Hello Guild War 2 Friends
My CPU and GPU are both running stock ( not overclocked ).
I want to try Nvidia 3D Vision at 1920 × 1080 with the above mentioned setup. I am looking for good enough FPS to give me fluid movement.
What do you think ? Should I be able to achieve that ?

simple answer
Turn down all cpu intensive settings such as shadows, LOD, and reflections
Overclock your cpu,
Your gpu is kinda overkill

Thanks for the response loseridoit.
I think I am going to go ahead and purchase a 3d monitor this week and give it a shot.
All the reviews I have read of 3d in this game seem quite good.
Why not purchase a quality 27" 2560×1440 panel be it IPS or PLS? If you play GW2 and other MMOs you won’t need more than 60Hz/60FPS anyway.
Examples are Yamakasi Catleap, Achieva Shimian, Crossover 27Q, or a PLS such as the QNIX QX2710. The PLS panel offering near same image quality as an IPS along with viewing angles, but the ability to be overclocked on the stock PCB such as the older Catleap 2B panels that go for $1,000 to this day.
3D seems to be dying down as of late, and 1920×1080 is slowly dwindling with 2560×1440 being the current “norm” or “mainstream” panels after they took the market by storm with the Korean panels such as the Yamakasi, etc a few years ago.

Hi Sobe
Yes, that is tempting, but I have used 3D before and I reeeeally liked it. It adds a whole new level of immersion when done properly.
I have an Ipad 3 and I surely appreciate the increased pixel density, it looks wonderful, but 3D seems to be more compelling for me right now
Thanks though, I appreciate your input and the fact that you took the time to post

If you haven’t bought anything yet, I have one suggestion you might want to take into consideration:
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/g-sync
G-SYNC monitors are coming slowly this year so if you’re not in a hurry and you can wait a few months I would definitely take a look at those. G-SYNC looks so good on paper that in a few years we will be laughing at monitors without it (or similar technology).
If you don’t want to read thru all the pages in that link, heres a brief overview: what it basically does is it turns your GPU into master and monitor into slave, just the opposite of how it’s been before, by adapting the screen refresh rate (Hz) to the rate your GPU can render frames. It eliminates tearing, stuttering and input delay brought by Vsync and normal refresh rate. If I hadn’t bought a monitor just a little while ago I’d be definitely looking for a chance to get one (and surely am later on).

Hello locx
I bought the monitor about 2 minutes before I saw your post, : O , no joke. Oh well the money was burning a hole in my pocket anyway, hehe.
I had heard a little about G-Sync from a relative, it sounds very promising. I will definitely keep my eyes open for that technology in the future. It will be interesting to see if their are any caveats when it is first released.
Which panel did you pick up?

I’m super happy with my Asus VG248QE. It might not be 27" or 2560×1440.
But It is 1ms response time, and 144 Mhz with the option to upgrade to 3D, built in cross hair overlays, and one of the few monitors than can light boost.
Besides, if your gonna go with 2560×1440 you should be looking a 3-4 gb GTX 680 (not a 2gb)

Well that’s a shame
No worries tho, enjoy that monitor you got, if we start seeing G-SYNC monitors in like a month you can always resell this monitor you’ve just bought (shouldn’t be too big of a drop in price if it’s only 1 month old) or hook ’em both up as a dual monitor setup
Which one did you get, anyway?
If he got the VG248QE he won’t need to resell Buy the G-Sync kit, unscrew backing from monitor, pop it off, disconnect monitor speakers and hook up G-Sync module, then put the backing back on the panel. Voila, G-Sync monitor.

wish i could get an release date on those upgrade kits.
when you get your 3d Rig setup, let us know what settings you have to run for whatever FPS you are after.

