Hi all,

So this one is a tough topic. My computer is having some problems for like 1 year but it is not continously. Anyway since a patch in march (just guessing), guild wars 2 is messing up my computer. I have attached a picture so you can see some of the graphic problems. This happens after 5 minutes with recommended settings (including texture stretching) and a minute later my pc will go into a stand by situation where I have just one option: restart. I have to mention that the computer was checked (voltage, temperature, cpu, gpu, mainboard) graphic card, hd drive and ram were exchanged and tested.

You could say now this is definitely a graphic card problem. I think so too so I have started other Next-Gen Games and: No problem at all!

Anyone has an idea? I´m lost here.

regards
Dominic

Have you tried running FurMark or some other GPU stress tester for a few minutes? If it glitches or crashes the system you either have a graphics driver problem or faulty hardware.

Oh, and if your GPU is already near dead, stress testing can kill it for good. But it sounds like you may need a new one anyways.

It could also point to an under powered GPU or an overheating issue — not necessarily a faulty component that requires replacing.

Well I have an update for you. I have underclocked my graphic card and it works. Well after some hours of playing the graphic issues will appear and I need to restart. Since today it doesn´t work that well anymore. The graphic issues get really heavy after 20minutes. So that means my graphic card is dead right?? What do you mean I need a new one anyway? It´s not that bad

I’m on this boat, what is your power supply and temperatures when the graphics card is under load in Guild Wars 2.

Sometimes overclocking doesn’t play nice with others, but definitely note your CPU and GPU temps after playing gw2 for about 15 minutes (or around the time the lag starts).

Have you tried setting your graphics card control program set to application controlled?

Take a look at the Hardware Monitor screenshot you posted; specifically – the voltages shown. I have never known Hardware Monitor to be buggy.

Those voltages are all-over-the-place and WAY out of spec if those readings are true – which would explain the odd crashing you’re having.

The only way to know for sure is to check the voltages with a meter (check the 5 and 12 volt rails which can be done easily on the molex connectors of your power supply).

Anyway, if those readings are correct, your power supply is failing and needs to be replaced.

Edited to add:

1. Vcore may vary a little — but .256 volts variance is quite a bit (at idle). Vcore on my CPU (@ 1.4 volts) only varies about .1 volts.

2. 3.3 volts is varying from 2.256 volts to 3.360 volts = way too much.

3. 5 volts is dropping to 3.629 volts = way too much.

4. The worst one is the -12 volt rail. It’s changing by over 6 volts!

Make sure to check that out with a meter or substitute a known working power supply.

Just to note: I’ve had two motherboards with which HWMonitor was way off with some of the voltages — it was probably interpreting the sensor values wrong (incorrect multipliers, etc.), as a multimeter didn’t read anything out of the ordinary.

Still, wrong multiplier constants can’t really explain what’s going on in the screenshot above. -12 V doesn’t matter as it’s only actually used by ancient junk and probably has about zero load on it, but the 5 V looks seriously wrong.

Yep. The -12v (I’m sure) isn’t being used – unless that machine has RS232 serial ports.

But yes, the sensors certainly could be off (mine are off a little).

Edited: The -12v may be used for the network card (forgot about that for a minute).

Those could be due to the faulty sensors that much of a drop could do further failures not graphical artifacts I believe besides OPs computer runs other games without a problem as I understood from what I read (just read a little tho). Checking with another psu should prove whether or not your PSU is doomed or not but dont do that on your own if you dont have enough knowledge you can damage your other components.

For the lulz Can I get your PSU brand/model and how long have you been using it?

Hey guys interesting to read. My PSU is the following:

ATX CombatPower CP-750W, 750W, 120mm

I´m using it since I have the PC (~September 2011)

It was checked by my retailer 3 month ago. I was talking to him yesterday and he said everything was fine. He also tested the computer with a different PSU.
As mentioned the PC is running fine with some other games (Tomb Raider, Assassins Creed III) but only on lower settings. We both had the opinion that the mainboard is damaged so we sent it to Gigabyte. After 3 month I´ve got the same mainboard back and they said there technicans couldn´t find any errors :/

Now since some here have the opinion it couldn´t be the power supply that causes those errors… what is the problem? I´m lost for month with this computer.

“As mentioned the PC is running fine with some other games (Tomb Raider, Assassins Creed III) but only on lower settings

What happens when you try to run on higher settings with those games?

At this point I would say that your graphics card is failing. I also wanted to mention that “so and so tested [insert hardware] and it’s fine” doesn’t mean anything (I’m not referring to the factory technicians here).

As a tech, when I go to work on something that a previous tech has been working on – I check out everything whether they say “I already checked that” or not. The only realistic way to check computer components is to substitute [known] working components in their place; well, unless you have an oscilloscope and other technical equipment AND have access to a schematic diagram (Gigabyte does, so I’m sure the mobo is fine).

Sorry for not responding. Heavy weekend :P

Well when running those games with higher settings the game crashes. I will test it again today and will report.

I don´t own any tech equipment but I will try to get my pc to work where I at least can exchange some components to find out if the graphic card has a failure.

ok took me a while because my PC was running a WHOLE DAY without problems.
Yesterday I was running ACIII for about an hour and nothing happened. Afterwards GW2 and still no problems. Today I played again (all without underclocking) and after one hour in GW2 the problems came back. Directly switched to ACIII and the same old story. Picture in appendix. I will built in another graphic card this week and will respond back.

Thank you all for the help and patience!
