Horrible Client Download
Steam runs fine, capping out the speed on my ADSL connection.
Cmon ANet, someones gotta be able to see this. If youre attempting to sell more copies for the Xmas break, a crappy downloader is only gonna hurt.
This is ridiculous. Uninstalled everything, restart download process. The launcher downloads fine, caps out my connection, as soon as the launcher starts patching, speed drops to 0.00kbps and does NOTHING after that.
try using a different DNS beside the default ISP one like google’s dns or opendns

Im willing to try anything at this stage, can you give me a run through on how to do that?

Im sorry, I find it hard to believe that in order to download and patch GW2 I have to go through all that kitten. Thanks for the suggestion, but thats ridiculous.
Some kind of response from a Dev would be nice.
Large patch files isn’t handled by just one Anet server, its spread out through CDN and caches etc. Your ISP might have a local cache itself through their own DNS etc.

Convinced my fiance to give me her new Macbook and let me try installing it. Seemed to work just fine, patcher sat at my maxed connection speed, and downloaded more files in the first 10 minutes than Ive managed all day.
So…what the hell is wrong with my PC, and why arent it and the launcher getting along?
This is really frustrating
Just for fun I installed Windows 7 64bit SP1 fresh into a Virtualbox machine.
- Downloaded Gw2Setup.exe directly from guildwar2.com
- Started it. It downloaded gw2.exe to % USERPROFILE %\AppData\Local\Temp & auto ran with -Allowinstall command
- Prompted me where to install GW2
- Download speed went at max speed for me from akamai CDN servers.
- Have you tried clearing your temp files?
- Ran as admin?
- Disabled UAC?
- /flushdns command after changing to alternate dns server?
- Windows updated?
If all else fails and you are too lazy to reinstall a fresh copy of windows, you can make virtual machine and download gw2 and copy/move over the gw2.dat

Day 3, still completely unable to install/patch the game.
We buy a game to enjoy, not aggravations. When you tout for people to buy your digital edition, please make fooking sure that you are able to handle and provide solutions to the incompetencies of your SERVICE! Not everyone is comfortable in making changes to their computers. Why other provider who are NOT MMOs are able to provide decent d/l speeds for their digital games and you can’t? Does it make any sense?? Pff
Still borked. Same old same old, double click launcher, download anywhere from 10-40meg, speed dribbles to 0.00 and then does nothing.
Anyway, Merry Christmas all!
Yea this is the same for me iswell =/
Almost 6 days, no change. Some kind of dev response would be nice.
A quick review:
Brand new PC.
Patching starts and stops within 10-15 seconds.
No firewall/anti-virus running.
Always run as Admin.
Steam works fine, games download without issue.
Heres the info on my PC using the link I saw provided elsewhere:
Attachments:
Heya folks.
Day 7.
Still unable to get more than 10-15 seconds of continual patching done before the patcher drops and stays at 0.00kbps.
I have, to date, tried the following things:
Removing all other PCs/users from the network (never had to do this before)
Forwarded all ports to recommended (never had to do this before)
Deleted and restarted the install/patch process numerous times (never had to do this before)
Turned off all firewalls, including my modem (Ive never messed with my modem before and it doesnt feel right having to do it now)
Removed all virus scanning and anti virus programs (Never used them before)
Installed all drivers for windows and cards (Hasnt changed anything)
Always run the Patcher as Admin (makes no difference)
Have disabled UAC (as above)
A couple other things to note:
Steam works fine, have downloaded half a dozen games so far (Xmas sale!)
Have downloaded and patched LOTRO just fine.
Have downloaded and patched Rift just fine.
Ive moved past frustration now, and Im into the early stages of bemused confusion.

Just bought the game a couple of days ago.
And yes, having problem with downloading the game itself as well(the infamous 1/3/5 file(s) remaining).
I do not understand, it would be really simple for ArenaNet to put up the game file itself(.dat or all of them, update them as patches come) on some ftp server as a standalone download without the use of the client. Problem solved.

