i don’t know what to think about it.. when i left the Mad King dungeon, the FOV became zoomed way out all throughout the game and it was perfect… a little while later, i noticed that it’s back to being very narrow/restricted/suffocating.. if the current condition of it is how you’re thinking of making it, i think you have some more work to do.. the zoom inside the Mad King dungeon was perfect.

ive tried this 3 times so far….the client immediately crashes after launcher disappears to char select screen. when i try to rerun gw2 after the crash it hangs at ‘Downloading 0kb’ on the launcher. no progression at all. i have to reboot inorder to get it to progress. and i have to remove the -testVerticalFov in order to actually play.

Good improvement, but horizontal is what hurts the most. We really need a slider up to 90 degrees.

I love the new field of view. That was always one of my complaints. I felt like I needed to increase my distance from my character some and there was no option to allow this. The new field of view is awesome. You should put a slider in the game to allow players to adjust it. Thanks for all your great work!

Testing for a few days now, and like many players here I appreciate the change.
I’d modify or add a few things to make this cam improvement perfect to my taste :
– more zoom out (mad king bug <3)
– first person view
– a slider that would modify the cam vertical position (like the horizontal one… that would help see something as a norn when cam is near)
Another thing I’d like to be able to modify is the HUD, something between the actual possibilities and what we could do in the 1st GW.

I’ve had this option enabled for some time now and it’s been a very positive experience compared to the way it was before. The vertical FoV still feels weird though and I think this is affected by the fact that the camera is just so low to the ground for all races, except the charr and norn.
I really hope they’ll consider giving us some way to adjust the vertical camera pivot (height), similarly to the way we can adjust the horizontal. IMHO, that would go a long way in making things feel right from a frontal point-of-view.
Right now, it feels like the increased FoV is just giving me more ground to look at, and looking forwards and upwards is challenging because of the lowness of the camera and the way it collides with the ground.

FOV realy helps under water… You have to do this for Under water it will be more fun!!! Cuz right now under-water is not fun with small FOV + slow movemend it just sucks.

Love the FOV testing, the only issue is at certain angles in Cursed Shore only, usually when the camera would be under the bridge near Shelter’s Gate, my system with completely freeze up. As in completely lock up and force me to reset.
That being said, I disabled all my OC’s, dropped everything to stock and it still occurred. Removing the -testVerticalFov fixed it. So it isn’t hardware related.. or so I’d think.
i7 3770k, Sabertooth Z77 and a GTX 580. Those are probably the most relevant specs if anything.
Cheers

Camera for the Asura characters is still unsatisfactory.
EDIT: Character is in the middle of the screen; ie too high up. Feels like I am playing with a visor obscuring the top part of my view.

I posted a couple of days ago about my experience with this change (regarding the positive effect it had on my motion sickness while playing). Unfortunately I jumped the gun a little with my enthusiasm. After playing a lot more over the last couple of days, I still have to resort to playing in windowed mode with the vertical plane reduced to about 80% before my troubles go away. This is with the fov change enabled. So in the end, I have to agree with a lot of the other comments on here, and say that it would be extremely nice if there would be some sort of slider, with a considerably greater maximum fov.

Now that it seems like it’s forced in the 11/15 release, is there a switch so we can see the game the way it looked ‘before’ this?
It looks awful now for me. Position 2 of zooming is too far away for my tastes (and I tested this switch when it was announced and immediately removed it because I didn’t like it. Had I known it was going to be forced on us with no way to undo it, I would have made a big stink).

You should ask for a refund, I hear arenanet are getting quite fast at processing them.

Forgot to come update this one. Turns out we can use -useOldFoV to force it back to the old way, which works perfect.
Hopefully they either never remove that, or give us far less movement per mouse wheel roll when zooming (smaller camera movements), and far more positions than only 6.
If any of you have TSW, roll your mouse wheel one click and see how little the camera moves. Allows you to really fine tune the distance.

A good improvement. Immediately noticed the difference today, though I couldn’t place my finger on why exactly the game looked better till I realized the FOV was changed. It’s also appreciated you guys kept the option in for those who dislike it to remain with the old FOV.

It’s a good improvement in overall, but terribly flawed for the time being.. The camera angles are totally messed up and too far now.. I personally liked the old FoV better, and i’m glad i still have the -useOldFOV feature, otherwise, my entire character roster becomes unplayable..
I’m totally behind what notebene mentions, we need more options to tune the distance as we see fit, so everybody will be satisfied.. People who prefer to keep their character close to their screen, and also people who play with “midgets” with the character maxed out in terms of zooming..
Edit : As far as i’m concerned, Human and Sylvari FoV was alright.. I’m definitely sure you’re heading towards the right direction here, but keep in mind that many players want to see their character in front of their screen, and not “further deep” into the world..

