Freezing/crashing
I have the same problem since 15/11, but none of the Mods or Tech guys seem to care about it.
They care about the event , and new updates, but not how to fix problems caused by corrupt patches.
I really tried anything, nothing helps on that problem.
Hi Ebon – Would you mind posting your ticket number to the thread so that I can take a look?
Hi! Thanks for the reply.
#121116-000820
Not a problem! Taking a look at your ticket now.
Ebon can you write here again if you got a solution for this?
Because your problem is exactly the same as mine. ^^
Having the same issue here, and have had it for a long while. Game is basically unplayable at the moment. Tried everything Ebon did, even swapping out to another hard drive to install GW2 on, but with no luck. Post a fix if you get one, please!
My issues began with the patch last week.
If there’s a resolution I’ll be sure to share. Sorry you guys are having trouble too!
From what I can see this does appear to be a solitary issue. Not to place the blame on your system, but there is any number of variables that could be contributing to crashes such as this and our job in Technical Support is to eliminate all possible variables in order to come to a resolution and then escalate the issue to another department if necessary. While many players may also be experiencing crash issues, the individual system setups and errors found in the crash report, along with the exact point and type of crash that occurs can make two issues that look similar at first actually turn out to be incredibly different.
That being said, I like to rule out the basics. I did not see anywhere that you had tried a repair. I would recommend first browsing to Documents\Guild Wars 2 and deleting your local.dat file. Once you’ve done that, run a repair on the game client.
Should this not resolve the issue for you, I’d like for you to try updating your DirectX. The game client requires the latest DirectX 9 components; this is true even if you have DirectX 10 or higher already installed. Please follow the instructions at Microsoft’s web site to install the newest DirectX 9 update:
Please be sure to save the file to your Windows desktop. Then create a new folder on the desktop and extract the DirectX files into it. Once they have been extracted open the new folder and use the DXsetup file to install DirectX.
Let me know if this helps!
Thank you so much for your reply! I’ll give this a whirl and report back.
Yay, ok. I’ve been in game for about 30 minutes now without being dropped. I followed your instructions and I also flushed my dns.
Now that I’m in game though, my character is rubber banding around. Is the lag from my end, or?
Edit:
Spoke too soon. Froze again :[

I crashed after about 2 minutes , and I followed every step aswell.
Dear ANet,
I’ve been experiencing some serious crashing over the past few weeks. During play the screen will suddenly flicker and then be replaced by a blue/green/purple screen with vertical lines. There is nothing I can do to control the game when this happens. It would tend to stay like this for about 30 seconds and then it sometimes corrected itself. But 80% of the time it would change to a different colour and then crash – I can’t even CTRL-ALT-DEL most of the time this happens. The one time CTRL-ALT-DEL did work I saw a Guild Wars message saying that my graphics card had crashed.
It’s been a real pain but manageable until yesterday when I couldn’t finish the event as the game crashed constantly, and today when it crashed when I was in Fractals, meaning I couldn’t get back in – annoying! This DOES NOT happen with any other of my games. I did a repair tonight but it hasn’t worked.
I have attached the information contained within my GW2 documents folder. Any advice gratefully received!

Hey Ebon and everyone else experiencing this issue,
I had the same problems this very morning: within a few minutes of gameplay the game would freeze, the monitor would go black, I would still hear game sound for a few seconds, then the game crashed. I was able to pinpoint the issue down to Windows 7 attempting to install a new nvidia driver and constantly failing (look in your Windows Update logs to see if this is the case for you). Windows 7 update has a bit of a reputation of not installing drivers correctly at times, so I went to nvidia’s site, found my specific video card, and manually installed the driver from nvidia’s website. This worked perfectly, and the game now runs fine.
From the specs you posted, Ebon, I see you use the Geforce series (as do I) and are also running Windows 7. Please give this a shot if the problems persist. This goes for everyone else too.
Hope this helped!
I’ve had the game freeze on me twice in the past two days. Last night it froze while I was in FotM after playing the game for about 2 hours. Today, about an hour or so ago, it froze after playing for just about 30min. Both times I had to hard reset my system… I’ve been playing the game since launch and this is the first time this has happened (If memory serves, the game MAY have froze on me once before a month or so ago, but I’m not too sure). My specs as follows:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
AMD Phenom II X4 945 (4 CPUs)
ATI Radeon HD 5850 1GB GDDR5
4 GB RAM
Will play again in the next few days and see if problem persists…

