform.net’ in your webbrowser on sonic.net right now, you’ll see a big warning.

The problem is that cligate.101.NCPlatform.net has been flagged as a malware site by sonic.net (probably eroneously :P). Until they fix it, your best workaround is not to use sonic.net’s DNS servers. I can confirm this worked for me.

OK, if you’re a sonic user and don’t want to use Google’s DNS, see the bottom of this page for sonic DNS servers that do not try to protect you from phishing, etc.:

Okay. I think I got it. ‘dig cligate.101.NCPlatform.net’ on my machine yields 209.204.190.68. This isn’t the right IP. It’s the IP for dns-blocked.sonic.net.

1. Fill out the form on cligate.101.NCPlatform.net (it will only appear for sonic.net users) or
2. Change your dns server to 8.8.8.8

Thank you Lagos. Change the DNS to 8.8.8.8 worked.

Just heard back from Sonic.net. Their ops have unblocked the server so this shouldn’t hit anyone else on Sonic.net.

Well I’m in Hong Kong and having this same error code at my home.

My internet is working fine with everything else, including other online games. I have tried the /clientport 80 trick and that didn’t work for me.

Strangely this happens randomly it seems, as after a while, sometimes a long while I can connect again until the problem acts up again. Pretty frustrating.

Allow me to add another voice to the chorus. I am in Finland, on a 2 GIGABIT pipe, and everything [BUT GW2] works just fine, thank you. Running Win7 with a pair of SLI NVidia 580’s, Win7 64 bit on an i7-2600K at 3.4Mhz. Oh, and I do NOT have any network problems other than GW2

I’ve got the same error too. Have been disconnected and can’t connect again since then. I bought the game yesterday and played without problems last night but today it happens. Got the error on the same computer with the same connection. The trick described from Ashley Segovia doesn’t work for me. I’ll be very thankful for some info and help.
