Game reboots computer
Sounds like an issue with your computer. Is anything overheating or do you have any other issues anywhere else on your PC (noticeable during other games, while online, etc.?) The game may crash to desktop but your computer restarting just sounds like it’s trying to protect itself from damage (i.e. overheating, which is the first thing that comes to mind for me.)
Have not seem that issue either. I play fine for hours, even in heavy WvW battles. My dad did have that issue with his computer, and it was overheating. We just opened it up, used some compressed air to clean it (it was pretty dirty), and it was all back to normal.
Pretty much what Scott said, a reboot like that is the computer trying to protect itself either from heat or from a power issue. Clean it out first, get yourself something like Real Temp or SpeedFan to monitor your temperatures.
No I am able to play fine for hours and then boom starts having problems. I’ve read on another feed that someone else was having problems with guild wars games only. But as far as the system is concerned there should be non problem its an Asus G73S i7 with 8gb ram and a nvidia gtx 460m video card with 1 gb of ram on card. I play for hours on Star Wars online and have no problems at all. So I’m pretty sure its a Guild Wars 2 game problem. And as far as the temperature the gpu was running fine at 147 fahrenheit so nothing bad at all.
and what about your CPU temperature?
Even though you may think it’s guild wars doing it, it still seems like it’s your computer. Maybe guild wars just makes your machine run really hot to the point of needed to restart. Plus, you said you are fine for hours…well maybe it’s after those hours that your machine just craps out and dies and needs to be restarted to control heat.
Well like I said I havent had any problems from any other games and I too thought it was overheating problem but I play fine for hours with no problems. And had no problems with other mmos…ive played a few heh. Runes of magic, Lord of the Rings online, Star Wars and other high intense games with cpu and gpu loads. But as far as the cpu temp all I have is a gadget to see how much cpu load there is and not sure of a good one to see temperatures… Dont like running just anything if you have any good ones without worrying about viruses let me know. I’ll be happy to try em out and see the temp.
RealTemp or SpeedFan
Check your error files. Windows 7 won’t bluescreen it just goes black and you have to look up the error ( Use event viewer ).
When I had this issue with another game I had to replace my PSU.
I’ll go download realtemp or speedfan and check it out.
Could be bad ram too. If you’re certain it’s not heat, run this overnight when you go to bed and see if you have any errors (or got a reboot/crash… which indicate it failed, by the way :P)
Brandi I looked in event viewer and found the time it went out. What should I look for in the event viewer to figure out why?
Brandi I looked in event viewer and found the time it went out. What should I look for in the event viewer to figure out why?
Look under Windows Logs > System and look for a big red X with the word Critical next to it around the time it shut down. If it’s not there, then likely there was no BSOD so it’s still overheating or power.
No I found the critical but the information was that the system didnt shut down correctly which is not that helpful and I thought maybe I was missing something. The event ID was 41 task catagory 63.
Event id 41 is due to the computer losing power suddenly. I would look at trying a different power supply. My old sales partners would hate me for suggesting it but you could go buy a new one to test it out and return it later if it doesn’t solve the problem :P
I have the same issue, used memtest and checked all temps. I couldn’t open the event viewer (according to google 1 of the windows updates actually broke it, there is a fix but takes time and I will do it eventually) but it is not something that has to do with the computer. I already made a own thread but after doing so I found out a similar problem arised during Diablo 3. That problem was driver related and mostly for NVidia users. No other game on my computer resets my computer only Guild Wars 2 just like yours, latest beta driver made it slightly more frequent so it has to be a issue between GW2 and NVidia.
So you think it could really be the power supply…why is it only doing it in Guild Wars? Not sure where to find one its a 150W power pack for a laptop. Ill have to look around or take the power supply back and have it replaced if it is that. But thank you all for the help it is appreciated. Trying to do use all of it…Just got realtemp and im setting it up as well.
Also along with the event 41 I had an event 6 basically at same time before the 41.
If it’s a laptop that complicates things. It’s even more likely to be a heat related issue and the laptop is literally cutting power to save itself. As opposed to being underpowered or strained power supply, since I generally accept the idea that most laptop manufacturers aren’t that silly. Unlike desktop computers where people can upgrade things freely and run into PSU issues.
The heat may be generated in the other components within the laptop not just the gpu or cpu. Have you tried getting a laptop cooler?
Something like this?
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834992853
Also make sure it’s not sitting flat on a surface, elevate the rear of it to allow airflow under the chassis as well.
event id 6 is a BIOS firmware issue, that options that control your cpu are incompatible with the OS. Can try updating your BIOS from the manufacturer’s website. It “shouldn’t” be causing this problem though.

