1 screen is default 75° h-FOV (47° v-FOV)
2 screen is beta test 85° h-FOV (55° v-FOV)
3 screen is “comfortable” 90° h-FOV (59° v-FOV)my 2c
nineti pls.
Seriously though, when I was in-game I BARELY noticed the improvement when using the beta vFoV. I’m not sure if my game isn’t producing the effect correctly but I was only able to definitively distinguish the screenshots when I put them side by side.
With all these extremely positive posts, some of which come close to, e.g. “Thanks Anet this is the best thing that ever happened to the world!”. It makes me think there is some kind of placebo effect going on. I mean really? I couldn’t even tell the difference when in-game, yet you guys think this is a huge improvement?
I’m not trying to attack people here, I’m trying to attack the issue: I felt no more comfortable with the new FoV (or at least I didn’t realise it was more comfortable, I only played for about 15 mins) than the default. I would like it to be increased, to see if it starts to feel great at about 90 like the quote suggests.
I also still don’t see how people are distinguishing between ‘zooming out’ and ‘increased FoV’. I provide two images: one with and one without the FoV change, it is clearly a very similar image, it just looks like the edges have been cropped from one, as though the camera has simply moved towards the character a short distance.

I’m free!!! -inhales new, fresh, FoV-
Upon further investigation and comparing, I noticed an FPS drop of 0.

I couldn’t really see the difference but it made running around in Lions Arch way more comfortable, less claustrophobic for me
we still need a slider though

2 screen is beta test 85° h-FOV (55° v-FOV)
3 screen is “comfortable” 90° h-FOV (59° v-FOV)my 2c

Here’s a little comparison for with regards to zoomed out distance between new and old. Top pic is the default FoV with a 1 click zoom out (from fully zoomed in), middle pic is fully zoomed in on the new FoV and bottom pic is the new FoV with a 1 click zoom out (to match the top pic).
As you can see, all though the new FoV is closer to my character you can clearly see more of the sides and top (between top and middle pic), and on the botttom pic you can clearly see more of the sides, top and bottom.

In some of my previous posts I argued that there is no distinction between ‘zooming out’ and this change. I decided to test this out by taking a screenshot in each mode with my camera in the same position (zoomed-in one ‘notch’ in the ‘changed’ client).
In comparing these two images you can clearly see the effect that the Vertical FoV change has on the game. Contrary to information from posts of others, the horizontal viewable area doesn’t change. I can of course zoom-out one more ‘notch’ in the client with the beta change enabled, and I can see more in the horizontal direction- but this is zooming out. not an increased hFoV.
This vFoV change hardly does anything, I hope you have fixed whatever bug you were trying to fix, but I would really like to see more horizontally.
(in the second image, the sylvari on the right seems to lose his clothes! wtf!?)

You don’t see the extra horizontal in those pics because of the close range pillars, look at my post above yours (check the top and bottom pics) – at long distance (and middle distance) you can actully see more horizontal despite them both having the exact same zoom position.

with my camera in the same position (zoomed-in one ‘notch’ in the ‘changed’ client).
That’s your problem right there. The camera has to have the same position if you want to compare the FoV. Also, you can’t zoom out (= move your camera) one more “notch” with the FoV beta.
What you did is widening the FoV (by activating the FoV beta) while simultaneously zooming in (= moving your camera) so that your character has the same height on your screen. This is a well-known special effect in movies known as the “dolly zoom”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolly_zoom
Here is a gif demonstrating the effect:

Firstly, surely I would see more round the sides of the pillars, if the FoV was increased?
Secondly, I believe all three of your images have (at least) slightly different zoom distances.
Finally, I really don’t understand steffan’s image. Why is he comparing his 1080p image to a 1580×889? Of course a 1080p image should have a greater FoV, as the screen is generally larger.

That’s your problem right there.
What do you mean that’s my problem? Surely this is the best way to illustrate the effect of the FoV change?
That gif is awesome!

What do you mean that’s my problem?
That you did not use the same camera position in your comparison.

Thirdly I really don’t understand steffan’s image. Why is he comparing his 1080p image to a 1580×889? Of course a 1080p image should have a greater FoV, as the screen is generally larger.
The image is scaled down to overlay the geometry composition on the larger FoV image, so you can compare the gain visually.
Simple as that… wasn’t too much.
Like i did with these (cam distance, orientation and position are always the same)
And yet i don’t understand why starting from a 1:1 square screen they are cutting vFoV(and thus hFoV along) when the screen goes wider in AR :/
Why don’t you keep it constant and modulate only hFoV?
At least on a single screen setup.

Is it supposed to work in windowed mode too? I’m not noticing any difference but I’m not sure if it’s because it only works in full screen or if I’m just not being observant enough.

