Hey all this is my first post, so im sorry if its in the wrong section as i couldn’t seem to find a general section for technical related questions.

I have a terrible PC at the moment,

CPU- amd single core 3700+
nVidia 7950GTX
2GB ram
Windows XP pro

And as expected the game runs awful, which i can’t moan about, as it played the first guild wars and the expansions maxed out with over 50fps.

What PC would you recommend? Or even if i could spend a smaller amount of money on a CPU for my motherboard, The highest i can go due to the 939 pin is an AMD Dual Core 4800+ which apparently should be okay? Any other people got these CPU etc? Cheers again.

At the moment it is a lottery, you could spend over £1k and still not get above 15 fps.

There is nothing you can do about a poorly optimised game.

I would hold off buying a new computer until they address the serious problems in the game first.

I don’t agree that GW2 is poorly optimised; in fact, I’d say it is quite optimised, better than other MMOs that have been out for years.

Frankly, the OP’s PC is ancient and any upgrade for it would still be ancient.

If you’re inclined to build your own, do so as you’ll get a better value. There are plenty of guides/magazines that illustrate how to do this and what components to select based on any budget (Maximum PC being the foremost publication, making sub-$500, $1K, and unlimited budget [~$10K] versions).

I know it sucks but everyone communicating their issues with low fps on high end systems are in the minority. The majority of players are playing the game fine even with cards like GTX260 (my wife is fine in WvW with a radeon 5770 for example).

I’m not saying there isn’t an issue with the game, but for the most part folks are doing fine. There is clearly some setting that is conflicting with some relative unknown… and it appears to be related to the GW2 patches. But like I said this isn’t across the board to everyone (I’d guess at 2% out of 1 million players leaving 20000 ppl posting unhappiness).

I’m sure it’ll get cleared up… hopefully sooner than later!!

Back to the OP’s question, you have an ancient motherboard. You do have a solid GPU however. If you want to fully enjoy GW2 you really want a quad core (preferably i5/i7 cpu) and Win7 64bit OS for at least 4GB ram since XP only sees up to roughly 3.2GB.

You call lag with gtx 680 optimized?

I call lag network latency because that’s what it is.

I call anyone who can’t accurately report a technical issue with proper vernacular and technical data a user with self-inflicted problems before anything else.

Hey…you asked.

GW2 runs smoothly on my *5*80, with smoothly being defined as 60FPS on high settings with a few reasonable, occasional, momentary exceptions.

It’s because the game is optimized for the 500 series. I know the engine and i’ve gotten info from a DEV claiming that this game is running better on mid end and low end computers and gtx 580 is mid end.

Thank you for the replies, unfortunately i don’t have a great deal of money at the moment and my budget would be under £500, which im guessing what get me a great deal of PC.

As for the optimization queries i can’t even start,
Something i was very anoid about was, a few years back the developers said

" People who played guild wars 1 would be able to play guild wars 2 with minor updates to there system " I could max out GW and still get over 40+ fps in massive mob battles. No with everything turned to low/off i get around 10 fps in places with no players/enemies/missions in GW2.

If anyone knows of anyone who’s selling any cheap but reasonably good parts, please feel free to reply or message me!

Thankyou

I really would have to say that it can all depend on settings. My old machine can play the game and 1920×1080 just fine and it is an old Core 2 Duo and a GTX260. Of course I need to turn down the settings for events or WvW but for the most part it I get a frame rate in the 30’s. Just adjusting your settings can often yield very good results.
As was said before your video card seems sufficient but the cpu could probably use some updating.
The people on the hardocp forums helped me quite a bit with my latest build. I can give you a link if you like.

If you’re getting poor frames with a 680, either your card is damaged or something else is slowing the game down. I have a 670 and I have above 60FPS on max settings even in WvW.

Also if it’s not to much to ask your prices are really low compared to the website i use in the uk, the i5 2400 is £169.00, which is around $272.94. So as you can see It’s quiet the expense here.

Haha, no. I can play all other games just as I should. And you cannot, there has been benchmarks on toms hardware showing 35-60 fps ultra on 1920 1080 with 670 and even worse in WvW. So no.

And damaged? Slowing down the game? No, its the optimize since I play all other games fine. Explain that.

For a pc, i would really suggest you to at least save up for a i5, as its fairly decent and the best for the money it costs. Other than that 8 gigs of ram would be advisable, and the gfx, no idea as like said its a lottery atm.

I cant play pvp in gw at all because my gtx 670 wont render enemy players at times, and its not fun beeing killed by untargetable mobs.

Don’t be rude. This is not my issue, it’s people who have a problem and then therefore post everywhere proclaiming that everyone else must have the same problem when they don’t.

Incoming screenshots to prove otherwise;

The images should be self explanatory. One is taken when stood still, and there’s a few more taken auto by fraps during an event with particle effects flying around.

