Anybody running alienware laptops?
Have you look at the Asus one? They are about to release a new gaming laptop. You might want to check it out.
Alienware is a ripoff. Laptops don’t game well either way.
For sure laptop aren’t meant for gaming but some people want it to be portable to play at their friend places.
I just turn down settings on my laptop when I don’t play at home.
You can get a tricked out Lenovo that’d be capable of something like this. There seems to be something about their design that makes them absolutely impossible to overheat, too.
Max settings in WvW is really pushing it though.
Current gen desktops are having a hard time with WvW. That means you can expect that laptops will struggle with it even after Haswell.
Thanks guys for the answers, although i wish someone who has an Alienware laptop would actually tell me what there experience is like, but none the less thans for the answers
m11x r3 here. game runs like crap. go figure :P
Why not an http://www.eurocom.com/ laptop? They let you choose the parts piece-by-piece.
A new m17x shouldnt have a problem running gw2. My wife has one and she plays on medium high settings and gets 60 fps most everywhere and her laptop is a year old and has just one mobile radeon 6970 card. I would recommend gettig one with a crossfire or sli setup, but you should be fine
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
If you have access to Sager or Eurocom laptops check them out they are essentially Alienwares without the ripoff parts afaik.
I’d also be looking at ASUS.
When I’m not at home I play on a Lenovo T420s with all settings on low, except for Textures on High and Render Sampling on Native and I get between 30-40 fps in PvE.
I haven’t tried out the Mac client yet on my wife’s MacBook Pro yet, I need to get around to it.
A buddy of mine has an Alienware laptop. It plays GW just fine, as far as I know. However, he’s had to have nearly every single part replaced in the year and a half that he’s owned it. He won’t buy another Alienware again. He’s actually hoping that it dies completely so he can buy an ASUS.
I sometimes play on a MSI GX740 and the performance is great so I imagine a recent alienware would have no problems.
I won’t get into any sort of brand debate because I honestly don’t care. The one I mentioned is decent bang for buck. Doesn’t look all that cool (although it is red!) Gets hot as stink but vents it conveniently into my mouse hand, nice and toasty on a cold day.
Running the m18x
i7 – 2820QM
16GB Ram
2×6990M Crossfire.
Everything maxxed, game pretty much runs 60+ everywhere (vsync on). A few areas drops down to high 30’s/40’s but overall just as good as my desktop.
alienware is way over priced. Don’t throw you money away.
For comparison a self built desktop with a GTX 680, 16GB Ram, SSD and a few other toys would run me around $1500. The alienware is rather expensive being upwards of $3000 depending what you put in it.
Pretty much any high end “Gaming” laptop is going to come with a massive premium; eurocom, falcon, and even the gaming versions of Asus and MSI.
The only benefit it has over a desktop is the fact that I can game anywhere in the world, which for my line of work is pretty much a necessity. If you don’t need portability go for a desktop. Otherwise the alienware is a decent compromise.
I have an Alienware m18x and it runs the game perfectly at max settings. WvW runs fine as well.
Lenovo is garbage please do not buy from them. I tried to get a laptop from them. Sent the wrong specs, promised a replacement and it had the wrong specs and then they took over 30 days to refund my money.
Get an MSI Gaming Notebook, its very similar to the Alienware except they don’t charge a premium.

This model is normally around $1899 tricked out but I got it at Newegg onsale and with rebates for $1000.

Having an M15x from 2010, GW 2 runs on nearly max settings. FPS only went down in afew cases like dynamic dragon events – anyhow, I haven’t played WvW yet so I can’t share any experiences here.
Configuration:
i7 740qm (1,73 GHz)
8 GB RAM

80 GB Intel SSD

Yeah, the bottom line is that you should find what you want on Alienware, then find another company that produces the same laptop (spec wise) for a lot cheaper. Then you can just buy all the bells-and-whistles components you want until you fit into your original budget.
Alienware : Overpriced hunks of junk.
Ok maybe not total hunks of junk but they are most deffinatly overpriced. I HIGHLY recommend NOT buying an Alienware.
Asus,, Acer, MSI, Clevo ..etc.. are the ones i recommend you look at.
You can usualy find really good products with the less known companis, since those companies have to build good quality and reasonably priced products to get well known in the firts place. unlike Dell/Alienware who a verywell known and are thus milking poeple for money with relativly poor quality/value products.
For example BTO Notebooks.
Just doing some quick googling and i found out about these guys. Never heared of them myself, and even though their website isnt english i coudl still chekc out their laptops. Even me, who has alway used desktops for gaming, am impressed by their laptop rigs, they looks like monster gaming platforms and you can get a really nice one for around 1000 euros. Their performance models range from 850 to 2000 euros.
Though with that said i still stand by desktops for ‘pure’ gaming performance
