Hi Guys/Gals

Can someone from ANET or a techy confirm this?

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/FPS-TIP-Quickly-increase-your-FPS-on-multicore-CPU

P.S.: is there a performance gain with windows 7?

Thanks,
Golo

Don’t think core parking is an issue with GW2. It runs full throttle.

What are you comparing windows 7 to? WinXP?

WinXP bit faster than Win7 in terms of DX9 games, but it doesn’t support DX10/11.
In general, overall Win7 is a better OS, I recommend upgrading if you are still on XP.

Bassicaly what Kirito said.

Core parking shouldnt be an issue if you have a CPU that is strong enough to play GW2 in the first place.. it may help a little with older weaker cpu’s but in general it wont help much. I still have my core parking active.

Windows 7 64bit is brtter than XP overall. You may notice a slight dip in performance on some DX9 games ..but nothing significant. Overall i sugest going Windows 7.

Dont try windows 8 yet. its still to new and there are games that are running slower or not working well (bugs) at all with windows 8 atm. All other games see negligable or next to 0 improvment..so imo Windows 8 isnt worth putting up wth the horrible UI for 0 performance gains.

Core parking can have an impact on some games for some odd reason. I’d like to recommend this little gem, truly state of the art for keeping your system running to the best of its ability:

I googled this and people are saying they are seeing more smoothness and less stuttering in BF3.

Yep,def works, have core parking disabled since win 7 launch actually.Haven’t tested the diff for gw2 honestly but i always have corepark disabled without negative side effects, and like someone else stated in some games you can really tell theres less micro stuttering involved.

GW2 runs full throttle?

Check the screenshot and see for yourself how ‘full throttle’ it’s running for my 4.5ghz oc’d sandy bridge … Note the parked cores and several not being used while at the same time the gfx card is 30% under-utilized…

I was face-palming until I saw the core parking thread. now I have to wait out the shatterer again to see if it has an impact.

GW2 is runnig full throtle, however you needo t understand how GW2’s threads work to understand why Kirito is correct.

Bassicaly GW2 uses up to about 50 different threads to run. Of those about 3 are heavily used for performance. When any of those 3 threads hit the wall on how fast they can be procesed by your processor, the game will start slowing down. However becouse this is only 1 thread maxing out.. and your cpu which can handle 4 or 8 or even 12 threads alltogether (depending on the cpu) it will never show 100% usuage. Ontop of that most inbuilt Windows performance monitors will show said thread being spread out amonst the cores due ot the way it will move other processes and threads around to even out the load.

GW2 will only ever use around 4 threads being shown on ur monitors. Which means if you have a 4 core and 8 threads, 4 out of the 8 grpahs will show higher (but not necciserily max) usuage than the rest.

Overall a 8 thread cpu should expect ‘around’ 37% usuage when fps starts to drop ontop what ever other processes you have running.

only 4 threads in the age of multi-core with hyperthreading is rather bad. There should be the option to bump it to 8 or even 16.

‘should’ be ..but isnt.

reason being is that alot of processes have to be run on the same thread so that timings and other coding are kept together.
When you try to split a thread you potential create more problems.
Its hard but not impossible. I just think that Anet really dont want to have to put in the required effort and tme (money) to recode and possibly even rebuild parts of their game engine so that they can split the high performance threads up into smaller threads to increase performance.

This game loads the cores it does use enough for core parking to be of almost zero benefit for the majority of users.

it may benefit AMD FX owners who aren’t running Windows 7 SP1 + bulldozer hotfixes.

its not really necessary, when you hit restore power profile defaults it resets the parking changes as well.
