Recently formatted my computer and have just got around to reinstalling Guild Wars 2. I was able to download most of the game files fine, but for some reason, there are 19 files it won’t download and gives me the error message “Download failed! Please check your internet connection and try again. (2)”
I’ve already tried most of the suggestions Google gave me. Disabling the firewall, adding exceptions to the firewall, disabling my antivirus (I was using AVG, but switched to avast!) uninstalling my antivirus, flushing the dns, running as an administrator, etc. The problem is definitely my computer, because two other people in my household play GW2 and they’re able to update and play the game with no issues. (Both of them use AVG)
None of it has worked, and I’m out of ideas, so here I am.
I disabled all non-Microsoft services and all startup programs then ran Game Advisor. I’m not going to pretend to be an expert, but when skimming through the logs, all of the traceroutes seem to get stuck at 64.25.32.82, which I believe is where the problem lies. I tried pinging it via websites like isitup.org and on other computers and receive no response. But I suppose a more knowledgeable person can read the logs and find out what’s really wrong.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your time. Hope to be back in game soon.

Hi Cetol,
I would like for you to try a Winsock reset. To do so, please follow the steps below:
1. Click the “Start” button to bring up the Start Menu.
2. Type in CMD into the “Search programs and files” field but do not hit enter. Doing this will change your start menu to show the program “cmd.exe.”
3. Right-click on “cmd.exe” and select “Run as Administrator.”
4. Type “netsh winsock show catalog >C:\LSP.txt” without the quotes. This will save a file to the root of your C drive called LSP.txt. You do not need to do anything with this file.
5. Once complete, type “netsh winsock reset” without the quotes. When the command is completed successfully, a confirmation appears, followed by a new command prompt line.
Once completed, please try connecting again.

Hello Ashley,
This did not seem to fix the issue. If it helps any, the downloader gets to about 9mb before giving me the error message.

Hey Cetol – Since that didn’t resolve the issue for you, I would like for you to try disabling your User Account Control since I noticed you have it enabled. To disable UAC as a temporary troubleshooting step, please try the steps below:
1. Click on the Windows Start button.
2. In the search box type ‘UAC’.
3. Click on ‘Change User Account Control Settings’.
4. Move the slider down to ‘Never Notify’
5. Click the “OK” button.
6. You will then be prompted to reboot your computer. Please reboot your computer at this time.

Hello Ashley,
Nope, same issue, still getting download failed. Would log files generated via the -log argument help? I do have one of those containing quite a few errors.

Hey, I’m getting the same issue with being unable to connect to the IP range 64.25.32.**
My client hangs at 0KB downloaded before it hits the actual login screen.
I have done the following to try to resolve this:
-Uninstalled AVG completely (as I was told AVG doesn’t play nicely with GW2)
-Running the game with my PC directly connected to my modem (bypassing my router) with all firewalls turned off, in DMZ mode.
-Manually opening all ports and running the game.
(I do have a current ticket open with support (many thanks to both Luis and James for working with me on this issue,) but I thought I’d let you know that you’re not the only one with this issue.)

I’m having the same exact issue as OP.
I got to about 90% download, and my internet went out (my school uses Cisco and the client sucks so I do 90min access at a time).
Signed in again for another 90 minutes and the stupid gw2 client keeps giving me the “download failed!…(2)” crap.
I’ve tried Windows run, disabling anti-virus, turning off windows defender…everything I can think of…
Gonna watch the thread, I’ll update if I figure this out. Good luck! lol

Hi Cetol – I want to rule out your actual internet vs your computer. There is a service called WTFast, https://www.wtfast.com/ its a proxy that should allow you to get those last files downloaded, they offer a free trial so if you would, try doing the download on that service and let me know if it goes through or not.

Hey Ashley,
I tried out WTFast, but I’m still getting the same error. I don’t think it’s my internet, because like I said before, two other people in my household are able to download the updates with no issues whatsoever.

I’m having the exact same issue, 19 files to go..get into the download about 8meg or so and it stops with download failed.

I had issues even starting the download and install, once i got over that issue i had issues finishing it.. it took forever but it was some security software blocking me. I ended up uninstalling my anti virus for install as i was desperate and it worked. I am not technologically adept so i couldn’t get the firewall to allow no matter how many steps and so on…it kept blocking form the background even with it shut off and set as admin.

Just tried this solution, and the winsock reset solution. both failed to fix it.
Also tried installing on another PC in my house, same issue.
19 files to go and it fails.

Ok disabled firewall and antivirus software. same thing. 19 files remaining, downloads a few megs then fails.
The thing is this, if I can download like 170,000+ files through the patcher and the last 19 fail consistently; then isn’t there something up with the patcher? Why would 19 files exist in some other state than the other 170,000+ files?

Well, I’ve found a workaround. I’d rather have fixed the problem, but at least I can play now.
I managed to download the last 19 files through a VPN. I used Spotflux (Google it) which is a pretty simple, straightforward, free VPN. If you want to try this, just download Spotflux from their website, install it, turn it on (It’s a big green “Enable” button on the main interface) and once it says it’s on, try to update GW2 again. After that’s finished, make sure to turn off the VPN by opening Spotflux and pressing the disable button.
See you guys in game.

Hi Cetol – Glad to see you found a fix. We try not to suggest a VPN to players if we don’t have to but I’m happy to see that this worked out for you as I have seen this resolve the issue for other players as well.

What kind of connection are you on? (home, university, public, wireless/wired) It’s possible there is a firewall blocking your download on the hardware, also, if you run any antivirus programs, make sure those are temporarily disabled or be certain to add exceptions for gw2. I’ve seen others run the app on port 80 to help sometimes too (search around for those instructions)
If you just can’t get it, check the sticky for submitting a ticket and have at it. Post your fix back here

After attempting to fix the problem using the methods listed above and some of my own, it seems to me like the source of my problem is a corrupt file within the vast 15g file that GW2 uses. To get it to update through those last few files, I had to continually reopen my updater making bits of progress. When I finally got into the game, some things didn’t appear correctly, rather, there was a purple and white square that took their place. To remedy this I’ve decided just to reinstall the whole game. Will post again if it fixes my issues.

disabling AVG didn’t help me at all, but i found that if I lowered my CPU clock speed (i had it overclocked) back to the original and I restarted my computer it worked completely fine.

Good info.
Overclocks can cause some strange issues – even if the overclock appears to be completely stable.
For the others having this problem, you could also try a TCP/IP stack reset:

Life Saver. for me it was the last file and i managed always around 570 to 620 MB before i got the no connection error. with the mentioned VPN i could finaly do it. (and easy to use too)

Hi Cetol,
I would like for you to try a Winsock reset.
This guide worked for me. Thanks a lot!