Note that because FRAPS is running in the background, the FPS will be lowered a bit. Probably a couple of %, so nothing major.

really? seriously, really?

@OP I did the upgrade myself rejecting to wait for them to fix the game since my G73 died on me, as posters above stated the game is still under construction^_^ you may end up having poor performance out of your machine with this game and play 100fps BF3 /Crysis 2 etc there is nothing we can do about it but wait. So you can either wait or eff waiting put together a decent machine and enjoy GW2 when its optimized and in the meanwhile play other goodies you missed due to the your current machine’s inability to run them. Atleast thats what I’m doing most of the time since I built my machine.

Ps: If you choose to upgrade right away avoid the overkill or getting low end hardware you will regret later I mean dont put 400$Gpu on a 100$ Cpu or vice-versa balance your budget on each component and stick to intel if gw2 is the only/main thing you will run on your pc.

You’re funny. There are benchmarks at toms hardware only released a couple of days ago and those are what i said. Why, WHY, WHY WHY, do I run EVERY game as i should? 150 FPS BF3 maxed out? Sleeping dogs 30-40 on paper, SLI REQUIRED SETTINGS? Why do I run Stalker; Call of Pripyat on steady 60-70 FPS when benchmarks for my card say 40-62? There’s nothing wrong on my computer and its APPARENTLY AND OBVIOUSLY on anets end. Monday 27th August. 2 days after head start. Pre 2 Nvidia driver updates and 1 (possibly 2) AMD updates and CAP updates. Pre many many GW2 patches.

Look at the benchmarks, 670 averaging over 60FPS on best appearance. That goes against what someone else told me about the same benchmarks too.

Your issue could be something as simple as corrupted data files, a misconfigured control panel settings – unless you actually act like you want help you’re not going to get anywhere.

At the moment it is a lottery, you could spend over £1k and still not get above 15 fps.

I would hold off buying a new computer until they address the serious problems in the game first.

I disagree. I think that most people getting low FPS is due to some issue other than the game. Granted I have an above average gaming rig, but its not liquid cooled crazy rig. You can build a system like mine for right around 1k probably.

CPU: Core I-7 3770k overclocked @ 4ghz (Core I5 will work jsut as well)
GPU: EVGA Gforce 580 3072 GB (factory overclocked)
Ram: 32 GB DDR3 1600 (G. Skill Ripjaw series) really only need 8GB as GW2 is 32 bit client (that leaves 3.75 Gb for game, rest for OS)
HD: C drive is 120 GB SSD (Not needed really, only helps with load times)

I run game at max settings, with AA turned off, depth of field turned off, everything else at absolute maximum 1920×1080 resolution.

I get a consistent 50-110 FPS Pve, 40 – 110 in WvW depending.

I have also tuned my OS services and such, and I dont run any kind of antivurs on my gaming computer (I have a server dedicated to running scans on my network remotely).

You have no idea how many times I’ve seen that when a new game is released. It happens with pretty much every new release in every forum. It’s nearly always something on the user’s end.

That’s obviously not proof that you’ve done anything to verify that your system isn’t having the issue rather than the game. No one will be able to help you until you are willing to take those steps.

I wouldn’t lie. I don’t know how to give proof but I can guarentee you that I play all other games as I should and that it is just GW2 giving me trouble. My system is all fine, experts have checked it and all parts and I’ve re-installed my OS a couple of times. I’m sorry to say this fanboi, but the only game I have problem with is GW2 which means that it is on their end. Sorry. Shouldnt be required to OVERCLOCK my cpu which nvidia suggested to be able to max this game.

There’s a basic list of troubleshooting that people should carry out if they’re having crashes or performance issues;

1) Check drivers – this is for everything, motherboard chipset, sound, graphics etc.
2) Turn off any overclocking. GPU, CPU, RAM, whatever.
3) Stop any unnecessary programs from running in the background.
4) Make sure the power plan is set to high performance.
5) Check temperatures with a tool like RealTemp.
6) If you’re getting blue screens, use a tool like WhoCrashed? to see if it can point out what is causing them.
7) Set GPU control panel settings to “Application defined” wherever possible.
8) Turn Vsync off if it’s enabled.
9) Disable frame limiting.
10) Try with reflections and shadows off.
11) Try with AA off.

They’re all games that have been out for longer than GW2, so obviously they have better driver support.

I don’t see the need for insults, it’s like you don’t actually want any help.

A couple of days ago?

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/guild-wars-2-performance-benchmark,review-32511.html

No. I don’t have any corrupted data. I also had good FPS first days till some patch a week ago, so yeah. I got no corrupt data, nor anything else corrupt. I play all other games as I should and its not about drivers; NVIDIA SAID on the forums that they can’t do anything about it, since its so heavily CPU based (too cpu based = bad optimized). So yeah, its not my computer, its the optimize for specifically my card and my processor. Anet failed hard.
And I get no errors, there’s NOTHING wrong on my computer, since again, I play all other games as I should and I get much better performance than you in most games. So it is.