Your problem did sound like a graphics issue, but ours is different.
Our game freezes, with sounds, and the only way to end the game is CRTL+ALT+DEL.
And that is from the very first second the last patch rolled in.
Weeks before, I never had a single crash.
Yeah, same problem for me. Since the patch on the 15th, my client crashes sporadically, regardless of my settings.
It made it extremely difficult to actually be able to do anything related to the event, because I would crash. Today, doing the Shatterer event, which normally takes about 5 minutes, I crashed 4 times. It’s a little ridiculous, it basically makes FoTM impossible to progress in, because I often crash before finishing a set of 3, and can’t rejoin.

Its happening to me too, i can play for a few minutes and then my game freezes and sound continues, I’m using a ATI 6870 with latest drivers and have tried the things people have said in this thread and still no luck
I am having the same issue as I have seen others report. Freezing and blackscreening. Havent had an issue at all in the past two months when I got GW2 and started playing till the last patch for the Lost Shores event. Once that started wham, things started happening. I run an AMD Radeon 7900 vid card. My comp is only 2 months old. No heat issues been checking for that and even at full fight only running at 75 C. I really like this game but right now unplayable as when blackscreen only way for me to get out is to shut comp off and reboot. I have tried all the fixes I could find that were posted, made sure vid card drivers were current, went into Catalyst and made sure it was updated and set properly. Just frustrated atm that cant play. Also all my other mmos like EQ are just fine with no issues at all.
I ran gw2 smoothly since prelaunch until the last week’s event update. What’s in that patch that’s causing the freeze/ crash ? I did whatever solution I could find here and still can’t play the game … please advise anet.
Hello,
I’ve moved today, and set up new internet. I’m still experiencing the crashing issue.
What else can I try in order to resolve this problem?

I had the Yellow/Green/Blue Vertical Lines, Freezing Screen with sound running in the back. But never once i need to restart my system. I am running the game in Windows Full Screen since i got 2 monitors. So i was able to close the client from Desktop and restart it again.
I was running on my old AMD system with 4GB ram and GTX 240 graphics card when the issue happen. So i bought a new gaming rig with the following specs.
Windows 7 32 bit Home Edition
Intel i7 – 3770k
Sabertooth z77 motherboard
16GB ram 1600 mhz
GTX660 SLI 2×2GB
Corsair H100 for cooling the processor.
Update every Single windows and graphics card drivers in this new gaming rig. Still that didn’t solve the problem. So i can be so sure to say, It’s not my PC’s problem. . It’s the problem with the ANet Client. I even tried Low Settings in game.
Posted a ticket 121120-001208 with the required Documents as mention in the Support page. I wasn’t expecting a fast reply since i posted yesterday. But looking at so many of you not getting reply. I guess i should post here to get some attention from the ANet Team.
And if anyone has already found a solution. Please share.

Picture 1, ready to steal Chief in a very close tournament game.
Picture 2, freeze.
Picture 3, black screen kick.
Not pictured, me raging. We lost that game, obviously, since they were 4v5 for a good 5 more minutes as I reloaded.
This is not good. Not good at all.
What is the address to write a letter to? Anyone?
I really appreciate the assistance provided by technical support, but the speed of resolution hasn’t met or exceeded my expectations as a customer.

I don’t mean to nit-pick, but isn’t it a little odd that many other players are experiencing crashing and/or freezing since the updates for the live event?