I’m seeing a pretty big increase in all sorts of problems in regards to the patching process over the last week.
Any sort of official response would be great.
Cheers @ kirito for all his/her help and suggestions.

Thanks for the pointers. However, I pretty much googled all the possible solutions there are out there in regards to this issue. And tried most of them. I just have not submitted a ticket for my problem yet.
And it is quite ridiculous for the user-end to have to do so much just trying to get the game itself(not even to play it, but to get it). You would think ArenaNet would want their game to be hassle-free(or nearly so). A simple standalone download for the game files is the most straight forward solution.

I couldn’t agree more.
I’m pretty much gonna let the next few days slide and hope for an answer, or some form or resolution in the new year.
When you tried DLing with the Macbook, was that on the same network/internet connection as your windows desktop? If so, something could be fishy within windows.

Yeah mate, it was…so I’m starting to wonder now….
- Aside from hunting down whats wrong with windows, you could just do a clean re-install.
- I did notice in your log how few directx files you have listed. Tried update/repair installation of directx? [link]

Hmm…pretty sure I have direct x 11? Will double check when I get home. I assumed it was installed for Borderlands 2…
Was considering the install of Windows. Will need to look into what I should do first.
The google DNS trick that Kirito said is a good one to use. I also see an increased download speed too when I do that for larger patches
Also, disabling firewalls, security software..
Making sure its in a folder NOT in Programs
Make sure administrator privileges
GW2 doesn’t use DX11, and borderland 2 might have installed different types of DX files.

Fresh windows install + driver update + windows update + directx update and you should be set.

Tried a couple more things today:
Installed GW2 to a folder not in /Programs. No joy.
Installed DirectX. No joy.
I really don’t want to have to mess with my DNS settings or reinstall Windows, sigh.
Well, it’s been two weeks and I still cannot reinstall on my new PC. I’m done.
If a Dev reads this and has any suggestions apart from those things I listed, great, if not, well I’m boned.
Disappointing.
Azureal, don’t rely on the forums for support issues. It’s usually a good place to start because you can often get a quick resolution here, but not always. If you haven’t done it, open a support ticket and make sure you make your problem THEIR problem. Just posting your issue is basically asking support to ignore you.
By the way, this same issue has been happening since prior to launch. I know. I experienced it then and I still see it now. Luckily for me though, after manually restarting the patcher a dozen or so times, it eventually kicks in and stays connected. It’s still irritating to have to sit and watch the patcher for 30 minutes to make sure it continues working.
Hope you get your issue addressed. Just make sure you force support to look at your problem by opening a ticket.
Technical Support
Hi Azureal -
I’m curious about your system’s network configuration and I think this may be either the issue if not contributing to the issue that you’re experiencing. I think the best approach here would be for you to create a support ticket for us to better assist you, although I would like for you to try a command to see if this makes a difference for you at all.
To do this:
1. Navigate to your Guild Wars 2 installation folder.
2. Right-click on “GW2.exe” and select “Create Shortcut.”
3. Rename this shortcut to “Guild Wars 2 Port Test.”
4. Right-click on this shortcut and select “Properties.”
5. Edit the “Target” line to include /clientport 80 at the end.
Note: Please make sure /clientport 80 is outside of the quotes
Correctly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” /clientport 80
Incorrectly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe /clientport 80”
6. Once completed, click “Ok” to save your changes.
If you get an error trying to save, your target line may not have the correct format. Please try step 5 again.
7. Double click “Guild Wars 2 Port Test” and try connecting again.

Just wanted to say thanks. I downloaded half of the game at 200-300 kBps. I got rather annoyed but after finding this it started downloading at 1.1MBps. I am quite suprised this actually worked due to the fact that my computer has all the ports forwarded to it with no firewalls except for me checking the used ports and services using the internet. Nevertheless thankee.
Just wanted to add, i was getting constant 30Kb download. Swapping my DNS over to 8.8.8.8 (google) worked WONDERS. I am now downloading at my normal 3.1MB/sec
