3 types of crashes: out of memory, assertion failed, and messy crash

I’ve been getting 3 different types of crashes that happen at varying frequencies (may be able to play for 2 hours, maybe 15 mins) but they seem to fall into 3 categories:
out of memory: This crash is caught by the GW2 crash handler and is shown in the log file that is attached. This seems to happen most frequently when using a waypoint to a different map region, or switching from an overflow to the primary instance.
assertion failed: This is similar to the out of memory issue, but seems to happen more often when lots of aoe/other characters are in the area, such as in WvW situations. Though has happened in map switching, IIRC.
messy crashes: For lack of a better term, this crash is when the game freezes up (and constantly repeats the last sound before the crash and show a stuttering display that alternates between what seem to be the last two frames before it froze) and it is not caught by the GW2 crash handler (no popup comes asking that I send a report to ANet). I can however ctrl-alt-del and bring up the Task manager and close GW2 through it. It then appears to close cleanly, and I can go back to playing/do other tasks and seems to have no effect afterwards. This always occurs during gameplay (not map changes) usually in the middle of some action (doesn’t necessarily need to be in WvW, but seems to happen more often there). As a shot in the dark, its causing something that should be checked with an assertion (like the previous type of crash) but isn’t.
I’m running Windows 7 32-bit with NVidia GeForce 260 GTX card with the most recent (beta) drivers from August 27th. I’ve attached the log file and the game advisor output. I’ve been able to play other recent games with no significant problems (Mass Effect 3, Diablo 3, Skyrim) though I do admit that my card is now a few generations old, I believe it still meets the requirements published to run the game.

I think Anet made a statement on the out of memory issue a short while back.
The issue seems to be connected with 32bit systems, and running out of RAM, so my suggestion would be to upgrade to Windows 7 64bit, and possibly up your RAM to 6-8GB if the problem persists.

I would download memtest 86 and burn the iso to disk. boot off it and see if you get mem errors. The errors show up red on the screen. A full test can take 1/2 to and hr. Memtest is free to download and use Hope this helps

Oh ya if you get the errors test each strip of mem seperately to determine which one it is if not both. Replace the bad strip and hopefully thats the last time you see issues like that

Like others have stated this is a memory or lack there of issue with your Memory not you video card.
“Snippet”
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 3328MB RAM
That is your system your running windows 32bit edition this will not use 4gb of ram or more it will always be stuck at just over 3gig the only solution is to upgrade to 64bit edition.
Also 4gb of ram is a bit low for modern games while you should not be seeing memory issues like this in future and if you do I suggest you run memtest over night to check for bad sticks of ram damaged by shock or power failure/surge. However to be safe 8gig of ram is recommended even for your generation of hardware.
If you decide to keep 4gb installed don’t be surprised if you get the same issue when trying to run extreme high resolution texture packs in any game. In fact right now I would disable HD character textures in the game as you most certainly do not have enough memory to cover those and the game assets.

Turn character animation to low. It should fix the out of memory problem.
For people who have 64 bit, try disabling high res texture.
If you use auto settings (low, high and auto), low will have high res disabled, auto will depend on your system and high will activate high res. Some people have occured that it will activate the high res on 32 bit systems even though you can’t check/uncheck it. Maybe it has been fixed with the new updates since release, but check it anyway.

I am running Windows Vista 32-bit with the same video card and 6G RAM, I have been trolling other forums and there seems to be an issue with the video card. The problem could be low FPS or as bad as what we have. I have been crashing just as much as you. As for the comments to upgrade my system, that is something I want to do but it shouldn’t be something I have to do to play a game that says the reqs. are well below what I am running. I can’t offer you any other help other then a sympathetic player who is frustrated with the same issues.

I highly doubt that it is a physical memory issue. I haven’t used memtest yet, but I have not experienced crashes in any other games that I play or just in general use. And certainly if I do upgrade to 64-bit and plug in more memory, I’m sure that the out of memory crash will at least be less frequent if not go away entirely. But as I’m currently on a limited budget, I don’t want to upgrade if I it is known that this is a known bug that will be fixed by ANet/NVidia (hopefully sooner rather than later). It also seems suspicious to me that as I monitor memory usage during play sessions, the memory usage inches its way up as I play, which seems to me to indicate a memory leak and not something that I should need to upgrade on my end.

6GB of ram on a 32bit system does nothing the system will never see more than just over 3GB.

I have been having the same problems, and while I am getting 64-bit, it’s ridiculous that this is the solution. It needs to be fixed.

I just wanted to update this ticket. I’m still experiencing out-of-memory crashes through several different NVIDIA drivers. Attached is a recent gameadvisor output and log files.
I guess my most direct question would be: Is the amount of memory that GW2 is using when it gets the out-of-memory crashes expected? Particularly, it seems as if the memory usage increases as game time increases which would seem to indicate a memory leak, and not something specific to my system. While I have been enjoying GW2, these crashes make WvWvW almost unplayable (just about by the time I get back to where the fighting is going on, I’ll crash and get kicked out).

I have been crashing so many times lately that I decided to do another search on the forums and I ran into this post. Apparently this post is months old, but the problem is not fixed. I am not sure of the status of my pc, I do know i have a 32 bit system.
It seems that upgrading to 64 is an option, but this means paying. I am not willing to pay money to continue playing this game, because this should not happen. I bought the game, knowing that my pc was able to handle this (and the same problem applies to my laptop which is actually better than my pc) and now apparently…..gw does not support this.
So gw: fix this….
I crash when I change characters and trying to zone. I can do these things about 2 times and the 3th time I crash. And while I keep sending these logs to you guys….nothing happens to fix this.
I want to play without crashing!!!! =[
p.s. I have been running on the lowest graphics since gw came out so thats not the problem

try to disable physx on the nvidia cards. That stuff if it is enabled, it use a lot of cpu to boost the graphic rendering… That is something you don’t want when playing guildwars 2. I have a sapphire, and i can run the game with every setting at the max without problem.

Out-of-Memory errors are directly linked to 32bit Windows Operating Systems because windows 32 bit only allows the game to access 2GB of memory. If you have 4GB or more memory, the best option available is to upgrade to 64bit, if you cannot do that then you next option would be to try the “/3GB switch” (google it to know more).
4GB of ram is more than plenty for this game, anyone that says otherwise doesn’t understand why the out-of-memory errors relate.
Also upgrading your windows to 64bit does not cost, your windows activation code is 32/64bit you can simply take your windows 7 installation disc and choose 64bit and use the same activation code.

I’m still using Win7-32 bit with 4 gig of RAM, although I just ordered the components for a much better system. Since launch I experienced almost continuous out-of-memory crashes … about half of the time I used a portal and almost all of the time I found myself in a large event. Five crashes per hour was common. About two weeks ago I rather reluctantly did the /3g switch and literally have not had a single out-of-memory crash since in spite of increased playing time over the holidays. I did have one minor Windows memory dump crash while not playing the game, but other than that Windows has seemed stable enough.
In my opinion it is worth a try, and if you use the link that Nitro has previously posted (just click on his name to see his prior posts) there are simple instructions for both applying and removing the switch.

I just received the same error (out of memory) and am using windows 7 64 bit with 6GB of RAM. Only the game was open. Shouldn’t be seeing this. Also, the most common crash I keep having is the “messy” crash that OP stated. Happens about every 2 hours or so. Just had Dell replace my mobo as they thought it may be a gfx card issue since we troubleshot all software aspects that we could think of (it’s a laptop). Still having issues. :/