Have you deleted the local.dat gamefile from my documents to verify that nothing is corrupted?

I’m sure I’m not the only that notices how you ignore it when someone contradicts your ranting. I’m also sure I’m not the only that notices how you say everything is fine on your end yet offer no proof or suggestion as to how you can be sure.

You say you’d like this fixed but when someone tries to help you become extremely aggressive.

Well, I think enough proof is that I play ALL other games as I should and that GW2 is the only game of all hundred of games ive tried which i struggle with?

I doubt any other game you’ve ever owned tests the CPU of your computer like GW2 will. Do you currently have any overclocks on your system? Just because the system doesn’t overheat doesn’t mean that your system is stable. A CPU that is unstable can reboot your computer before it overheats. If you have overclocked your system, and while running GW2, it shuts off, you need to put your system back at stock speeds, or at a lower clock.

I don’t clock, my CPU is stocked 3.3 ghz, but I think my GPU is overclocked, like 1058 mhz as normal cpu and when it gets to turbo or whatever it is, like 1177 or something.

And again, instead of offering any actual proof or willingness to cooperate, you throw out insults and flawed logic. GW2 is the newest game you own, more than likely, so the performance of other games is, from a hardware standpoint, irrelevant.

I’ve done all that and checked everything, so it’s apparently the engine. I max out every other game and I am deeply sorry for my behaviour and attitude but I was looking forward for this game ever since the beginning, 5 years ago. It’s a dissapointment that anet can’t get it to run on my system and that I need to overclock it in order to get it fixed. I guess ill go back to games that are visually good and also good optimized like BF3.

Are you using antivirus? do you have realtime scanning on? what other programs do you have running in the background. Do you have a web browser open playing a flash video? All of these things greatly reduce FPS potentially.

Antivurs on regular basis, tho i dont think I have realtime scanning on. I run Steelseries driver program to control my Diablo 3 headset, also my razer driver program. Nothing more, I’ve seen people getting like 90% better FPS with windows 8 so can be the case for those who do. I don’t know.

Where abouts in the UK are you mate? Think you read my mind I am having a clear out at the min and have my old Opteron 185/FX-60 dual core that I am looking to get rid of.

The Opty 185 is the socket 939 server version of the FX-60 but if your motherboard supports the FX-60 then the Opty 185 should still work ok.

I think I still have 4gig DDR ram lieing around somewhere aswell.

The motherboard died years ago but held on to the CPU just beacuase I loved it so much it was my first high end gaming PC upgrade that I installed myself.

I dont want much for it and it is pretty dam slow compared to the newer stuff but could be a nice short term upgrade for you, if your interested download CPU-Z and if you can tell me your motherboard name, moddle number and BIOS verssion I can have a look see if I can find a CPU support list for your Mobo

I got this comp prebuilt and haven’t adjusted anything expect GPU so that is not the problem. I just updated my bios version. CPU-Z is bugged and shows my motherboard to be like 120 c xd, so does speedfan but when I downloaded aida64 it was 33 cc so i guess those was bugs.

It’s really hard to tell what kind of parts you’d want to have in your PC. As you can see, there are problems all over place.

For example, I’m running this game on a very trusty and solid 8800GT, which has never let me down on any game over the last few years, with a Q6600 Quad and 4GB RAM. Running everything on medium at 1080 resolution. This nets me around 40-60 FPS in most outdoors locations, while I’m usually at 25-40 (sometimes 60) in towns.

The problem I have witnessed the most seem to be serious memory leaks across the maps. Like I said, I can have up to 60 FPS outside, but sometimes, if I take a step into a certain direction they would fall down out of the blue, without an obvious reason. Taking a few steps back and everything is back to normal. But in any case, there is never a serious lag, even with seemingly low FPS. The game feels a bit “slower” but never to the point where it is unplayable or can no longer be enjoyed.

Talking about “lag”, I did have that SFX/Attack animation lag once or twice. Where the attack sounds are out of sync. But that vanishes over time or as soon as i relog.

So yes, I would agree that this game still needs optimization. Memory leaks, particle effects/lighting on foggy areas and all that can cause drops in FPS and it can affect even high-end PCs. Not to mention the world-boss events when “hundreds” of people fire off everything they have and the screen is just a blurry blot of twirls and colors. I do think that is something where everyone can feel a serious break-down in performance.

Is it the AMD Opteron Dualcore 185 (revE6) (Socket939) ? If it is my motherboard supports it.

I’m not sure if links are allowed on here, but here’s mine, its pretty old to be honest.
