Hello,

During the betas and after the launch I’ve been experiencing frequent BSOD’s while playing Guild Wars 2.

A file called “nvklft.sys” is causing the BSOD, this is a system file from my Nvidia driver.

I’ve tried following solutions: formatting my system, lowering the settings, different drivers, underclocking, … nothing helps.

I’ve also noticed that my laptop gets very hot while playing GW2, around 100°c (GPU and CPU).

Cleaning out the dust didn’t help.

Convinced that it was my laptop, I started the search for a solution for the BSOD’s and the overheating.

Therefore I ran benchmarks, played other (demanding) games like BF3 and the Witcher 2 (at the same time), profiled programs, even let the laptop get stuck in an infinite loop/recursion loop, but no BSOD and no overheating.

My system appears to be as stable as you can find.

I’ve contacted Asus about this matter, the only thing they say is “format your system”, which obviously isn’t much help.

My laptop uses the Optimus technology, and yes, my Nvidia card is working when I play GW2.

And yes, I’ve read the “hardware mismatch error”, saying that driver 301.42 doesn’t really support GW2.

Could anybody help me pls?

- Nvidia Geforce GT 555M
- 6GIG ram

Have you also updated your BIOS? or even maybe VB?os (gpu bios)… Check them if they are the latest aswell.

Hi,

I don’t have the same issue as you, but I had BSOD on another game. Same issue as you, cpu runs very hot. I’m having a NVidia card not same as yours though.

Eventually, I did found out what went wrong. I upgraded my card drivers to the latest drivers and as long as I ran something graphic intensive, I am prone to have BSOD. I was expecting better performance from a new driver, but it caused me more headaches.

I downgraded my drivers to the originally installed, and the game ran perfectly without issues.

Hope you solve your problem.

100ºC is boiling hot, something is really wrong with your laptop’s heat dissipation. Do you have a pet? If so, read this.

With those kind of temps I would consider cleaning the die of the cpu & gpu with isopropyl alcohol and applying some good thermal paste.

Before you go reapplying thermal pastes, i would check the heatsink/fan end of your laptop and make sure there isnt a layer of blanket dust between the fan and the heatsink.

You will probably have to remove the base of your laptop to get to this but im afraid there is no easy solution. Only other things you can do is get yourself a nice cooling mat for your laptop and make sure you only use it on a solid surface. Resting a laptop directly on your lap or on a cushion or sofa or anything will cause it to overheat.

This ^. Anything going past 75ºC is a big warning sound, past 80ºC means there is something very wrong somewhere. At 100ºC you are literally killing your laptop with the effect from electromigration inside the chips.

There is no assurance your laptop even uses thermal paste, it could use thermal adhesives to keep the coolers in place.

99% of the times the cause for trouble is either pet hair, dust or dust+cigarette smoke allocated between the heatspreader fins and the fan.
