Q:

Hi guys!

I recently bought a GTX 680 lightning, and since then my GPU work bad.
I have a low GPU usage and in some zones a FPS problem ( wvw, Lion’s Arch….).

I don’t think my VGA is underpower, so i’m looking for a solution.

Please help me!

Thanks for watching

A:

so whe i assembled my actual PC, i thought about this problem, so I bought a i7 3930k.
My cpu is very strong and i never reach the full load, so my cpu frequency is the originally because it seems already quite powerful.

Dear friend what CPU are u using ?

Cause as I remember for this card you need at least FX 4100 Oc’ed to 4,6 GHZ or 2500k oc’ed to at least 4GHZ + to not bottleneck the card.

This card is one of top end graphic cards and You won’t see it’s full potential untill You have also extreme CPU.

And as You mentioned that Your GPU usage is low it means a CPU bottleneck.

And tbh in this game it’s better to invest in one of top end CPU’s able to get 4GHZ + on 4-8 cores rather then strong GPU

It should also be mentioned that the Nvidia 600 series cards are PCI-Express version 3.0 compatible and require a motherboard that supports version 3.0 PCI-Express to gain the full potential from these graphics cards.

there is also quite a few others reporting low FPS with the 600 series card which may suggest that they are not optimised with this game yet.

CoolerMaster Masterbox 5 | H110i | AMD Ryzen R7 1800x 4.0GHz | 32GB DDR4
512GB Samsung 950pro | 2TB SATA-3 | AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB

It’s not a problem with your GPU – as pointed out already it’s more likely your CPU that’s holding you back in certain parts of the game. The reason you see the GPU useage drop is because something other than the graphics card (usually the CPU) is limiting the FPS, which in turn limits the number of frames the graphics card has to draw, which in turns leads to lower GPU useage since the card suddenly doesn’t have to work as hard.

Mind you that even with a high end overclocked CPU you will still be limited in certain parts of the game because GW2 is just that heavy. I cap out at about 45-50 fps in LA even with an i5 2500k @ 4.2ghz and in really heavy battles like the dragon fights I get lower than that, sometimes as low as 25-30fps with the CPU useage at > 90% across all 4 cores, which is a pretty clear indication of where the bottleneck is (it might not even be raw CPU power that is lacking, but rather the architecture that is at its limits).

One thing you may want to check is that Nvidia’s new GPU boost feature isn’t screwing you over and causing the card to underclock itself at the wrong moments, since some people have reported this happening with these higher end 600 series cards. I can’t verify any of this, since it’s never happened to me so far – I’ve been playing a dozen different games on this card, even some really simple indie games and my card always stays > 1006mhz while gaming.

PS: the best way to check your clockspeeds while gaming if you don’t have dual monitors is to use the Onscreen Display function of tools like MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision – you can customize the information to be display and then turn the overlay on and off ingame at the press of a button.

Hi guys! sorry for my bad time to reply.

so whe i assembled my actual PC, i thought about this problem, so I bought a i7 3930k.
My cpu is very strong and i never reach the full load, so my cpu frequency is the originally because it seems already quite powerful.

I have partially solved the problem by setting the render to: supersampling. I noticed a slight increase use of the GPU but in some zones when i just open the game i still have about 10 to 30 fps, but increased afterwards.

Thank you for your answer!

So now I need, and we need, to wait the developers to improve the game, for using all the GPU power, right?

P.s what do you think about my CPU? I think is not underpower for that GPU

I guess you didn’t fully grasp the concept after reading it.

GPU usage is low because it isn’t getting instructions from the CPU to work fast enough. CPU is too busy and slow. This is called a bottleneck (concept was explained in Question#4 of the FAQ)

Two options:
1) Upgrade faster CPU or overclock
2) ait for developer to optimize the game to utilize the CPU better.

a 3930K is pritty much as good as you can get without going isnane and buying a 3960×.

However you should DEFFINATLY OC it ..it has sooo much potential over its stock clocks. That will help with your FPS.

next thing to note is that GW2 only uses roughly 3 main threads of any CPU ..so the number of cores and threads you have is irrelivant when over 4. What matters is how fast siad cpu can process those main 3 threads. At which point even 4.5ghz to 5ghz OC cant keep FPS at 60 In 70man+ WvWvW fights.

Untill Anet makes GW2 use all possible threads of a CPU for ts main performance processes ..we wont be seeing top FPS figures in those WvWvW situations.

Now with that said ..a 3930k will show ‘around’ 25% usuage when GW2 caps out the CPU performance. .at that point your GPU usuage will start to drop as it is waiting on the CPU. thats why your 680 is not reaching high % usuage.

3930k 4.6ghz | NH-D14 Cooler | P9x79 Pro MB | 16gb 1866mhz G.Skill | 128gb SSD + 2×500gb HDD
