A:

I quoted the other thread to keep all the information in the proper sub-forum.

Anyways, either of those GPUs can push 1080p at 30FPS, but I would look at the GTX 760 rather than the GTX 660Ti. Just make sure the HD 7870 is the XT version since its the version worth getting.

The real problem is getting any CPU to do large WvW battles at 30FPS. For this you will need to overclock either CPU you mentioned to something like 4.5Ghz to see close to 30FPS in large WvW battles. You’ll likely also want to turn down character detail in WvW and maybe culling as well depending if you want performance or visibility.

Depending on what else you use the computer for, an i7 3770K would make sense, but for most people an i5 3570K works. If you do lots of audio/video encoding or stream the game you’re playing, then the i7 3770K would be a better choice. It should also be noted that Haswell came out and you can get the replacements of the processors I mentioned (i5 4670K and i7 4770K).

Thank you for your reply. Can I ask you a little bit more explanation?
Firstly, what is a good motherboard for the build? And secondly, how do I overclock a processor?

You might think I’m really stupid and I am possibly ignorant of these things. So, kindly help me understand. And does HASWELL improve performance a great deal over the IVY BRIDGE?

I can’t really make a good recommendation for a motherboard, I haven’t really chosen one for a long time and am out of the loop with those.

As for the differences of Haswell and Ivy Bridge, performance wise, Haswell is on average 5% faster clock for clock. So its not a big deal. If you purchase an Ivy Bridge, you are buying into an end of life socket (LGA 1155) while Haswell (LGA 1150) may have minor upgrades coming to it in the future. The upgrades likely won’t be very exceptional. I don’t see Intel making any huge leaps and bounds here for another couple years…Which means that by the time you upgrade from a i5 4670K or i7 4770K the LGA 1150 socket will likely be end of life.

As far as overclocking goes, I find it easiest to follow a guide and learn from there.

Thank you very much for your time and answers.

Hey All,
I am a new GW2 player. I have two level 40 characters and one level 5 character. I’m doing what most new MMO players do – you know, staring around, being awe struck at the shiny stuff people wear and simply being silly around 80 chars just to befriend them.
So, I’m doing all this from my old lappy – Core i5 2510E, GT 540M and 8GB 1333Mhz. I get as far as 14-20FPS in normal gameplay, 9FPS in PvP/Champion/Dungeons/Events and 2FPS in WvW. :P Somehow I was living only with that for three months now.
Now, I have saved up some money to upgrade to a desktop probably by the 20th of August. I have decided to spend a maximum $1000-$1100 on this rig. My research for the past two weeks have brought me to the following specs:
1. Intel Core i7 3770 or Core i5 3570K (Confused help needed)
2. Kingston HyperX or Corsair Dominator 2000Mhz DDR3 RAM
3. 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD (already have)
4. GeForce GTX 660Ti or AMD HD 7870 (Confused help needed)
5. 24" Samsung Monitor (already own one)
Kindly help me decide on the parts and also suggest a good Motherboard in my budget.
My questions are:
1. Will the above rig give me a constant 30FPS in Normal World (PvE) as well as WvW?
2. Will the above CPU/GPU combo be able to handle the bottlenecks and throttles better than my laptop in 720P (1280 × 720) resolution and graphics at HIGH (not ULTRA) and still give me 30FPS?
3. Will the throttling of FPS to 30 better the performance of the system greatly?
Thank you very much for your time and answers.

For the motherboard, I would ask the recommendation of some more people here I guess. You see, I live in the Middle East (Dubai, UAE). So, there are certain products that are supported here and some that are not.

ASUS and Gigabyte are among the few vendors that offer full support centers here. So, I’d better stick with one of those. I’ll watch that video now and try to understand what they are doing. I noticed that he is using Maximus VI Extreme in the video. Maybe I can buy something in the RoG series here without having to pay a premium price.

So, I guess I’ll read up more on which one is the best bang for buck between i5 3570K and i7 3770K if I’m only going to game in 720P resolution and mostly only GW2 and that too Not in Ultra.

EDIT: Also, the main reason I’m going for 3rd Gen CPUs is that I already have Corsair Bronze 600W PSU and it is not Haswell certified as I got it some months ago. I don’t want to get another PSU just because of the new CPU. (I have a very tight budget right now what with all my school fees and stuff)

Thank you very much for your time and answers.

Thank you all
@Sagramor, @Stormcrow, @Fade, @CalmestChaos, @SpiderPIG and @Ilithis Mithilander for your time, effort and answers.
I’ve been able to decide on my build with the help of your suggestions and some extensive local research and narrow it down to the following:
1. Intel Core i5 4670K
2. Gigabyte GA-H87-D3H
3. Kingston HyperX 1600Mhz 16GB (2×8GB)
4. Corsair 128GB SSD
5. Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 XT (Since 760 is not available here and this fits snugly in my budget)
Hopefully, I’ll get 30+ FPS in all the PvE, Dungeon content and bearable FPS in WvW as long as I keep my settings Med/High.
Thank you all for your ideas, clarifications and suggestions to help me.
