GW2 Downloader Reset
Same problem just happened to me.
Just had a power trip and have to start downloading from 0 again.
It is just plain inconsiderate and a huge oversight not allowing users to continue downloading from where they left off when the users need to download over 15GB of data from the server. Even more insulting is that a lot of second grade F2P Chinese MMO downloaders actually allow users to continue downloading from where they left off.
It might be a non-issue for first world country but for me, I just spent the last 15 f-ing hours trying to finish the download only having to start from 0 again due to a power trip.
Not expected, not up to standard and not a good first impression especially from a game which I need to pay $60 before I am allowed to install.
@Aicus
Are you sure it started from the very beginning again? I know that when I downloaded it, I was able to stop the download several times and restart it later, and it always began where it had left off. The display can be kind of confusing though, because it starts the bar at 0 again, it’s just that the bar now represents what’s left to download, not the full client.
For Shmoo sounds like it really did restart, which sucks and isn’t intended.
Im having this same problem , i have a slow internet and this is the 2nd day for me downloading it was nearly finished i left my pc on over night and got up early expecting to see a login screen. But i had to restart my pc and there was a repair window that didnt finish and the download restarted back to 250k files remaining. I started searching google to find a fix, ive tried -repair and -image on the exe still restarts, i moved all the files into a new folder. still same outcome. The current Gw2.dat files is at 15,062,962kbs. is there a fix to Not start over or do i really need to wait 2 more days?
Thanks for any help for a Fix
@addexfoe
Yes, I am absolutely sure it restarted because I am looking at the downloader downloading every single one of the 225,000 files. My situation is exactly the same as Tombs, the repair window never finish running when I restart the downloader after the power trip and the downloader just start downloading everything from the very start.
The problem is caused by all the game files (all 225k of them) are stored in a single .dat file. This means when the Gw2.dat file becomes corrupted (like it would if your PC lost power as the file was being modified) then the only way the game downloader knows to repair it is to delete it and re-download it.
Its a silly way to store a large amount of files and I am surprised its even like this. You could expect this level of quality from a new small business starting their first game, but not from a renowned company thats invested millions into the gaming industry. ArenaNet should know better than this, not even Guild Wars 1 uses this method.
What I have done to fix this issue personally for me, is to back up the Gw2.dat file once downloaded then if I ever have to download the entire game again for whatever reason, I just stop the downloader and copy/paste the backup overwriting any other Gw2.dat file in my guild wars folder. After that I start the game again and it usually only has roughly less that 1k files left to download.
With the start of each month I create a new back up in a new folder label for that month that way I can roll back to specific months if needed. This also helps keep my backup up-to-date with the latest patches and monthly add-ons.
you can also buy the game on disc which will leave you just shy of 70k files to update instead of 225k.

Sure, at my upload speed it will arrive in 34 hours.
On a more serious note perhaps you could find a torrent site with the file that would offer a more stable form to get the completed file.

search for GW2 torrent, they exist.
The only exclusive skyhammer stream
Thing just gets better and better, now I am stuck at 99% with 2 files remaining that will never be downloaded.
I’m very sure if I exit the downloader I will have to redownload 225,000 files again.
Should have just asked for a refund.
so what happened Aicus did it finish? start over? your post was 4hrs ago curious to know what happened?
Aicus, Closing the downloader is fine. The reason you had to redownload all 225k files was because the gw2.dat was corrupted by the power loss you experienced. Closing the downloader will save the files properly then exit.

Sorry for not updating.
I managed to fix it by turning off my router, then do a ipconfig/flushdns in the command prompt.
The downloader automatically downloads the remaining 2 files after I turn my router back on.

Actually, I exited the downloader during the second download to test whether it saves my progress or not. I just let it download like 200ish MB, exit it, then launch it again. The conclusion I made from that is it did not saves my progress. So I don’t want to take the risk.
Anyway, I managed to fix the problem as I updated on the post above. So all is good for now.
Thanks everyone for the help.

If this is true then the game would be having write access issues or permissions problem. Something does not seem quite right if that was the case. If the file remained there but forced you to redownload it again after closing the downloader then it could indicate problems with the hard drive itself.
It could be a permissions issue with the directory you were downloading too, ArenaNet advised during the beta period to download to your desktop them move the folder to wherever afterwards.
