Not even sure if I should post this or send in a tech support ticket but going to try the post first. Maybe someone else has had this problem and found a fix.
I am frequently having the game lock up my entire system. The screen freezes up and there is a loud buzz from my speakers. The only way to get out of this is a hard reset.
System info: Intel i5, Nvidia GTX570 310.90 drivers, 8gig, Windows 7 64-bit
Anyone else having this issue or do I have something I need to replace. I have had this crash twice tonight while in EB within an hour of each other. I’m so frustrated right now I’m ready to quit playing.
GW2 is very CPU intensive. I would make sure that your CPU and GPU are not overheating. Check for dust etc… and use a program like MSI Afterburner to monitor your temperatures ingame.
Okay, tried that. I monitored my CPU and GPU temps waiting for the game to freeze. When it finally did, my cpu and gpu were both under 50 C. So I’m back asking for more suggestions of things to check.
I’m in the same situation as OP, seems like lost of people are getting crashes after the last patch…
Try to set your audio settings ingame to the default settings. There is a known audio bug with the game that sadly has not been fixed yet.
Tried that. Crashed again. twice in an hour. Not a happy camper atm
I suggest trying to repair the client.
If you are having problems running Guild Wars 2, the data archive may have become corrupted. Please follow these steps to verify and repair the archive:
Locate your Gw2.exe file.
Right-click on the file and select Create shortcut.
Rename this new shortcut to Guild Wars 2 Repair.
Right-click on Guild Wars 2 Repair and select Properties.
Locate the Target line and add -repair to the end.
Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\gw2.exe” -repair
Click OK.
Double-clicking Guild Wars 2 Repair will begin the repair process. The game will launch when it is complete.
Note: Keep in mind that the verification and repair process will run each time you double-click the Guild Wars 2 Repair shortcut. If you would like to play the game immediately without repairing the archive, double-click on Gw2.exe or another shortcut without the -repair command.
Thanks for trying Stormcrow but that didn’t work either.
I’ve had this problem occasionally for a while now but it’s worse that ever. And really frustrating.
same problem here
Try updating your display drivers. I know that there have been many many reports of this lately since the last patch. I personally haven’t had any crashes but I get the feeling that the last patch affected systems with certain configurations.
You can try this as well it does work for some people
Delete the File ’Documents\Guild Wars 2\local.dat

i have the latest drivers
and i already tried deleting the local file
System shutdowns can be caused by power failures as well. What is your PSU? GW2 is redonkulously CPU bound and as such, draws more power to the CPU than most other applications.
One thing that you can do is look in the event viewer log and see what the errors are after the crash.
Technical Support
Hi Garreth MacLeod – There’s a couple of documents I’d like for you to provide if you feel comfortable sharing this information. First, I’d like to collect a Game Advisor report so I can look into why you might be experiencing this crash. You can download the Game Advisor application at the link below:
http://us.ncsoft.com/gameadvisor/
Please note that you will be automatically prompted to install Game Advisor upon clicking the link. Once you’ve generated the report, you can attach it to this thread by clicking “More posting & formatting options…”
Additionally I’d like to collect a crashlog from you. You can find this by navigating to Documents\Guild Wars 2 and it will be the ArenaNet.log file. This may give us some idea as to why you’re experiencing these crashes.
Hi Ashley,
I don’t mind sharing that info, especially if it helps you folks figure out what is going on. even moreso if it helps solve the issue for other folks as well.
The Game Advisor program saved the file as a .zip. However, the forums do not allowed .zip attachments so I uploaded the .txt file that was in the .zip file.
If you need anything else just let me know.
On a positive note, I played WvW for a few hours tonight and did not freeze up.
Sounds like the same crashes I have been experiencing. They’ve occurred in the past but never frequently. Just these past few days I’ve been experiencing the same freezing as OP but in back to back occurrences within 15-20min Happened 4 times lastnight before I gave up. I’m interested in the solution to this topic.
I’ll be watching this thread.
Just an update for Anet.
Yesterday I froze 3 times in an hour. I was on my Ele. Twice I was in Wvw, once in Lion’s Arch. The time at Lion’s Arch I was standing at the Mystic Forge not doing anything at the time.
Today I played several hours on my Thief. Didn’t freeze even once. I know it’s weird but could this be related somehow to what profession I’m on? That’s sounds absolutely crazy now that I typed it out. Hmm.
some i am trying this gameadvisor link and also tried to look for my “arenanet” file and can’t seem to find it. did a search as well and nothing.
Yep, I’ve had my entire computer freeze in the middle of the game. Never happened before. Had the third freeze just now. Then the GW2 server won’t let me or my guild friends back in.

