Guild Wars 2

I played the game for more than a year now and it wasn’t causing any problems, but few months ago it started crashing and rebooting my computer at random times.. Sometimes I can play for hours without a problem but sometimes it crashes in 5 minutes.

I’ve read countless threads of people having this same problem but I haven’t found an answer.

I followed the instructions in this thread:

I installed SpeedFan and GameBooster, turn both of them on and changed the game to windowed mode (ran all of them as administrator), but it still crashed in less than 5 mins, and I was checking the SpeedFan and the temps seemed fine (it showed 37 in the icon idk if thats ok or not).

My specs:

Processor: AMD Athlon™ II x4 640
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Monitor: ATI Radeon HD 4600

That “Memory at address bdc98488 could not be read” message leads me to think about possible RAM issues. Try to run the memory test tool and see what happens.

To run the tool:
Open Memory Diagnostics Tool by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type Memory, and then click Diagnose your computer’s memory problems.? If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Let us know what happens

Uhh…yeah…I would ignore that article because the guy that wrote it is an idiot and has no clue about what he’s talking about.

However, I do agree that this appears to be a RAM problem (or possibly a third-party program in memory that is conflicting with GW2).

Maybe, but ive seen similar solutions in at least 4 different places. Either way if its not a ram problem, then it would be a place to start, at the very least.

Sorry for the late response. I’ve ran the diagnose and it says that there’s no problem with my memory.

Could this be an overheating problem? Because I didn’t clean my computer for more than a year now IIRC. Also, after I made this post I went in Gw2 in window mode and checked SpeedFan, I saw that Gw2 uses about 80%+ of my CPU, and most of my fans temps were high (the little fire icon appeared near them), and one of the fans named ‘core’ was at 51-52 C.

*edit: Also I’d like to note that I’ve installed Gw2 in a removable disk drive, I don’t know how to describe it, it’s one of those huge USB disks that have 1 terrabyte space, it says HITACHI on it.

I don’t think that the removable drive would cause those issues. As far as temps being too high, your processor operates between 55c-71c

So 51c-52c doesn’t seem too hot for that chip. But cleaning it out certainly wouldn’t hurt.

Just for kicks and giggles, try checking out the java thing. If your RAM is fine, and your CPU isn’t too hot, it would point to something else causing the issue, and from what I’ve seen in various places Java tends to be the culprit. Although it could very well be a different program altogether.

Okay thanks for the reply! I tried to follow the article instructions but the ‘Engine’ folder doesn’t appear in my ‘InstallShield’ folder, so I just uninstalled my Java completely and re-installed it, I also checked all my drives if they are up to date, and they seem fine. I’ll try to run the game and report back.

If you know about other possible causes I’ll be happy to know them.

edit: I ran the game and as expected it crashed again and my computer rebooted.. BUT, I found a text file named ‘THIRDPARTYSOFTWAREREADME’ in my Guild Wars2 file, so it might be the cause, I’m attaching the file if you want to read it.
If this isn’t the cause, then ill have to uninstall the game and re-install it in another directory .

I got a new card….it burned out….returned for another one….that bured out……got another one, called nvidia, I was under volting my card. Fixed it. And now I’ve been playing fine ever since. That was a year and a half ago.

Point is check your card and psu. As crazy as it sounds just because you get a read error doesn’t mean it’s ram. It could be your card going. My psu failed which lead to under volting and burning out my cards while playing.

This is a highly plausible scenario. Again, thanks everyone for sharing experiences.

—update 20141002: unfortunately, I replaced my powersupply with a brand new one and the problem persists. New video card (with lower power requirements than older one) and new compatible PSU with almost 100W more available power. I’m afraid it still crashes. Mostly colored checkered/black patterns with audio in the background or black screens with audio and the occasional flat out black screen/hung. I have reached out to a former colleague at NCsoft to see if he can learn anything more.
