ryzen series
I would say yes, if you want to stick with AMD. Ryzen is still not the “best” for gaming but if you are also doing anything that 6 cores/12 threads will help, it’s seems like a good buy.

Nothing you buy is going to have good fps with character model limits up in world events. This game was built on old technology that can’t utilize the most out of new hardware.
However, any modern processor is going to be a major improvement over your current processor, especially in Gw2. If you don’t want intel for some reason, have you looked at the 1500/1600?

think 1600 will be better ? What if I set character model to medium settings
(edited by shadowes.8426)
It wouldn’t be better, but the extra cores/threads of the Ryzen 7 do not help in Gw2 as Gw2 really only uses 3 cores with a heavy emphasis on faster cores. Basically, you could save $100 and Gw2 wouldn’t be all that different.
But this stuff is quite new, so it’d be a good idea to wait and see how this all turns out.
You should be fine with medium character limits. Mostly everything else can be turned up to high, depending on your graphics card. (doesn’t require a strong one)
I mean the fps will still drop, but it should be playable and look good. But for reference, what is your fps in big world events, and what settings/resolution? And what do you get when you’re in a city like Lion’s Arch. I believe you definitely will be able to tell the difference.
BTW, as a warning, do you have Windows 10? Because Microsoft has blocked Ryzen (and also Kaby Lake) from receiving updates on Windows 7/8.

my graphics card is just a GTX 1060. my in game settings are on high with things like shadows and reflections low/off and i get around 30 fps during prime time. if i set character model and such to medium i get maybe an extra 5~10 fps. my cpu currently is AMD 6300. so kinda wanna see if i can make the leap from 6300 and bypass the 8300/8350 cpu’s and straight for ryzen. i did look at the 1600 and found it to be good. i do NOT have windows 10 and still on 7 currently.
Ah, have a 1060 too, and handles things easy. (though my resolution is a bit low 1680 × 1050). Have similar settings on an i5-6500 (similar league to ryzen 5, maybe worse) and using supersampling. 60 fps is generally the norm.
Probably not worth it to get a 83xx for this game at this point. Though I guess having to get Windows 10, a new motherboard, and new ram can be kind of a pain.
But keep an eye on it; it seems like AMD is working hard at optimizing the performance too. I really hope someone will record some more realistic gameplay with it while we wait. I just think it’s cool that we can get almost an i7 for a cheaper price. (no it doesn’t help in Gw2, but I imagine you’ll want to play other games.) And it can overclock, though I’ve been hearing they’re not that good at it.

I second most of what ArchonWing said, I have 1700X with GTX 1060 and by manually assigning the game to 3 cores it gives more fps than if I let it manage them by itself.
I would go for the 6 core CPU which in my opinion is the sweetspot between price/performance.
A word of warning: If you get either the 1500X or 1600X, they come without cooler so get ready to pay extra for a thirdy-party-compatible or official one.
No, the 1500X does come with a cooler, a non RGB Spire cooler (same with the 1600), it’s the 1600X doesn’t come with any..
RIP City of Heroes
That’s really confusing lol. What does the X even mean then?
I brought up the 1600 because it comes with a cooler. (Hey, that’s $20!) And it seems better than the crappy stock Intel one.
I don’t know then. It could get kinda pricey considering getting Windows 10 is needed.

i bought the 1600 ryzen last night, felt good saving the 100 bucks and getting a cooler with it. i’ll just have to set character model setting to medium and see where it goes as with shadows and reflections off/low set. im probably still gonna play on windows 7
The X is for E*X*tended Frequency Range which simply means if the conditions are right in terms of temperature, it will push the frequency past max boost, usually more than the non-X version. But if you are going to OC the snot of of either, it really doesn’t matter. It’s more for non-OC systems with upgraded cooling.

One of our fellow players uploaded their vids after testing Teq and Claw on a 1700 with an older R9 290. 15-20 FPS stable with no stuttering.