Just tested the new FoV.
Its better than before, but it needs to be much better!
According to Arenanet the FoV was 75 before.
Now it should be 85, but its not, its 75, so before it was 65.
I added 3 Screenies to show the huge difference.
The first one shows the old FoV.
Second one shows the new FoV.
The third one is forced to FoV 90…
You can see for yourself how its “breaking” the Art in GW2, like Anet says…
A FoV 85 or 90 minimum would be good as a universal FoV.
It would be much better to add a slider to have the choice betwee, lets say 75-90 FoV (just like it is in HalfLife 2 nowadays, dear Anet;)) and a lot of Players will be pleased, even myself:P

I noticed something now, though. Try looking directly down to the ground, you get a strong drop in FPS when you do this while running this FOV option.
Seems strange since the culling system would normally cull things not looked at, and looking to the ground would result in higher FPS, but with this enabled, the FPS drops dramaticly.
FPS is fine when looking any other direction.
Another issue: With this enabled, terrain reflections in the water are messed up, edges of terrain that touch the water do not connect with their reflections, and leave ‘gaps’.

I thought it wouldn’t work well with a 16:10 resolution, but it did improve it.
Would definitely like to see a slider though.
As for the people complaining about performance loss.. duh!, you’re increasing what’s rendering on the screen, there’s no way to avoid performance loss from that.

I turned this on just to see what the difference, not someone who was terribly unhappy with the situation before hand but I still wanted to give it a shot.
I can’t believe I’m even playing the same game any more! This is amazing. Everything, every single thing looks better.
This is fantastic and I love it. I never knew how much FoV affected your view of a game.

At first I didn’t seem to notice a difference since i was in an area I hadn’t been before, but as I entered the eastern (the snowy part of) Gendarran, where I used to do dailies, I immediately noticed it was different- so much more open.
Thank you guys, thank you

It’s great. I was running across Gendarran and suddenly realized I was seeing the moon at the top of my screen. Now I’ll have to head back to Orr and try looking up again when the dragon shadows fall across me. Really looking forward to this being permanent. Thank you.

Hmm…I love the way it makes the Grove seem less claustrophobic!
But to my eyes, it makes Rata Sum and Hoelbrak look somehow ‘stretched.’
And I also get the impression that characters’ proportions are being distorted a little.
But I have no problem with it, as long as you make it optional and allow us to keep playing in the ‘classic’ FOV if we wish.

Oh wow this is VASTLY imroved.
I’ve only tested it out for a minute and can already see the difference. Gone are the FOV headaches, time to really enjoy the scenery!
Here’s a before after on my end. Is only a quick comparison.
As a sidenote I usually prefer a FOV of between 90 and 100, it’s still fairly narrow for my taste but it’s definatly no longer claustrophibaclly small.

Perfect. TY.
1) The game doesn’t feel claustrophobic any more.
2) When I die and I’m waiting to be rez’ed, the DAM camera spins (which I friggan H~A~T~E). With the crappy FOV, the spinning camera would make me feeI queasy. I had to constantly keep moving the mouse to stop the STUPID camera from spinning (I’m dead Anet… I don’t need you to make me feel “helpless”). With the new FOV, the spinning camera doesn’t make me feel queasy any more (but the spinning camera still sucks monkey kittens).

Thanks for letting us zoom farther, it’s still valuable, although this is not really a complete fix, as many have said.
First of all, please make GW2 a HOR+ game! The concept of HOR+ FoV scaling should be really understood by everyone here, so that everyone knows the techical term for what they really are asking:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_of_view_in_video_games
http://www.wsgf.org/category/screen-change/hor
Again, please make GW2 a HOR+ FoV scaling game!!!

Nice FOV but visual glitched / BUGGED! As Anet stated, it causes visual glitched.
The water reflection is bugged out when I use the FOV test.
Screen 1 = Without FOV Test.
Screen 2 = With FOV Test.
Screen 3 = With FOV Test.

I totally love the change. I end up playing in 4:3 windowed mode ’cos I feel that I lack vision on the top to see the details.
I’m really glad with the change and this should be totally be the ‘standar’ for the players instead the old one. ^^

I just tried this out. In some situations, it’s definitely better and on the right track. However, I got a little motion sickness from it. Let me explain…
I was playing in Sparkfly Fen at a DE near Aleem’s Waypoint. It’s preventing undead from opening up a tomb. Most of the fight, I was standing on the steps leading up to the tomb.
I got motion sickness because as I would rotate the camera around 360 degrees (the undead would spawn from all directions) the camera would snap closer to my character and a lower FoV instantly due to the normal camera issues when there’s uneven terrain or something “behind” the camera.
Because the FoV is now larger when the camera is behaving normally, when the camera would snap back and forth between the smaller “messed up camera” FoV and then this new much larger FoV, it’s a significantly larger zoom in/out that’s happening immediately. And based on how I was moving the camera around, it could happen several times back and forth within just a few seconds.
I’ve never noticeably had that specific issue cause motion sickness before, but I only played with the new FoV for the duration of that one DE and then logged. In those short 5 minutes, I got a little queasy.
