CPU too slow?

Hey everyone.
I recently bought Guilds wars 2, installed it and was about to play….it lagged. I mean, 8-12 fps in the starting area, even with all the super low settings on.

I did my research and it seems my CPU is just too old. However…the minimum requirments say I only 2.0 Ghz..and I am running with 2.2
So you would think I would be able to play..at least on minimum.
On “canyourun it.com” it said my computer was super fast for this game, the only weak part is my 2.2ghz processor.

I’m just wondering if this is normal or if I could somehow cleanup/overclock it a little it to at least be able to play it…even on minimum.

Here are my specs.

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Processor: AMD Phenom™ 9550 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8200 (Microsoft Corporation – WDDM v1.1)

I am working on upgrading right now..but in the meantime I hope i can find a temporary fix, even if it means playing on low graphics.
Cheers!

Yes, you are right, your CPU is too old along with your graphics card. The ‘can I run this game’ sites only tell you if your computer can launch the game, not what FPS you will get or whether the game is actually playable. In their eyes, as long as you can launch the game, it’s up to you how you want to play the game, whether its at 60FPS or sub 10FPS. Normally companies toss up a second set of system specifications that are labeled ‘recommended specifications’ which is what you’ll want in order to be able to play the game at a decent frame rate. ArenaNet does not have these specifications because there are no systems that can play this game reliably (in all areas) at 30+FPS without overclocking.

Sure you can try overclocking and getting the little extra performance, but it’s not going to equate to breaking the 20FPS barrier. Your best bet is to get a new CPU/GPU/RAM/Motherboard and salvage CD ROM/Hard Drive/Power Supply (if it’s powerful enough)/fans/etc from your old computer. There are a ton of threads about what people recommend buying to play this game relatively well, but if you post a budget then I’m sure people will flock to give suggestions on what to buy.

Bassicaly i could just repeat what llithis said ..but im not ..becouse its been said :P

Computer components generaly only retain their edge on performance for so long. Up to 4 years at the outset for high end stuff, 3 years for mid range stuff, and 2 or under for low end gear.

Your computer is past its usefull life, OC’ing wont help u much. even if u get 10% more performance out of ur CPU its like saying whats 10% of 1 (0.1) vs 10% of 100 (10)..urs is the former.

The Geforce 8200 isnt even a gaming card back when it was new, its a very very very slow card. You could play PvE much better if u had a better GPU.

This link wil ltake u to a page for bench scores.

The kind of card u need nowerdays is in the top half of the ‘high end’ list (ignor what the name of the list is called, they aint all high end, only the top 15 or so are actually high end, below that they r mid range and lower). Your GPU isnt on that last at all, and thats syaing somthing. Even worse is ..its not even on the Mid – high range graph !, its sooo slow that its at the bottom of the ‘Low – mid range’ list.
At the very least u need a card that score 2000 or more.. urs scores 81.

I don’t know too much about AMD cpus but your quad core is definitely not the problem. It’s the GPU. It looks like the 8200 is an integrated card on the motherboard rather than a dedicated GPU. It was meant for running windows and maybe watching movies, but not games.

Tom’s Hardware has a good list of pretty much all GPUs over the last 15+ years.

^This.

I have a much older dual-core CPU, but my GPU is a Geforce 8800GT.

Some of what you are seeing is the result of the 8200, it makes Intel’s HD graphics look fast. It’s a motherboard integrated graphics solution. It has only 8 shaders. It’s in the same performance ballpark as a Geforce 3 TI500.

The fact you are seeing what you are seeing is amazing. Just about any modern discrete card would be a huge improvement, even something a lowly as a GT 630/640 or an HD 6570/6670. Then you can look at if your CPU is holding you back.
