Hi all,

I think my gpu is on its way out, after a few bsods (hardware_exceptions), I fiddled around with the card a bit and at least the pc doesn’t crash now – but the game is running like a dog.

The gpu I currently have is an nvidia gtx 460 – up to yesterday, I was fine with the way it ran the game.

The rest of the pc is as follows:

win7 64 bit
6 GB RAM
i7 950 @ 3.07

I know a lot of it is down to budget, so would not be looking to spend more than £200.00

Thanks for any advice

It’s really up to you how much to spend, not knowing what power supply you have I’ll keep it in the same watt range or lower.
First to compair your card to the bottom on the list. This is not exact but will give you a idea.
http://www.hwcompare.com/12059/geforce-gtx-460-1gb-vs-radeon-hd-7850/
AMD 7850, GTX 660/AMD7870, AMD 7870xt
Overclocking the i7 950 would also help with a decent cooler for it (not the stock one) they can get to 4 GHz so 3.6 or so should be fairly easy.

I have a GTX 460Ti and I have to say that the 400 is bad imo.
It runs at insane high temperatures, fan is noisy …. I swapped it 3 months after buying it with GTX 680.

Just may thoughts from user’s experience which is contrary to the review in the link above.

Yeah, I wrote it wrong, alert the typing police.
Nevertheless the point it that 400 generation of nvidia is bad imo and is not worth buying.
If I had spent a little more time on overclocking forums and reading actual user’s comments I would have saved my money and bought the 680 from start.

More time would of showed you only about 10% performance differance in the 680 and 670 with a price differance of $100 and a 7870xt is the best bang for the buck ATM.

Thanks guys, forgot to add the psu, doh..it’s running on 700 watt, so powerful enough for most things I would think.

Volmak, I disagree, the card was excellent and quiet, had no issues with it until now and it’s a few years old

Zerk, thanks for the link, I’ll take a look – at the overlocking also, have water cooling so I guess I should have done this a while back

I think I prefer Nvidia – had a Radeon before this card and really didn’t like it…I know things change a lot in a few years.

What do you guys think of GTX 650 Ti Boost? It has recently ben released and is a resonable price. Seems to be looking ok:

the 650 TI Boots is a VERY good card. have’t had the chance to use it myself, but it blows AMD’s new 7790 out of the water by a long shot. Really wish AMD wasn’t discontinuing the 7850 1 GB and 2Gb….but what can we do about it? lol

Before you buy anything I would overclock the processor and video card, make sure to cut shadows, supper sampling, and reflections down and play the game. The 650ti boost will not be a upgrade if you overclock the video card you have. A 2GB video card if you are using a single 1080p monitor will help none. Before I bought it I would just buy a 650ti and overclock it but again not much of a gain. Pay no notice to the AMD video card haters people are having problems with both brands.
If your video card is really about gone I would get the GTX 660 or AMD 7850/7870 and never look back.
For overclocking the video card download MSI afterburner go for a 10% to 15% overclock and set a custome fan profile 40C=40% fan speed, 80C=100% fan speed, their a box you need to check to make the fan profile active when you boot the PC.
EDIT Also sometimes it helps to reformat the HDD with a fresh install of windows if you have not done this in a few years.

Initial reviews of the 650Ti Boost looked very positive. Nvidia looks set to push AMD pretty hard in that price range. If you’re willing to fill your budget though http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-111992020g is the best bang for your buck. It’s a bit over £200 atm, but if you can wait it’s likely to go just under at some point.

IMO for around £200 i would get the AMD 7870XT ..ether the Sapphire 7870XT or the Club3d 7870XT Joker. I think the Sapphire is a better option.
Its a very good bang for buck card and is mroe than enough for GW2 to play on High.

Though in WvW and busy areas ur CPU is going to hold u back, so be prepaired for that.

The 7870xt will max out GW2 at 80+FPS (supersample on), asuming u have a monitor up to 1080p ofc, and ur CPU can keep up
