The other day I was reading about FX chips running hot in this game. So I downloaded a temp monitor and sure thing my CPU was cooking like a egg. I had a case with bad airflow and guild wars was causing the CPU frequency and voltage to clock up and down like a yoyo!
So I took the PC in to the MOM and POP PC store and they swaped my parts into a HAF 932 case and installed a cool master CPU cooler. Now the CPU was nice and cool but guess what! The CPU frequency and voltage was still going up and down like a yoyo!
And I was only getting 15 lowest fps 30~45 average fps. So after pulling my hair out and searching the internet high and low. I set windows power management to “High Performance” then I went in the BIOS and manually set the CPU clock and voltage and I disabled all automatic volting , turbo mode and all power save features.
The results were nothing but outstanding! Running stock clock I was getting 30fps lowest fps and 45~60fps+ avg. Then I decided to overclock to the turbo mode clock speed and I almost fell out of my chair. again 30fps lowest fps and 55~109fps avg! Right now the computer is hitting over 100fps left and right.
What ever programming arena net did to guild wars 2 it caused the cpu and voltage to clock up and down like a yoyo. Manually setting the CPU makes the voltage and clock speed stable. I hope this info can help some one like it helped me!
P.S. My system specs are
AMD FX 8120 3.1GHZ x8
560ti 1gb stock clocks
16gb of ram
500gb hard drive os
1tb hard drive games
550 watt power supply.

GW2 got nothing to do with cpu clocks/voltages. All that is set in the motherboard bios before you even boot into Windows.
What ever AMD design choices they made for this processor, it caused the cpu and voltage to clock up and down like a yoyo. Manually setting the CPU makes the voltage and clock speed stable. I hope this info can help some one like it helped me!
There! Fixed it for ya!
Thats LLC in bios messing with voltages.

@Cubzz it sure is Guild Wars 2 because the clocks are stable in any other game. The FX processor has turbo mode where it clocks the processor up and down. What ever programming Guild Wars 2 has is freaking out the CPU.
Also before I did anything to the PC the CPU was going over 65*C after I got the CPU cooler and new case the temp was 35*C. Now that I manually set the voltage the temp is staying around 25*c. That’s a 40*C difference and just for reference the CPU ran @ 49*c in eq2 with the old tower and CPU fan. Guild Wars 2 is causing high heat in the FX processor!
I ran some more tests last night and running the game stock @3.1GHZ I am getting 45~89ps and it hit 109fps a few times but its mostly in the 80fps range. And the CPU is running 25*C, so I see no need to overclock!

No… it’s not. Faildozer’s are renown for downclocking whenever they feel like it. If the cpu is >65c then you’ve got a problem with your cooling.

Ive got to agree with cbuzz. Your cpu is downclocking because its getting too hot when playing gw2 and thats why when you manually set the voltage it doesnt downclock. I would check your cpu temps while playing. You could end up screwing up your cpu if its getting so hot it has to downclock.

Aye that fluctuation is caused by those power saving things in BIOS. However disabling them does not help me gain any more fps… O/C’ing to 4/4.3 or higher will give you better performance if you can keep it cool but not much in WvW because the problem has nothing to do with the hardware…

It’s 100% hardware. Amd processors can’t cut the mustard with this game. End of story.
IN Before you call me a fanboi, because I’ve got already got 2 Amd rigs here.

Dude seriously have you ever seen somebody getting 60+fps in WvW Zergs using those fancy 3570K/3770K chips? I play other games without any problems with my Fx8120 platform…

So you are seriously comparing your 3930k to 8120/8150? yeh i see your point..

Did I compare? You asked if I’d seen anyone pulling 60fps in Zergs. I said yes I have.

yeah obviously you missed out the part where I stated 3570k/3770k….
Pretty sure a 3930k fall’s into the “Fancy Chips” category….
Hello peeps ! .. i just added new hardware .. i just passed from Phenom 2 x4 955 BE to Intel i5 3470 and i just wanna say that its a big difference … my settings are set to High only shadows medium and reflection set to terrain and sky , res 1920×1080 and i can pull 25 – 45 fps in WvW on big zerks , outside 60-62 fps allmost constant. My other specs are 8 gb ddr 3 @1600 and evga gtx 560 ti fpb … so u can compare ur FX to my CPU .. here the price of FX8120 its the same with I5 3470 ( 220 eur ).
Any tips for me?
FX-8150 @ 3.9Ghz
ATI Radeon HD 7770
8GB memory
I get 18fps in LA and avg 30-45fps everywhere else.
My temps are fine, 59C max. Latests drivers, bios, fresh Win7 install.
This is super frustrating!

You are very well aware that a rig with your specs should decimate the game with atleast 100fps so why argue anyways? I’m pretty sure you get my point.

I’ve tried all of the above tips and I’m still not even breaking 40fps.
Win 7 64x
FX-6100 @ 3.3Ghz
16GB RAM
GTX 570
I’ve disabled a load of startup gumph and been into BIOS to disabled all power saving features. Any advice?
