So as the title says I am looking to build a new PC, and it will mostly be playing GW2. I may be doing some streaming/youtubing or stuff like that but not entirely sure. The specs I want would ideally be:
i7 3770+gtx770+8gb of RAM

but I’m not sold on Intel I really like the AMD FX Vishera 8350.

So which should I go with?
Note: my graphics card and RAM will stay the same, just the processor and the motherboard as well ofc.

Go Intel. Nothing against the FX-8350 but the extra cores aren’t as useful in GW2 as single core performance and Intel beats AMD, no contest.

Why not go Haswell? Yes it’s a touch more expensive being the new kid but socket 1155 is a dead end.

You may also want to invest in an SSD. I know this is a shift in my previous position about SSDs but I’ve been watching system activity while in heavily populated areas, LA by the MF, and what I see is an enormous amount of reads, lasting well over a minute at 40-50MB/s, which I attribute to building all the other players’ actual avatars since the majority of the drive activity stops once all the generic placeholder avatars go away. Sound effects also go away during this time, I assume because reading sound files off of the HD is secondary to avatar generation. The drive activity returns when I run over to the TP where I find more generic avatars and once again the drive activity stops once the players’ actual avatars appear. And it reappears when I jog back over to the MF and Bank where I find generic avatars again. My culling settings are set to high/high.

An SSD should speed that, other player’s avatars being generated, up considerably.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

RIP City of Heroes

Get the K series intell processor and a decent aftermarket cooler for it like a Cooler Master Hyper 212 so you can overclock the processor some. paired with a Z series motherboard.
The Haswell processor is newer but will not make much of a differance and the 1150 socket is also dead after you buy it by the time you need to upgrade again you need a new motherboard anyhow.

3770 K or 4770 K .. ether is fine. But Intel is the way to go. Nothing against AMD, but they have not been in the high performance game for a while now.

One thing i will point out though is this.

Since 2nd gen i series, CPU performance has increase by precisely ..zip, when u take OC’ing into account.

The 2500k to 2700k
The 3820 to 3970x
The 3570k & 3770K
The 4670k & 4770k
The 4820k & 4960X

All of them, when OC’d to their thermal limit on identical coolers, will average roughly the same performance per core. The only difference is between i5’s, i7’s, and i7e’s..that being the number of cores/threads.

So bassicaly u could buy a 2550k, a 3570k, a 4670k (they all have the same 3.8ghz clock at stock) and OC them all, and due to their individual heat limits, the end result is they all perform the same. The 2550k will clock higher than the 3570k and the 3570k will clock higher than 4670k, thus negating the small clock for clock performance increase each one has over the former.
Even the up coming broadwell CPU’s will only have icnreased power efficiency of around 30% over haswell (4670k//4770k) whislt mainting the same performance.
So dont worry about dead end sockets, by the time intel is presured by AMD to release a more powerfull performaning CPU, u would expect what ever socket ur on to be old anyway.

3930k 4.6ghz | NH-D14 Cooler | P9x79 Pro MB | 16gb 1866mhz G.Skill | 128gb SSD + 2×500gb HDD

All of this exactly ^^^^^^
I have my 2500K clocked to 5GHz and the preformance is about the same as any processor that’s newer even after it’s overclocked so their no reason for me to upgrade.

Get an i5 over an i7 unless you’re doing a lot of photo/video editing/rendering. The HT won’t make much of a difference in games as of yet because they don’t take advantage of all of the cores, with a couple exceptions.

Also, whatever you get, go for a k version so you can overclock it. Intel CPUs have linear gains when overclocked, so you’re pretty much getting quite a bit of extra performance for your dollar.

AMD’s single-threaded performance pales in comparison to Intel’s. If you want the best gameplay experience, you must go Intel.

I have a 3770K that I delidded. With my H100 cooler, it never goes above 50C when playing GW2.
