Q:
I just installed a new fresh copy of Win7 on the following:
-Win7 Pro 64bit
-Intel Core 2 CPU 6320 @ 2GHz
-2GB RAM
-NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT (latest drivers)
With low settings in GW2, I am getting 5 to 10 FPS everywhere. I did a search on reddit and found a recent question asking if the latest patch helping with NVIDIA cards. Is there an issue with this game and NVIDIA cards? Why am I getting under 10 framerate….
I can run modern games like Borderlands 2 and Torchlight 2 as well as Mass Effect 3 on low settings with near 60 FPS just fine.
I also read the FPS sticky in this forum and applied those NVIDIA settings, didn’t seem to help at all.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Nvidia card run this game sweet, your particular 6year old Nvidia video card will not however. Your at exactly minimum requirements. Minimum requirements = slideshow with ANY PC game.
Hope this helps.

Well, the 2GHz processor is going to be pretty slow for GW2 and all the calculations that need to be done for the complex scenes that need to be rendered in GW2, especially when there are a lot of people around. Only having 2GB of RAM is going to hurt since GW2 will want to use about 1.2 GB of that or more and the OS will want the rest. So the computer is going to be swapping memory constantly, which will also put more strain on the CPU.
While Borderlands 2, Torchlight 2 and Mass Effect 3 are “new” games, they are not nearly as complex as GW2. They may look impressive, but their worlds/levels are not nearly as large as the zones in GW2. Also, they do not use nearly as complex geometry as GW2 uses. Most of the detail in Torchlight is done with detailed textures on simple surfaces – and relatively few surfaces. GW2 uses detailed textures on much more complex geometry and MUCH MORE geometry than Torchlight 2. And that puts a MUCH larger strain on your computer’s processing ability, both CPU-wise and GPU-wise.
As for “the latest drivers” for your video card, the probably don’t help at all. The “latest drivers” are primarily optimized for the latest video cards. They still have the functionality to work with your card, but through legacy code. The newer features of the drivers will require specific features of the newer hardware to truly take advantage of. So having an older card is going to be a hinderance as well.
The first idea would probably be to increase your RAM to minimize memory paging. Getting another gig of RAM would probably give you enough memory to let the OS and GW2 run without competing for all the available RAM. After that, how much do you want to spend? You can upgrade your video card to one with better capabilities, but that might require you to upgrade your power supply as well. Trying to upgrade the CPU might mean new motherboard, new RAM, and at that point, you should probably upgrade the graphics card just to avoid it being the anchor that holds back your system.
Other than that, no, you’re not seeing an issue between GW2 and nVidia cards. You’re just seeing the problems related to running a new, complex MMO on old hardware. It’s pretty much to be expected, I’m afraid.

this should answer a lot of your Q’s about your system’s performance

You have to understand OP.
A MMORPG is CPU bassed. Even the best MMORPG’s that are coded to be more GPU bassed , strain the CPU more than single player and Multi player games.
That said, you using a computer using tech that is 5+ years old. Some individual parts may be 4 or 3 years old but the tech its using is easily 5 years old. You cant expect to play ‘ALL’ modern games with good fps.
Any upgrade to modern tech for your rig will requir pritty much an entire new computer.
If you got a new GPU, you would need a new motherboard for the correct PCE-e V2.0 slots (x8 or x16). Even without that issue, a new GPU would be bottlenecked by your current CPU and RAM speeds.
A New CPU would requir a new motherboard chipset and thus new RAM, and likely a new Powersupply and Case (if your case is BTX for example, you would need a ATX case)
So upgrading ether of those 2 core components would requir all other components to be upgraded to match.
Theres a general rule of thumb with computer upgrades for a ‘gaming rig’.
1) Spend around £600-£800 every 1 or 2 years to keep up to date.
or
2) Spend around £1200-£1600 every 3 to 4 years to keep up to date.
Prices change depending on tech changes, i.e chipset changes which requir extra parts to upgrade
If you go with option 1, you end up building a rig that is ‘adequate’ for that years games and maybe the next years games. So you looking at medium to high settings..possible ultra/max depending on the game… for that years games and the next years games. After that its likely you would have to drop detail level and/or see FPS droping to undesired levels.
Option 2 would give you a computer that is more than good enough for that years games and liekly the next years games also..so ultra/max settings giving great FPS. After that going to the 3rd and 4th years it will likely handle games for thos years at medium/high settings with acceptable frame rates. After that tough frames drop and quality levels drop.
For example, roughly 4 years ago i bought a Dell XPS 720 H2C (my 1st and last prebuilt computer). It lasted me untill a couple months ago. I spent around £2000 when i bought that computer, the computer itself was around £1200 the extra money went into upgrading my sound system and VDU.
This year i spent £1000 but only on the computer since my sound system is still top range and my VDU is fine untill i can find a 120mhz 1440p 40" screen for an acceptable price. I will be upgrading my GPU to a 700 series when they are released. So my total spend for this upgrade rig will be around £1400.

Don’t let the apologists fool you – this game is particularly pants when it comes to optimisation. You will either need to upgrade or just wait for them to spend some time streamlining the game.

Are you trolling? I got issues with my gtx 680 in GW2.