Yea I have a rosewill aluminum laptop cooler. Not sure if you seen the model of laptop is asus G73s. I wasnt sure if you have heard any problems with them overheating.
Still trying to figure out why I havent had this problem with any other mmo. I mean star wars online I was on probably 9 hrs straight with no problems. Its kinda strange.

After looking quickly there’s a few threads about overheating problems with the G37S and driver issues if you’re using them straight from AMD as opposed to the ones supplied on the ASUS website. I would start there. Also it wouldn’t hurt to try and dust out the fans with some compressed air, as some people are indicating that 140F/60C+ for the video card is a bit too high for that particular model.

Some games have different requirements and put more or less strain on some components or demand different support from product drivers.
Well the G73s is an I7 intel but ill check asus website for video drivers to see if they have anything current.

Yeah but it’s using an AMD/ATI video card
I really doubt it is his laptop, my desktop is having same issue but on a NVIDIA card, no other game except GW2 does it. It must be Driver / Game related and not computer related. It CAN’T be :O
Tradewind no it has a nvidia gforce 460m. I was just wanting to make sure you knew that it was nvidia and intel.

You’re right, sorry was reading the Asus product page for the G73J, looked the same so I clicked it. Still get the drivers from the Asus website for the G73S lol.
Its ok just didnt want you thinking I was trying to be a smart butt. Also Theslayernl yea the other person i found on a old Guild wars feed about 2 months old was a person who also had nvidia. So im wandering if theres some sort of error that could be causing immediate shut down when generated.
Been having more problems with the computer hard shutting down playing GW2, so I fired up RealTemp and it is showing that all 4 cores on my I-5 (stock cooler and speeds) have had a thermal throttling episode logged. Never had any issues playing anything else. The Grove seems particular bad for triggering it. Graphics settings are auto-detect but I have noticed that there is a drop-down in the options to limit the frame rate which has unlimited as default, so I’ll give it another go tomorrow with that set to an actual value.

