I’m currently experiencing constant lag. I ran Traceroute and here is my result. Anyone know what’s happening here?

I tried doing two things about this issue:

1) I played multiple online games and NO LAG whatsoever.

2) I contacted my internet service provider and they assured that my internet was running smoothly.

The only conclusion I could come to is that something’s wrong with this game. I hope a dev or someone can help me out with this before I shelve the game.

I’m having the same latency issues you are having. Also on the qwest(Centurylink) Network (out of Duluth). Only thing is, I haven’t been playing Guild Wars 2. It’s happening in Wildstar, whose servers also happen to be in Texas. It seems any traffic being routed to Dallas/Houston is lagging horribly with massive packet loss. My issues are also happening at 0.xe-10-3-0.BR1.CHI13.ALTER.NET. Wildstar has told me the problem is out of their hands. Centurylink has told me the problem is out of their hands. Who takes care of routing issues?

Yeah, I’m in the same boat, I lose no packets going to their servers. All losses (and lots of them) coming (or not) back from their servers, they tried to tell me otherwise more than once even after I had the same issue on two different high end gaming systems and on two different types of ISP, still my fault………. ah, you too were going through TX servers Terrowin, interesting….. I have found threads dedicated to just how kittenty their TX servers are alone, they lose so much data there, pure crap, but you ask any ANet tech they will tell you it’s on your end even with ping data in hand.

And now the biggest kicker of all (and I mean right in the face), now that they have went to mega servers, I now get routed from mid MO in the states all the way to Europe and back to play, I mean, really?! Anet you’re the best!……..at causing me all kinds of grief…

This is the only game I ever lag in. Always been. Sometimes it works wonderful with no lag for a few hours and other times the lag is horrendous. I showed Centurylink the data I got from Traceroute but they insist that my internet’s working perfectly fine after running a few tests. I even checked with multiple internet speed websites and my internet looks good.

However, I think I pretty much confirmed this is on Arenet’s end. I had another buddy who lives around the same area try GW2 and yep, he was complaining about the lag. Will be shelving GW2 until they fix their servers.

Unfortunately, it is not the game servers. It is, in fact, the way our internet is routed to their servers. ALTER.NET is a data center that our internet gets routed through to reach ArenaNet servers. The problem is with the data center, which used to be MCI owned, but has since been bought up by Verizon.

A couple explanations: our internet is being throttled by these data centers, or CenturyLink hasn’t paid for enough bandwidth in their lease to use these data centers, or the data centers’ equipment can’t handle the load.

But we are not alone. There are the same issues with other data centers. Level3.net and att.net data centers are also lagging…which leads me to believe these data centers are throttling. It would be a weird coincidence if all of these centers couldn’t handle the load – All 3 different ISP’s….or it’s also possible there is 1 dirty fiber connector somewhere also….who the **** knows.

Forgot to mention…the reason you are not lagging in other games, is because you are using different data centers to reach that other game. Both Wildstar and Guild Wars 2 lag for me, because I use the same data center to get to both game servers. But other games I play run flawlessly.

+1 for me, centurylink customer
I end up going through chicago where it goes centurytel→qwest→alter.net. It seems like something is going majorly wrong between centurytel→qwest.

I’ve always had issues and if I had another option I would take it, but things have just gotten noticeably worse in the last few weeks. I sent an email to centurylink tonight after I gave up trying to wvw.

If your internet’s running good, besides in GW2, centurylink will most likely tell you that nothing seems wrong with your internet. They won’t send anyone out to look at it without charging you a high fee unless you have some evidence that it’s on their end. I’ve talked with multiple representatives there about my lag in GW2 and they all insist that my internet’s fine. All we got now is to hear back from Arenet.

As someone pointed out, there seems to be a nasty relationship between centurylink users and Arenet. Some of the folks I know who complains about the lag in GW2 are generally with centurylink. This is something that we can’t do much about but let Arenet know and hope for the best, unless they too, insist that the problem’s not on their end. At that point, might as well hit the uninstall button and tell centurylink users to stay away from this game.

Also, where in the world is all of the devs in this forum? Do they not care? I’m not seeing them reply to any of the folks who need help here.

UPDATE

I contacted CenturyLink once again, since Arenet doesn’t seem to bother with this issue. They told me they weren’t the ones responsible for the ALTER.NET servers. Now they’re making me, the customer, directly contact the people in charge of ALTER.NET. Pretty frustrating.

I’m also a centurylink customer getting very high ping lately in gw2, out of st. paul / MN. I was also told everything was fine from their end. Looks like ALTER.NET has had this crap going off and on quite frequently over the past several months.

I am having the same issues. Century link from Minneapolis which is being routed through ALTER.NET which is where the latency goes from 21ms to 150+ms.

Any of the devs care to help with this issue?!

Obviously there is a problem here.

I fixed my issue. The solution is port forwarding. Just google “port forward guild wars 2” and then the model of your router and you should find a step-by-step guide of how to do it. You need to assign yourself a static IP address and then forward ports 80, 443, 6112, and 6600 and you should be good to go. Again, my ISP is Centurylink and this solved the lag issue for me.

THANK YOU STEVEN. So far, this has also solved my lag. I’m greatly disappointed that none of the people whom I paid are incapable of helping me resolve this. It was truly a frustrating process. Again, I appreciate your help.

Actually it looks like alter.net cleared up a lot in the last day or two, the forwarding is coincidental. I’m still getting a little loss at chp-brdr-03.inet.qwest.net

Not sure if it was just a coincidence or not but minutes before I did the rerouting process, I was getting pretty bad lag. Right after the process finished, the lag reduced dramatically. Of course I still get small spikes here and there but it surely beats what ALTER.NET did to me previously. Even if the data server is better now, who knows when the issue will return.

Still getting lag after forwarding ports. Sometimes the ping is fine, then I switch a map and the ping shoots up to 250. I give up, I don’t know what to do anymore…
