This has been happening for awhile now. When I’m in game, I’m bothered by the fact that it could crash at any given time randomly. So far I have encountered the following:

1. Screen froze and then black out for about 10 secs in total, then returned to normal. Basically it’s the “Display driver has stopped responding and recovered” error. (it could stay normal for hours until it suddenly occurs, and sometimes one time after another immediately)

2. Screen black out with audio still on, I can see the in-game cursor and still move it, but when I tab out, I found the error window that says “Guild Wars 2 has encountered an unrecoverable graphics driver error and must terminate”.

3. Similar to #1, except it doesn’t even black out and stay frozen like that forever. I can’t tab out, or use Ctrl+Alt+Delete, only thing I can do is force-shut down the computer.

4. Game suddenly crashes to desktop and this message welcomes me.

5. Similar to #3, game stays frozen (sometimes black out too), and my computer is making terrifying noisy sound, that anyone heard it would know they gotta force-shut it down immediately…

I have tried the following trying to solve the issue:

1. Updating driver to newest version, sometimes rolled back too (currently using 12.8 with cap profile), plus clean uninstall every times using Driver Fusion/Sweeper

2. Lowering my GPU’s clock speed to default (it’s a factory OC’ed model)

3. Lowering graphical setting in the game (ironically sometimes it crashes immediately after I just lowered everything lol…)

4. Ran 3DMarks and MSI Kombuster tests, passed them with no issue found

5. Monitoring GPU temperature during normal time and right after a crash just occurred, the temperature is always within normal range (about 50~60C at most)

6. Following the instructions in this board’s “Black Screen Issue (AMD/ATI)” thread

I have tried to re-create the crashing via opening/closing programs, or doing certain things in game, but I just can’t find the cause. For example, sometimes I’m just standing there not doing anything, camera not moving much, very few players or NPC around me, and I still crashes.

It’s so frustrating not knowing WHEN it could/would happen, because of this I have yet to try PvP, WvW, or dungeon much, because being stuck for 10 secs or possibly crashing at any time, would be fatal in those activities…

I’m really out of ideas, btw I just got this desktop new only about 3 months ago.

Try lowering the memory clock a little on the GPU. Every time I’ve had that issue it’s been caused by the memory being clocked too high.

That GPU temperature is excellent. It’s definitely not a thermal thing. Most modern GPUs handle into the 80 degree range without issue.

I encourage you to contact Support by filing a ticket through the “Ask a Question” tab on that linked page. They will be able to assist you.

I’ve had my share of random crashing issues. I don’t know this would apply, but you could check my theories here.

Hmm, I was tweaking the GPU clock in CCC’s AMD Overdrive, but I couldn’t lower the memory clock any lower.

The default for HD 6850 would be 1000 MHz, but CCC only let me set it to 1050 MHz by lowest, would that 50 MHz be much of a difference?

@Gaile

Thanks, I just submit a ticket too. Btw you added a small “-” in front of your link in the URL tag, but anyway I have checked it.

Well, I’m not sure if this particular PSU of mine is the problem. I recalled HD 6850 requires an at least 500W PSU, and mine’s a 600W one :/

Probably not :-/