I own the Asus G74JW-1A laptop for use when I travel and shut downs were constant throughout the Beta Weekends, however due to continues optimizations from the Dev team at Anet I will say they have come a long way. Much further than any other game at this stage.
Here is the issue, the laptop overheats and it auto shuts down. Here is what I found out that works in preventing shut downs during all of the beta weekends and this past weekend.
Step 1. Turn Turbo Boost OFF! GW2 is not fully optimized to handled overclocked systems and in this case of this laptop it doesn’t do a very good job at all. It overworks your CPU into overheating. Turning off turbo boost makes it more stable for the client to handle, its like if your driving a car always in the red at 8K RPM while only going 30 MPH.. So turn it off, you shouldn’t notice any performance decrease.
Step 2. I know you love your graphics settings but turn them down. For me, when I put all my settings on high, doesn’t matter what I am doing, my laptop will shut off. Try auto detect first, and if not, try turning your shaders, post processor and shadow settings down first. These I find are the most taxing on the GTX 640M GPU for my laptop. If that does not work turn down other settings, even on low, the game looks amazing, but there is no need to go so far as to subsample…
(for me after I did these things, my temps were around 75C which sounds high but really is not for this laptop and I ran the game for several hours afterwards last weekend)
Step 3. If your having more issues after all of this, I would suggest cleaning out your system of dust. There are tons of step by step tutorials on youtube for this specific laptop. I would suggest taking a look the different methods and choosing what you are comfortable doing so you don’t cause any damage to your laptop.
Extra Tips
Having a clear desk space around your laptop helps with airflow, as the air is pushed out of the back of your laptop like a dual exhaust system. Make sure there is plenty of room behind your laptop as well because it does you no good if that hot air recirculates back into your computer.
Make sure you are in a cool environment. Ventilate the room by keeping a door open or turn on a fan, open a window if its cold outside.
If you are really desperate you can turn on the air conditioning. This however is just not really advisable as AC is expensive and possibly not as effective as steps 1 or 2 also it probably wont do much if you are only lowering the room temperature by a few degrees.
Steps 1 and 2 should at this point, give you the most benefit. Step 3 will help if steps 1 and 2 did not solve your issues, and the rest is just whatever craziness I did so I could play the BWEs while I was playing on my laptop.
I can say for the last few months my laptops average shut downs have drastically been reduced and last weekend It only shut down once when I decided to crank my graphical settings to high/max.
I have the same issue, so I don’t think it’s his computer. I also have an ASUS motherboard but my system is Intel Core i7 2600, two Geforce GTX570 in SLI 8 gig of ram. This computer is less than a year old and has no issues in other games except Guild Wars 2.
I’ve had the company I bought the system from run stress tests and it passed and is not overheating at all (has good cooling). What happens is, my screen will turn a pink/purple colour for maybe a second and then reboot itself. Happens mostly while in The Mists.
Please post any known solutions here. It’s getting really frustrating.
Its not overheating or the computer.
When I started experiencing the resets, I’ve monitored my GPU/CPU temperatures and they are not going high (using closed loop water cooling). PSU is fine as well (Corsair AX750).
The symptoms point to the NVidia drivers reacting in a gibberish way to something that GW2 does. Someone said that 296 series drivers resolved the problems for him, but for us, the owners of 6xx series cards is not a solution – the earliest version supporting those cards is 301.42.
Ok, reverting back to 304 from 306.02 solved the problem for me. I guess there is something wrong with those ‘optimized for GW2’ drivers.
From what I know those drivers are not exactly optimized for GW2 since it only lists Ambient Occlusion support added for Guild Wars 2 and not xx% performance increase in Guild Wars 2. I am going to revert to 304 as well now so I can get rid of this weird and bad computer reset bug.
Bluetooth I tried to disable Turbo boost in bios but there is no option for this laptop. I did however clean out dust ealier when I first had thought it was a overheating problem which helped drop the temperature. I also downloaded realtemp 3.7 to see the temperature max while in game and set the program to log. I have turned down the framerate to max fps 60 in game and also lowered the graphics settings. I also downloaded the nvidia drivers directly from laptop website. So hopefully all this helps but when I monitored the temperatures they never when above 162f on the cpu and 152f on gpu. So not sure that its an overheating problem but if is ill be able to log it now. Sounds like there is a few having problems with nvidia cards doing this. So it could be drivers. I want to thank everyone for the help. Also one thing I have noticed is that on my I7 core 3 is usually up to like 80% + but the other cores are in the 20 to 30% range…So also wondering if one core is getting too hot and maybe could be caused by the multiprocessing programming. Not sure I’ll update if i have any more problems.
If your computer is automatically rebooting, it’s probably one of two things. 1. your computer is BSOD’ing due to hardware or driver error (but windows is automatically restarting) or 2. your computer’s power supply is insufficient or going bad, and is restarting the system. GW2 is a very hardware-intensive game and demands more system resources than WoW, so it could be causing an already existing problem to surface whereas WoW wasn’t.
If you want to check if your computer is BSOD’ing, right click “My Computer” select “properties” then go to “Advanced System Settings” on the left, then “Advanced” tab, click “Settings” next to “Startup and recovery” and UNCHECK “Automatically restart” then click OK. After doing this If you see a BSOD then you probably have some flaky hardware (bad ram, unstable OC, or overheating issues) or a driver issue.
(edited by Aristar.4095)
We can keep pointing to Hardware but I am 100% sure it is related to a “Bad Relationship” between nVidia drivers and GW2 sadly. I’m now down to the first and only “WHQL-Certified” released driver for the 600-series (All beta’s gave problem). If that still gives me resets then I will just have to either accept reboots or stop playing GW2.
As example here are people who complained in May on the D3 forums with EXACT same issue http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/4211001534 it is a problem and it has to be fixed. ArenaNet please communicate with nVidia or ask them if they know anything about this issue. I use a Gigabyte GTX670 Windforce OC Edition, it is factory overclocked and it doesn’t cause any issue on any other game.
(edited by Theslayernl.5219)
I don’t see this “bad relationship” since I’ve played on a 690 with beta drivers for weeks with no reboots, and a friend of mine on his 670 too. An application can’t suddenly reboot a computer, there’s usually precautions that prevent that. in my IT experience, this usually happens when a hardware or driver failure is detected. People keep saying their system doesn’t reboot on other games, but other games may not stress the system as hard. If someone brought a machine to me complaining about these issues, the first thing I’d be doing is stress testing to reproduce the problem outside of the game in order to determine the faulty hardware. (Using Prime95, OCCT, Unigine Heaven, EVGA OC Scanner on Heavy Mode, etc)
(edited by Aristar.4095)
I do not know OCCT but I have used both Prime95 together with Unigine Heaven and let both run for several hours with no problems at all. I still find it hard to believe that GW2 stresses my computer to breaking point, if it did then I am truly amazed and wondering who is responsible for breaking my computer then and what is broken.
I’m having the same issue. I’ve only had it in the human starting area once (when the final animation triggers) and when I’m in Queensdale on the “Help farmer Diah” heart twice pre FPS cap, once after when you trigger one of the worms to pop up.
I’ve played hours upon hours without the crash outside of that zone.
I tried limiting the FPS to 60 and installed the recommended drivers which seemed to fix it at first, untill I made another character and went to do the “Help farmer Diah” heart again.
To be safe I’ve further limited the FPS to 30. No crashes since, though that was the same when I had the FPS capped at 60.
This does indicate a problem with the game rather than heating issues (GPU doesn’t go above 62 celcius), haven’t checked the CPU but I’ve got some serious cooling on it and it’s running stock speed.
My system is as follows:
2500K
8GB ram
Geforce GTX 570
Asus P8P67
XFX 600W PSU
I’ve had similar issues with Diablo 3 which were sorted by capping the FPS to 70 and turning off vsync. That’s also what I tried with GW2. I’ve not crashed in D3 since, but it has happened in GW2 (as described above).
As the area where the problem occurs is limited and it doesn’t happen in high load situations, with tons of players on screen blasting away, it does seem to be software related.
Spontaneous reboots (NOT BSODs w/auto-reboot) are 99.9% the power supply failing to deliver proper power under load.
The reason GW2 is doing this and not other games is because GW2 is more demanding (more stuff for your CPU, GPU, RAM, Chipset to do) and stresses the PSU more.