Thanks for the feedback everyone
@ sobe
I bought the Asus VG278H, should be here tomorrow. I got it for $ 380. It comes with the Nvidia glasses and the built in emitter. The one I purchased is used but it has been tested, has a 30 day refund/90 day warranty, and is from a major retailer. The more recent release is the Asus VG278HE which does not include the emitter or the glasses and costs about the same new.
@ locx
I think its gonna be ok. Most of the problems that the G-Sync monitor would have addressed are not major concerns with my current setup. Thanks for your concern though.
@ NeedCoffee
Lets hear it For Light Boost ! My monitor will have that also I am glad you are enjoying yours, I have read many positive reviews of the one I ended up buying also.
@ sobe again
Do you know if the Asus VG278H will accept the G-Sync kit ?
@ sirsquishy
You bet Squish, if I forget feel free to remind me
Once I get the Rig setup I plan to post back to this thread and share my overall experience with you guys.
I really couldn’t tell you, the VG248QE is the only publicly known CURRENT panel that is on the market to accept G-Sync. ASUS recently unveiled a 27" 2560×1440p panel that is 120Hz and uses the G-Sync module, but they have not stated if it’s TN, IPS, or PLS, that looks promising.

ooh a 120hz 1440p monitor with G-Sync ..that’s ..impressive. That would be tempting for me if it weren’t for its small size. (remembering im using a 42" atm). looking forward to Asus 39" 4k Monitor ..hopefully with G-Sync.
OP do remember that GW2 has known performance issues in busy areas, so don’t be surprised by poor performance, though you should already have experienced that.
3D vision pretty much doubles the required GPU grunt, so if ur running GW2 ok now around the 50% or less GPU usage mark, 3D vision should show no FPS reduction from that standpoint.
I missed it, ASUS made an announcement in an interview it is indeed a TN panel, though they claim it to be a high quality TN compared to the normal TN’s on the market. The pricing sits at $800 though, lol.
I’ll be awaiting the 30" 4k displays, 39 would be too big to have sitting directly in front of me. 27" is more than enough as it is, lol.

Aye, I would not get a screen bigger than say.. Asus’s 31.5" screen if ur at a desk for example. However if ur setup is similar to a front room TV experience, then its fine to go BIG
$800 for TN is to much imo.
VA, fine.
IPS even better
PLS better still
BUT… IPS and PLS are no good for gaming imo, to much blurring/ghosting. Even some VA panels can suffer from ghosting, which I cant stand, im just hoping that the VA panel Asus use on the 39" 4k screen is fast.

I hang out at the asus forums alot, i heard about 2-3 new monitors coming out with g-sync.
the funny thing is, the way i understood it was the g-sync tech was holding the monitor’s potential back.
I also learned you can not use g-sync in windowed mode. full screen mode only. (or at least that’s what the poisonous posters over at Nvidia said)

Well, I put the 3D system together last night. It went smooth and was not difficult.
Today was tweaking day.
I hadn’t done any 3D in quite awhile, but I remembered it’s important to adjust convergence and depth if you want to optimize 3D performance.
The most important tweak was the convergence adjustment. Once I had that set I was able to adjust depth and convergence in tandem and maximize the 3D performance.
Once I finished…….frankly……..I was BLOWN AWAY, it looks REALLY good.
I has heard it was good but I had no idea it was that nice, wow. I can see now why their are people that rave about it.
I also need to mention that prior to tweaking the default ( out of box ) 3D settings I was not nearly as impressed. The depth default setting is 15 % ( which is nothing ) and the convergence setting is some sort of one size fits all ( or none ) that doesn’t begin to take advantage of what this system can do.
So, wow, If you try this, make sure you spend some time with your settings before you pass judgement.
Anyway, that’s my report Gents.
Oh ! Squishy….the setting that benefited my FPS performance the most was reducing supersampling ( which I normally use in 2D ) down to native sampling, I gained 20 FPS.
I have shadows on low, reflections on terrain and sky and LOD on medium. My other settings are a mixture of high and normal ( mostly high ), tweaking them up and down made little difference in FPS performance.
My average FPS was about 55 to 60 in the country side and 45 in the city. I definitely had significant stuttering in the city but I don’t spend much of my time there, so I wasn’t too concerned. I like to wander abroad and explore alot.
Hope that was helpful everyone
