Q:

GW2 has been playing mostly fine since I bought it months ago. In early January I started having crashing issues (Error 1450 disk read error I think it was). I ended up deleting a bunch of old games which freed up about 60GB and the problem went away. Now, starting yesterday, I’m suddenly getting blue screens when I click “Play” in the launcher. I click it, the game window opens, but before I get the character screen, it blue screens with a Stop 8e on nv4_mini.sys. Yes, I know this is the nvidia driver. I already checked, and I have the latest version. I’ve also gone through and disabled just about everything that starts at boot time (other services), but that didn’t help either. And the game ran just fine last week with all those things running. I also verified I don’t have the /3G thing in my boot.ini (saw a suggestion to check for that since stop 8e conditions sometimes indicate a problem with pool/paged memory). I’ve run chkdsk and defraged recently too.

Attached is the Game Advisor log.

I found this forum post:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Fix-found-my-black-screen-login-problems

Which basically suggests renamed/deleting the local.dat file in the gw2 directory. Several others posting in that thread indicated it helped fix their problems. One user stated he was having blue screen issues with nv4_mini.sys also, and renaming the local.dat file fixed his issue.

One thing I’ll note, the local.dat file I renamed was over 34MB in size. The new one that was created was only 2MB. So it appears that perhaps something bloats this file over time.

I’ve spent over 3 hours on this now, and I need to go to sleep. I’ll try playing again tomorrow and see if it still works.

I too have recently experienced a Blue screen 2 days ago while crafting in LA watching a youtube video. I also like to add that I have a Nvidia graphics card with the latest drivers.

Edited:
My friend that I normally play with also experienced a blue screen on feb 13 AFTER the so called maintenance patch running a better Nvidia graphics card then me with up-to-date drivers

Well you already know the culprit, its your graphics drivers. There is nothing the developers can do to “fix” this as its your system at fault.

You need to re-install your graphics drivers. When doing so make sure you tick the box in the nvidia installer for a “clean install” option. Make sure its the correct drivers for your operating system, and ONLY use official drivers to ensure correct operation.

I don’t think you’re reading what the OP or I said, we had no problems at all 1-3 weeks ago, we have the most recent driver updates. So unless I’m missing something, how can it be the graphics drivers randomly failing especially after a most recent maintenance update?

No I read the ops post entirely and understand precisely the problem. The graphics drivers are causing a blue screen for the OP. How? Well graphics drivers are extremely easy to corrupt, anything from a bad shutdown to a minor power fluctuation right the way through to a simple AV update can cause drivers to become damage or corrupted.

The issue is not the game, or it would be a different error code in the BSOD event. As the op stated he had data storage problems already, so its extremely easy for the drivers to then become damaged.

My earlier advice stands; A clean instalation of the graphics drivers is required. If BSOD’s of the same type continue after doing so, then that points to a system hardware fault; quite possibly a HDD in the throws of failure.

Yeah, I’d toss my coin in with this. Clean installing a new driver doesn’t take long and could resolve the issue. For everyone out there with an Nvidia card, a new WHQL driver is out. I’ve heard it fixes the glowing textures/objects, so I’d give it a shot.

Jokermo, this thread is not about your problem. This thread is about the original posters error with the game.

If you want support for your issue, post a new thread with full details of the issue and a DXdiag.

Having the same issue as OP. Bsod on 2 different computers on clicking play in launcher.
Two different computers running same type OPS, different versions of nvidia drivers, different hardware, but exact same error. This seems to have started after a GW2 update. Clearly to us a GW2/Nvidia issue.