My computer was stress tested by the company I bought it from, it passed. I find it hard to believe that there are this many people having the same issue (this isn’t the only post, see google) and only with Guild Wars 2. Yet people are still pointing at their power supply? So their power supply breaks down only for Guild Wars 2, that makes no sense at all. My computer doesn’t seem “stressed” at all for this game, load times are fast, FPS is at a constant 60 with v-sync enabled, temps are low…. I find the issue occurs mostly in ‘The Mists’ zone for me. I’ve also tried the latest drivers / beta drivers too which did not fix it.
OK update. Capped the fps to 60. I ran realtemp and disabled the turbo for the cpu. Then ran the program with logging on realtemp to see the temperature at the time of crash.

120 core 0, 122 core 1, 120 core 2 and 124 core 3 and 142 was the gpu which is cool for a gpu considering that my old computer had geforce 8800 that got up to 180+. All temperatures are in fahrenheit. So nothing got hot enough to be the culprit. Someone said something about wow not being as stressing on the computer as guild wars. I’ve never played wow. Every game I have played other than this has never had problems like this. And LOTRO is a very demanding game on high settings as well as Star Wars Online. Especially since I’m using low settings on this game. The specs again are a G73SW asus gaming laptop made for 3d. With I7 pentium with 8 GB ram and a geforce 460M graphics with 1 gb onboard dedicated ram. So I honestly dont think its a thermal issue, but maybe it is. As far as the power pack, it is a 150 watt power brick and Ive had for over a year with no problems whatsoever no matter how long it was on and what load I had on it in a game. So the next thing I can try was that someone suggested I turn off autoreboot so I can see the error. But the event viewer is just telling me that basically the power turned off which can be because of the auto reboot on failure so gives no sure answer. But I do find it quite strange that only 1 game would cause a malfunction of a power pack when the others do not. So I’m at a loss.
Can you go to Control Panel →Administrative Tools → Event Viewer then under Windows system logs filter the logs to Error and Warning Look for the last reboot of the machine and what event ID did it says or information it says?
Are you running also other programs in the background? Aside from temp programs?

This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
Jappa yea I think it has something to do with graphics or the programming causing an bsod which windows 7 doesnt show I guess unless you turn autoreboot off. But any bsod will cause the event of loss of power..

Way off base here. The option to which I refer is Control Panel | Advanced system settings | Startup and recovery | Automatically reboot on error (uncheck this option). Your BIOS setting doesn’t verify your PSU’s health but I agree your Corsair 750W is enough (check the load on each rail though).
Barring hardware faults, the common theme seems to be a brand new video card (600 series) with a brand new game and both are having issues. Pinpointing software faults will require technical details and steps to reproduce the problem (not “all my other games work, GW2 doesn’t, I have ‘the latest’ drivers, please fix”), to include driver and various in-game settings.
I can see a 150W laptop PSU choking on GW2 (or any other demanding game); tolerances are tight as it is without attesting for build quality.
I’ve only had one lockup and that’s because I was testing GPU, VRAM overclocks on my 580, which brings me to another point: I haven’t found a video benchmark sufficient enough to stress test the video card (not even Uniengine Heaven). The only testbed I’ve found are games (currently Metro 2033 and GW2 with Prime95 and Intel Burn Test running in the background to test the entire system, not just the GPU on an idle system).