Same thing happened to me, but ive been experiencing full system crashes to a blue screen of death stating irql is not less or equal to…I’m not sure if this is an issue with my computer ( which i just built 6 months ago) or a game issue.
My system only crashes when playing this game
Same here for a month or so.

And mine didn’t crash on the game until just recently. I have to press the power button to get out of the frozen screen.
Cannons I hate to say this, but that sounds like your power supply is dieing. I’ve had 3 go in the past, each acted differently, the 2nd one acted like yours is now.
I’m getting these crashes as well. Came back to the game after a month or two, and suddenly it’s making my computer crash, seemingly at random.
AMD Phenom II X4 965
GeForce GTX 560
8 GB RAM
No other game makes my entire system crash like this, and GW2 never did this before I started playing again last week.
I had the same problem. Reinstalled the game. Removed recent Windows 8 updates. It only crashed once after this when I was using Mumble. I’ve played about 30 hours without using Mumble without a crash.
Tempted to try one more time with Mumble.
Having the same issues. Hopefully Anet can acknowledge something is wrong, instead of blaming the user’s hardware.
I have exactly the same problem! It has been happening since January after some update occurred. Since then, Arenanet seem to have fixed it, except when another update brings it back again. From January till now i recall the problem “reappearing and being fixed” at least 3 times. I noticed the problem reappearing yesterday and so far, it hasn’t been fixed yet, so i’m still experiencing those frequent system freezes.
I have tried clean installs, disk checks, memory diagnostics, and disk formats to solve these issues without success.
Some other problems i have experienced related to this issue. They happen after the System Freeze:
- If i manage to close Gw2, the CPU continues to periodically have 100% usage bursts. During those bursts, the mouse and everything else freezes. Only a hard reset solves the problem.
- Sometimes after the “System Freeze”, Windows fails to boot. The way i see it, this is very serious. After Windows tries to automatically repair itself and yet fails to find any problem, Windows can boot normally again.

Same problem, Been playing the game for about a week now and everything was fine. Today my PC froze 5 or 6 times once midgame a few times when i was trying to change locations, and a few times when I tried to change my character. It’s not BSOD, or at least i don’t think it is since windows doesn’t save any information about these freezes in its logs. Re-downloading 20 gigs atm T.T
Pc froze 3 times already today, each time while switching zones. Anyone actually working on a fix? I play to have fun and believe me having to hard-reset my pc isn’t exactly my idea of fun. Not even a “Were aware of the situation” from you guys. Anyone home over there?
I’m still having the issue and I see several other folks are having this issue or at least a similar issue. I’ve not heard anything from ArenaNet after that initial request from Ashley.
I’m tempted to uninstall and reinstall like Zafira did. Would like to hear something back from ArenaNet before doing that though.
This bug happens to me ever since I play the game, some periods more, some less.
I reported it months ago, there were million comments about this, zillion solutions, had over 15 tickets from Anet about the things I have to do to fix this. Did them all.
Nothing helped. I changed my internet provider (!) and bought a completeli new computer – changed the Nvidia game card to Ati, , 64 bit operating sistem, no firewall installed, i5 – 3570, 8 Gb … nothing has changed. All my settings are on LOW.Game looks awful and I freeze in Fractals or just standing in LA. The screen is in horizontal thin stripes now, instead of the black screen on Nvidia…every time I need to do a hard reset.
This problem persist ever since I play the game, on different computers and different internet providers. It is not up to anyones computer, settings, internet. It is the game.
The biggest issue is – does not happen to everyone so no one is fixing it. We bought the game, we can not play it but there are others who can and that seems to be perfectly all right with Anet.
I want my money back anet!!!
