i dont know if this is just coincidental but when I forced the process gw2.exe closed from Task manager I got in immediately on the next try…. probalby just luck.

Didn’t help me (tried it three times, after trying to just restart the client half a dozen times, and rebooting my machine). I suspect it is random.

Seems to be a problem with temporary files.
Running Ccleaner fixed it for me (i’m too lazy to hunt down the specific file/folder), just like it fixes the glitch where no text shows when trying to sell on the trading post.
I just got this error for the first time this morning.

had same connection issue just let it sit there idle in the background for 5min then it popped to my login

Just chiming in to say I’m hit with the problem as well. Sigh.
I am on the East coast as well, since it seems other people are having the same issue as me.
Unfortunately i cannot just simply reconnect and make it go further, the connection error still persists and i make no progress. I also have tried reinstalling the entire program……before i was at the new 110 files before it stopped, now i’m stuck at 5500……so not an improvement.
I do not believe it is something on my end…….i think this is something on Anet’s end since i could barely connect to even reply to this thread a minute ago……

I have this issue as well. Tried all the suggestions posted so far (thank you, though) and it is still retrying.
It’s been sitting there retrying for 20 minutes. Going to close it and do something else

I closed the client and now I have the error again. There must be a problem with the login server.

Have the Issue here as well, dont think its an east coast or specific provider thing because Im in Brazil. Have tried the suggestions and have had no luck. I was just playing 30 minutes ago.
Edit: Finally got back in. It just happened nothing I did seem to help, just sortta worked this time.

I was playing last night. Go to log in today and I am getting this too. Tried a reboot and end task, not working. Just waiting I guess to see if there’s any update.

Deleted the one file: C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\Guild Wars2\Local.dat
I did that and was able to get back in.

both the kill gw2.exe in the windows resource monitor and restart gw2 or clean temp files with cc cleaner works for me and i dun know why the temp files which used to be 500mbs during every regular sweep turns out to 1gbs++ earlier?

So, I managed to log on but ended up logging off shortly after.
Trying to log in again and I’m getting another connection error.
It acts like it wants to download something but it flips between 1 and 0 kb
I’m getting this connection error and a combination of the black screen on startup issue (nVidia), beginning today. Sometimes when I start up I’ll get the downloading at 1/0kb, and the error message. Sometimes when I start up, it’ll let me log in and click the play button, but when it starts up it’s the dreaded black screen.
Never had any problems before today. I was happily playing at 2am last night. I’ve tried the guidelines for dealing with the black screen issue, which don’t work, as well as rebooting, the -repair command, etc.

Exactly what I’m getting. Glad I’m not the only one who’s getting the black screen/bg music issue as well as the connection error. Thought it was just me!
I was having this problem. The last time I tried right-click>Run as Administrator and it loaded right up.

I had this, tried running as admin alone and didn’t work, also tried delete the .tmp file alone (without running as admin) and it didn’t work. But after doing both, clearing deleting the .tmp file and then running as admin it did.
So it seems like it’s a problem with permissions being given to write the .tmp file.

I’m hit with this problem this morning as well. :\ No amount of retries is fixing it so far… ANet please give us some response. It’s been hours apparently.
We are having the same issue at our house. Internet is working, and resetting the router did nothing.
It seems to come and go. (Southern Ontario btw). Couildn’t get in earlier, then I could. Played a bit and left, came back to play and error is back. Came here to read an Anet update (nothing official), and as I am writing this I got my login screen. So I closed it just see and the error is back. Closed it again and after a few tries my log on screen is back.
It’s not on our end—-and all the solutions offered just happen to be coincidental.

having this as well, no idea what’s going on, first i start the client and it says “Downloading 0 (0KB/S)”, both zeroes keep jumping to 1 and back again, then i get “connection error, retrying”
Nothing from Anet on their facebook page as well. At least it comes and goes.

Same issue here. Got in after the 4th try. Judging by the fact that this thread is 13 hours old with still no resolution on the matter, one can’t help but conclude that support doesn’t work weekends…
Same issue, just logged on now and seems to be working fine, hope it lasts.
Waiting, and nothing happens.
Ccleaner does nothing—I could go make a cup of coffee and come back and it works.
All you can do is keep trying an it will work eventually.
