Q:

Whenever I run guild wars 2 on my pc, even just the launcher for updates, my computer freezes. The only game or program that does this is guild wars 2. What happens, is my mouse will start slowing down, and then everything just halts. No error, no code, just complete freeze. Ctrl alt delete does nothing and the only option is a hard reset.

Here are my main specs
i5 2400, not over clocked
Gtx 460 with latest drivers, also tried with previous
8 gigs of kingston hyper x ram, ran mem test as a just in case and the ram is fine

I am having the same issue, pc completely freezes. No other choice than to hard restart. It happens, I would say, once every 2 or 3 hours… No error reports, just freezes.

System specs:
ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition Deneb 3.7GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (4 × 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
GTX 460 Graphics Card

All Drivers are up to date.
Only Freezes I have experienced with this build has been with Gw2.
Tried to revert back to previous drivers, problem persisted.
Tried to reinstall the game, problem persisted
I have run memory tests, all of which have come back fine.

I have done all of the same. I just ran prime 95 to stress my cpu and see if that might have been an issue, but it ran fine and passed. It seems like its some type of memory leak to me

I have been doing more testing and my launcher can’t get past 3% downloaded without crashing. I even tried the -repair tag. I am going to try and install via the cd but I think I am still going to freeze up. No other program does this to my pc.

For me, this is not a new issue… Been going on pretty much since release. Just freezes up like, every 2 – 3 hours. Again, only experienced this with Gw2. Don’t get me wrong, this does not make me hate the game. This game is fantastic, only wish I didn’t freeze up on me.

Quasar, i have a friend with a 460 that had that exact issue with Metro 2033. He has baked the card to reset the solder which fixed it for a bit, but the first gen Fermi cards are really poor silicon, compared to the 260’s of the past they don’t live long at all.

If you set -umbra gpu it will reduce the load of the gpu a bit in area’s full of particle effects, it might reduce the incidences of these crashes. by decreasing the amount of load on the card

since you have had lockups alot, and i know squall is going to say this is stupid, i would run a checkdisk, just incase you got some errors from the lockups.

start>run>cmd, in the cmd window type “chkdsk /f” without the " marks and then hit enter, then y then enter again, then restart, watch it and see if it finds any errors, this shouldnt take to long.

if you have multi hdd’s you shold do this for each drive, but only the boot drive needs a restart, to test other drives just add the drive letter for example “chkdsk /f d:” where d: is the drive letter.

good luck.

oh and I havent seen much silicon or heat related errors with the 460, the 470 and 480 tend to cook themselves tho…..never seen a 460 that did tho…..

Thanks for the input guys. Apparently I am not the only one with issues with the 460, seen a few other posts about it. However, for the other 460 posts, they were not having complete crashes, at least not that I can recall. They where more along the lines of low fps, cpu throttling, etc, none of which have been my problem. Everything maxed except for shadows which is on low, sit around 45 – 50 fps…

Now, I have run memory tests both to the hdd and ram all of which have come back fine… However I have not tried to adjust settings on the actual gpu, due to the lack of knowledge I have on doing something like that. It is probably what needs to be done next.

Question: If it were a problem with the hdd, ram, and or gpu, would I not have had similar issues with other games like Swtor, Rift, Sc2 or Wow? Everyone of those game I usually tend to max out, with the exception of shadows.

Anyways thanks for the help Squall and Jazhara. I will head into that direction “safely” when I do some research on it

Pull 2 sticks of your memory out make sure the 2 that are installed are in slot A or what your motherboard calls for when using only 2 sticks play the game if it freezes remove those sticks and install the other 2. Memtest really means nothing to me.
EDIT make sure your ram timings are set right in BIOS

said i hadnt seen it personally with the 460 never said it didnt happen, on the other hand, most people i knew after seeing fermi’s temps and power use went with AMD cards.

as to the OP, yes it could still be the card, Squall can likely tell you how to use nvinspector to change that since hes not a fan of afterburner or precision

the main issue with memtest is it dosnt really stress the memory that much(older memeory sure todays, not so much) it also dosnt stress the IMC much if at all….

A good test for memory and IMC is IntelBurnInTest (works on amd and intel), set it to max memory your system has free and do at least 5 runs, I have found it to be more reliable then memtest.

another is prime95 with custome values but those depend on the system and how much ram you have.

The final thing you can do to try fix this is to completly format your hardrives and re instal lwindows + up to date drivers + GW2 ..and then try.
If it works ..start installing your other programs and games 1 or 2 at a time and try GW2 again for a day.
Keep going and you will ether find somthing that clashes with GW2 ..or nothing ..and it was likely just a bug in your OS.

Sorry its been a few days since I have replied to this but I haven’t had time to run gw2. I did a full restore because after fixing my previous issue with the default cache problem. The freeze up was still happening so I decided to restore. After a restore the game fully updated and ran fine. However after closing out the game I left the launcher on in the background and my computer froze up.

After this I decided to edit my regsitry and switch my hd’s to ahci mode. They were on IDE so I am going to test and see if this will fix the issue.

I left my pc on with the launcher in the background while just doing simple tasks like using chrome or spotify, and froze up. Not really sure how to proceed since this is off a fresh os install.

sometimes explorer stops responding and needs restarted when launching/alt tabing gw2 for me, i have come to expect this, it dostn seem to happen if i run at native res but, in order to get some releif from the poor FOV i use downsampling to run the game at 2560×1440..

a definite hardware fault in some part of the computer.

We’re past the point of it being a simple file system error now, its either physical failure of the disk(s) or another component. Given its a freeze, Dram, CPU Cache or PCH/ICH are the points to test.

I get this problem also and its only with Guild Wars 2……no other game causes this, so it really isn’t a hardware issue.

The game might not like my hardware, but if ALL other games run perfectly, then its the games’ problem that needs fixing.

Same problem here, only happens in GW2, everything else runs like a boss and computer is always running cool, no overclocking. Someone in another thread suggested gw2 might be trying to write in protected memory and it borks up the OS. If that is in fact that case there is probably not much we can do other than wait for a fix.

I have been having this issue since Beta 2 reported it then(with my dxdiag).I also reported it when the game went live (with another dxdiag),like many others my pc just freeze on me.Sometimes alt-tab or alt-esc unlock it but most of the time I have to hard boot. It’s starting to get frustrating because this problem is known for months and unfortunately arenaNet doesn’t know what’s causing it.

I may have found a fix with anet’s help. I went through tech support and they had me disable all services and startup to see if the game would run without freeze, and it ran fine. S i re enabled everything but the nvidia 3d driver and the game is running fine. Let me know if this works for anyone else
