Hello,

I’m running into an issue in Guild Wars 2, and this game alone, where my CPU temp with consistently run at about 80-90 degrees. The closest I’ve seen is Crysis 2 on ultra, which was admittedly more then my system could handle, and even still, I was below 75.
I’m running a i7 2600, on an Asus Gen-Z microATX board. I have a AMD 6950 as well (1gb unit). I’ve run a significant number of other games, none come close to this temp, even on higher settings then what I currently run GW2 at.

Drivers and firmware are as up to date as possible.

This seems to be an graphics engine issue, where there is too much strain put on the CPU, vs the GPU.

I’ve tried everything that I can think of to remedy the situation, but I’m at a loss at this point.
I’m currently running Speedfan to monitor the temp, and control the fan speed. Even with the fans constantly running at 100%, it can’t keep the temp down.

This has been an issue since launch, however it appears to be getting worse, as previously I would run at about 80 when playing GW2, now it’s over that temp the majority of the time.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, as at this point I’m going to have to stop playing.

Well nothing that can realy be done here on their side. The game just bash the cpu and thats a fact. You need to improve your cooling. Hyper 212 evo is a cheap and good aftermaker cooler. My i7-3770 clocked to 4.1 ( mind that its not a K chip so it will run hotter then k chips on same clocks) runs at 65 max in gw2 at 1 core. I use nh-d14 from noctua but there is no point in getting smtn as huge as this (i only got it cuz it was a good deal:P). Evo +mx-2 would probly drop your temps by 20 or so if your using stock cooler.

Yeah, I’m using a stock cooler, and a less then ideal case.
The replacement CPU fan/heatsink has always been in the works, just a matter of getting together the extra cash together. Need a micro case too, since it would optimize the airflow on the case.
I was just hoping for some type of software solution in the interim
Thanks for the input though.

I agree with Megido with the exception that there IS something that can be done on their side. Optimize the game for frack sakes! It has been months and the game still runs like crap in wvw and events.
Do NOT get your hopes up that there will be any patches to improve performance.

I do agree with you in that sense.
ArenaNet needs to work on the issues with the game engine. They were there in beta, and we were told that the optimization would take load of the CPU, in favor of the GPU. In reality, that never appeared to happen.

I’m curious if anyone has tried hard capping the FPS to something like 30 or so. Right now I’m running everything on high with about 55-60 FPS. If I limit, that in theory could take a % of the load off my system.

Well the game fells meh for me at 30 fps. Not smooth at all. But that might be personal preference or that im using amd which is usualy not as smooth as nvidia. Btw you wont rly fry your cpu at thoes temps so dont worry.

I cap it at 30 FPS on my laptop while overclocking it absolutelly helps keep the temps down, but i think it is kind of nonsense thing to do on a desktop, just get yourself a 30$ (212EVO) CPU cooler and problem solved, if ur case do no has propper ventilation just leave the lateral door open, no big deal just clean inside 1 per week.

OP.

Your rig should be able to handle running ur CPu at max load for long period of time, thats what they r designed for. If ur not OC’ing then there is probably an issue with ur air circulation or a fault with ur stock cooler. Its ether dirty or the TIM hasnt been applied properly.

Ether way the coolemraster Evo 212 is a good cheap cooler to use. People use them to OC and u could easily get a 2600k (if urs is a ‘k’) to 4.5ghz on it. Ofc u dont have to OC, u could just use the cooler with CPU on stock and it wil ldo just fine. 90c is most deffinatly hot and not what u should be getting even when running full pelt.

I seem to have fixed the issue buy capping FPS at 60, and enabling Vsync.
I cleaned out my CPU fan, since there was a little dust.
Paired with Speedfan, I’ve got the temp to go below 70 most of the time, which is a huge improvement.

Just as a final note about this…
The CPU usage was never that high, maybe 5% per core. I have other games that run CPU levels very similar, yet never caused overheating. The only time I had anything near this type of issue was with java applets, when there was some form of bug in Java itself.
It’s odd, but I’m happy to get my CPU into more manageable levels.
Gen2 i7’s run a bit hot anyway, so anything under 80 is good.

gen 2 i7’s has nothign to do with it ..nor is the app. You should not be having heat issues. its a hardware fault of some sort ..whether it be bad TIM application, faulty Heatsink.. or bad airflow. you should look into it.

I run a OC’d 6core gen 2 i7 ..the 3930k its at 4.6ghz at 1.36v. I keep it cool with a top end air cooler and even at max load (all 6 cores 12 threads at 100% load) i get around the 75c-80c mark. Your getting that with a 4core 8 thread non OC’d cpu without even being on max load…that shows a problem.