I add my “ideal” distance for my character here (i used a nearby column to get that close..) Too close? I think not!

This is definitely an improvement over the default view for me using a Dell 24-inch Ultrasharp monitor. I would also like to add a request for a new viewing idea of using a separate second monitor just for in-game windows. Perhaps have the background be simply a parchment image and then I could place my inventory, chat, trading post, etc. windows over on the second monitor full time. What this feature would really be nice for is having your map up full time while you still can see everything on your main monitor. Just an idea not sure how hard implementation would be.

I totally agree as i am also gaming on 2 screens.

Totally agree! When playing an asura (and even humans and sylvari), and especially if you play ranged, it feels like the frontal action is either happening underneath UI that shows the enemy portrait, healthbar and buffs, or its happening near or off-screen – very uncomfortable.
I made quite a detailed post about this over here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Adjustable-Camera-Pivot-Height/first#post803645
Screenie attached: Just look at all the wasted space behind my character – human, in this example. The action is so high up, you feel slightly impaired. The increased FoV helps a lot, but there are other issues that goes hand-in-hand with a good FoV, like the height of the camera’s pivot (especially when zoomed more inwards), and the position of your character when zoomed out.

i have been trying this fov setting for like 14 days now but it is very unstable for me it keeps crashing my GW2.exe (ive send the logs) but the fov setting certainly improves gameplay for me because of this i dont have headaches anymore when playing your game..

Should close this thread!
This new FOV is live already if you guys haven’t notice from the last patch note etc. if you keep using this function, either it won’t do anything now or you’re creating bugs.

They need to make it where I can zoom all the way into first person. Would help out tremendously in tight spaces.

I can verify. Look at the thread named “Game Update Notes – November 15th, 2012” under the News and Announcements section. The second post in that forum by EvanTeicheira shows that they moved the game over to the new FOV (last bullet point). Rejoice!

I absolutely loved this, I didnt actually realise that I needed until I tried it out! I always thought my character looked a bit too central in the screen, so I couldn’t see much else.
I play on a 40" samsung screen in my living room, and its made a small but incredibly useful difference in the way I play.
Like many others, i would LOVE a first person option like GW1, so I feel like I can really immerse myself in the game and the amazing landscapes, but for now this is wonderful, and I have no complaints

It’s a step in the right direction, but i think a customizable FOV is a must for PC games given the wide varieties of monitors, playing habits and personal preferences. It’s a rather easy to implement thing and there’s no real excuse for not having it. E.g. personally I can’t play any FPS games with FOV set at less than 95, it gives me serious headaches.
squashing the GW2 window to a 16:5 ratio gives me approximately what i would like to have set as FOV ideally

It looks much better. I like the ability to look all the way up. One thing I would like is the ability to enter first person mode like in GW1 in order to see things in front of me for screen shots though!
i as well would like First Person Mode. the 1st game u could scroll all the way in, i miss that.

Thank god I found this option. Playing on a 24" Widescreen monitor was giving me motion sickness. I’ve always thought it odd that people could get motion sickness based on FoV in the sense that I didn’t understand how it could happen, thanks to GW2 I now know.
The “beta” has completely sorted the motion sickness issue, I can now play without feeling sick. Now then…time to see if I can tone down the particle effects so that I’m not blind after an hour of play without makin the game look like crap…

Yes. The effect “-testVerticalFov” had before, is now built into the game as default. So adding this command line flag does not have any effect anymore. In order to restore the old FoV like it was before the change, use “-useOldFov”. Anyone can verify this easily via screenshots, or check the old patch notes in the news and announcements forum (the search box works well).

Brassnautilus,
I just saw your images from about a month ago – how do you get that superwide FOV? wow, that is incredible and more like where I put my settings in other games. That is the one thing I HATE about GW2 – the FOV is sooo close to my character’s back, esp in WvW or spvp, I feel like I am blind.
Anyone else have a suggestion on how to improve FOV? I see lots of youtube videos and my FOV is about 50% as far as most of the videos I see.

The “new FoV” is now the default FoV. Been that was for months.
This is an old thread really needs to be unstickied…

They still need to add a slider, or widen it further, Anet can defend the “immersion” or whatever stance all they like, but the option SHOULD be there!
And I already know the game can auto-compensate for FoV on the fly
All you have to do is run in windowed and shrink the window vertically and it instantly changes the FoV