I have the same problems Freezing and Crashing of the game client since last patch, before the patch the game ran without any problems. I guess i`ll wait for a new patch and hope that one solves the issues… crashing/freezing every 5 minutes makes the game unplayable
edit: aparently going to Documents\Guild Wars 2 and deleting your local.dat file fixed my game. Many thanks for this AshleySegovia

I have 2 monitors so i was youtubing for music while gaming. Makes me wonder why my youtube is still running when my game got disconnected.

Well after reading a ton of posts, trying different things I did the delete of the Local.dat and thought wow that fixed the issue. After about 20 min of play freeze again though this time didnt black screen and it recovered. So not sure if fixed or not guess will have to play a bit more to see. And by the way before that last patch for Lost Shores 3rd phase event NEVER had a freeze issue, game played like a dream. So still thinking they did something that has caused an issue for alot of us.
Yeah its the same here. Before the patch i had nothing. But now i get the crash in like 5 – 20 minutes of playing the game. Mostly at WvW or in a Dungeon. And i readed a lot of forums to and changed a lot on my computer aswel but nothing works.
So its good to know that many people have it and that it isn’t a problem of my PC i guess? Hope they fix it in the next build / patch!
Greetings
Same issue. Only happens after I start GW2. I have a gtx580 and I’ve incrementally tried every driver including betas, going backwards till september with the same results. I only crashes AFTER I start GW2.exe. Directx is up to date. It’s not my pc, or my ram, or windows, or my video card, or defragging my hard drive, it’s gw2. It’s not an isolated issue, or my video settings, it’s the game. I haven’t installed any new apps for months. The only thing that gets installed are firefox updates, required windows updates, symantec updates, and gw2 updates. I have no video issues, and no computer issues for that matter, until I double-click GW2.exe. That is when my video crashes. Never before. It’s not a trojan, or a virus, or a worm, unless the trojan only wants to work only after I start gw2.exe. Really..really..really.. it’s not me.

Did a reformat on my computer, and a fresh install.. Still same issue. Anyone have any luck?
Guys i found a solution that worked for me, and i hope for you aswell so try this:
Go to start / docunuments / guildwars 2 and delete the local.dat file there.
This file saves your ingame settings and things like your password / username and stuff.
When you deleted this file, start the game and the game will automaticly make a new local.dat file again.
The settings in the game are now set back to normal / default. Try to play any part of the game where you get the error often. ( By me that was in WvW after 5 – 15 mins ).
Don’t change any of the ingame settings yet!
I played WvW for 1 hour yesterday evening and today again and it worked all fine. I got no errors and i can teleport to any world / waypoint without getting errors.
If you think its save to change some settings again then do this. But remember what you changed cuz one of the settings that you changed could give you the error again. So remember it so that you can set it back to normal again
I hope this workes for you aswell. It’s atleast worth trying cuz it don’t takes hours to try this
Greetings Rik
( BTW i don’t know if this works for the black screen error, but it worked for the frozen screen where you get this error messages)

Ebon I found a solution to my crashes and blackscreens. I turned down my fps from unlimited to 60 for some reason this seemed to fix my issues least for tonight. Played 3 hours without a hitch of any kind, no crashes, lag or blackscreen. On unlimited fps I was getting 133 top so at 60 it seems to work ok. Hopes this helps you also
I tried to throttle back the fps, but I’m still crashing :/
I haven’t had the error code after doing a DNS cache, but I just got the downed loading screen freezing. Note, I don’t think I’ve played enough (20 min total from cache) to see if it actually helped or not.
Scratch that, still having the issue. This was not a problem for a good 3 or 4 weeks and then it has been happening regularly. Not cool.
Maybe this will help you figure it out.

I didn’t give 54.99 euros for a game that crashes.why does it crashes? I have lowered the graphics (until lowest)But it still crashes. My pc: Processor=Intel core® core™2 Duo CPU 3.16 GHz / RAM=4,00 GB. I bought it yesterday and i can’t play. Please help i am about to kick my pc.
@Ebon:
Did you ever update your DirectX like Ashley suggested?
I did a quick google search and half a dozen games have crash reports with that version you have, it’s ancient. Lotr, wow, swtor, diablo3, civilization V etc…
When you have updated that, post a new crash log to see if we can rule out one odd thing at a time.
It looks like the game is trying to load game models and can’t because a memory area is full. Hopefully a bug in the 3D library…DirectX…microsoft product….wouldn’t suprise me if that was the probem
I’ve not seen two complaints in this thread that crashes because of the same cause btw…
Flux.. 8 days bouncing 2 -3 emails back and forth with tech support. I would be impressed and thankful if you were able to pin point the cause of this issue.

