So I just got a new computer, like 10x better than my old one. However, whenever I open Guild Wars 2, my computer immediately shuts down as soon as I hit play. I am given a short page about how my motherboard detected an unsafe surge. This is unusual, since my power supply is about 3x stronger than my previous one and I never had any troubles with my previous computer.

My only thought is that my new motherboard is stricter when it comes to detecting power surges, which causes the shutdown. Would purchasing a surge protector fix this? It still seams strange that this only happens with Guild Wars 2 and has never happened before. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated!

That’s an odd one for sure. Check your protection settings in your BIOS, you may be able to disable that (at your own risk) also check to make sure your voltages are stable and if in doubt try swapping out your PSU for another just to test. It’s not uncommon at all to get a bad PSU new, which model do you have?

Stress test your system and see if you can replicate the shutdown. (see Part 5.1)

Good news is your computer is new so likely warranty still in affect if its due to hardware defects.

If u have a cheap PSU it could easily be a bad one. What make u got ?

i wouldnt disable the surge protection in the bios ..unless ur OC ofcourse.

U can test see what is causing the surge by running ether a CPU benchmark or a GPu benchmark. Which ever one causes a shutdown is the one thats causing the PSu to surge. It might be that u have al lthe power connectors trying to run of the same internal PSU rail. try switching to a different power connector wire coming from the PSU to the GPU or motherboard.

I have a coolmax 650w power supply, cost about $65. I will do some benchmark tests and update this when I get results.
