So the new ATI Catalyst beta drivers 13.2 announce improved Latency Performance in Guild Wars 2. But what does this exactly mean or in what can we see improvement?

decrease fps , but better reactivity between you and the game. Latency is the amount of time it takes to for the command to process from input to result. By decreasing latency, your toon will feel much quicker at a price of some fps. This update is good news.

You can read about it here:

http://techreport.com/review/24218/a-driver-update-to-reduce-radeon-frame-times

The guys at tech report highlighted the issue in the first place. I installed the driver last night and it makes a big difference (for me, HD 7950), the game play is now buttery smooth. Used to have a noticeable micro stutter before this driver.

I did some test, Lion Arch 60 seconds benchmark (Plaza to Armor Vendor and back). Resolution 2720 by 1700 at max (frametimes)

On all test runs, through Lion Arch, the avg. frametime is above 30ms.

Anyone using this driver have trouble with using Print Screen to take screenshots? Most of the time it’s fine, but once in a while the screen freezes and stutters but if I alt tab it fixes everything. I can replicate the bug easily by just spamming Print Screen until it happens.

I know it’s still a beta driver, but I’m just wondering if anyone else is having this problem.

I have this problem with 3 different GPUs with this driver (6950, 6970, and 7750). But never had this problem with my previous driver for all 3 (12.8).

I’ve been skimming through the link posted by Inhibitor above and am left wondering whether the frame latency spikes are an issue with the GPU/drivers, or the game engine. nVidia and AMD seem to have taken different approaches in solving it. It seems as though nVidia have chosen to make their GPU play smoother (albeit with slightly lower average framerates) across the board, whereas AMD is targeting fixes to specific games like Skyrim and GW2 with this beta driver.

Is AMD just testing the water before making these changes more broadly, or do the targeted fixes highlight issues with specific game engines and/or the GPU’s handling of them?

The article mentions that AMD is looking to incorporate latency testing into their strategy going forward, so that is further evidence that it’s likely a GPU/driver issue. I don’t understand why the article then (and AMD’s beta driver) focus on Skyrim and GW2.

Which is? This driver are not supposed to improve FPS, just fix the latency issue make games sutter on radeon cards, so ur FPS using this fix should be arround the same if not lower. If u are having FPS issues is most likelly a CPU problem cuz this game engine is terribly bad optimized so u will need a very very powerfull CPU to improve game performance.

Yeah same here. Been using 12.8 for months and never noticed anything, and decided to install 13.1 to see if it would help improve performance overall, where I first noticed this stuttering. But just installing the 13.2 did nothing. It seems V-Sync has to be turned on for this to work…at least for me.