It’s really sad that ArenaNet keeps refusing to accept responsibility for all these disconnects and crashes, or even offer serious comments about them. I’ve had crashes and disconnects since the game was released, and I have a decent system without overclocking and up-to-date drivers for the 570 Ti video card. In fact, GW2 was the ONLY application installed along with a brand new copy of Windows 7 on the SSD when I first started playing the game.
The problems happen with the same regularity whether I have just “repaired” the GW2 install or not. They always happen under similar game conditions that require a lot of data transfer and real time coordination between the game engine and my computer … i.e., when traveling through a portal or when in a large group of other players, such as in a really large event or in a WvW zerg. The FPS does not significantly change, although the ability lag does sometimes increase in zergs. The game just locks up or kicks me back to the desktop.
The top five most obvious root causes for these crashes and disconnects are:
1. really poor handling of process race condition errors
2. really poor handling of process race condition errors
3. really poor handling of process race condition errors
4. really poor handling of process race condition errors
5. really poor handling of process race condition errors
I guarantee that ArenaNet knows this … they just won’t admit it and they apparently aren’t willing to fix enough of the code to make the problems go away. The fact that I have a fast SSD possibly exacerbates the problem, but it shouldn’t be there in the first place and we shouldn’t have to swap out hardware to tune for some combination of computer speed, internet latency, and game engine response time that minimizes the crashes. Some people are apparently lucky enough to have been in the sweet spot by default, but the rest of us are being screwed … we bought a game that doesn’t work.
This whole thing just sucks, and while I fully bought into the promise this game offered, the implementation is so bad that I am already ready to abandon it. If Elder Scrolls Online was released I’d be gone.

This is disgusting i have been playing with these crashes since last patch and for anet to say its a personnel problem makes me just lol THIS IS NOT A CLIENT PROBLEM fix it or lose people enough said game is unplayable when you have to reboot whole machine in SAFE MODE!!! I’m disgusted that you rage this hard over a thing that has been here for two weeks. I’ve had a pile of technical issues, including this since the very first BWE.. so please get a hold of yourself I can’t log in to GW2 without my gfx crashing on me, and it’s only happening here so again it’s a problem on their end. Hilarious-

Ah sorry to hear that it was that serious :/
The worst thing I personally feel now is that Anet seems to push this beneath a carpet or something. A LOT (ofc not the majority) are having the issues, but they are not responding in any form at all, it’s like their wish for a fluent game is more important than what reality is giving us. I just can’t play, it’s simple as that. And is there any sign of help out there? No ofc not, we gotta troubleshoot everything there is and come up with OUR POSSIBLE MISTAKES, like “get a new CPU” etc. just bullkitten, everything.
Daily for more than 2 weeks:
Try to play Guild Wars 2. Get same error/freezing crash.
Check Forums for new “solution”
Crickets.
Still crashing, game unplayable today. 11/27/2012 Crashes began after “Lost Shores” update. Appropriately named.
I’m having a different problem. I do not get disconnects or crashes; however, I do get blue screens and this started after the Lost Shores update. I used to get blue screens that said memory dump, now my game just freezes utterly and I have to turn off my computer by holding the power button.
I have done thing different before this all started, and since then I have updated my Nvidia GTX 570 to beta, updated my BIOS and all other drivers. I have passed a multiple memory tests AND I can play Skyrim at max setting just fine all day and no memory crash.
Since your patch, you created a memory LEAK somewhere in your code.
If I am wrong, please tell me how and I will try to fix it because I have tried everything!

Yep. Impossible to believe that it is their fault, and quit right away. Some tech support.
